Both of you are right. I loved when he said that the tip to the bellboy should have been tremendous if it causes such a powerful response from the soundtrack.

Well, it's ahead of Casino Royale '67. That's something I guess.

James Bond will return in The Spy Who Loved Me...
1. Theme Song – 10 (another big shot with Carly Simon. Nice ballad that comes with three covers: the smooth "Anya", the stringy version about the end and the funny male chorus version).
2. Use of Bond Theme- 9 ("Bond '77" was a great update of the theme to the disco era, managing to be both fun and dramatic. Too bad the version from the film didn't make it to the sountrack).
3. Style – 8 (Hamlisch created a sometimes strange but welcome amalgam of disco, pop and 40s-50s adventure movie-like sounds. It works perfectly for the film).
4. Romance – 10 (coming from the man who brought us "The Way We Were", it's no wonder it's romantic, using masterfully composed contemporary sounds, with jazz-pop guitar solos apparently by Lawrence Juber, who would join Paul McCartney & Wings the year after).
5. Excitement - 8 (not as exciting as other Bond soundtrack releases, the movie arrangements show Hamlisch did a better work than it looks by simply listening to the album)
6. Brass – 8 (not the brassiest score you'll ever listen to, but it has its moments, especially the sax solos)
7. Suspense – 6 (it has a couple of moments of suspense, actually, but not much. It's a pure action soundtrack).
8. Iconography – 9 (the memorable song and Bond '77 are two symbols of the time)
9. Epicness – 8 (it does not look epic at first, but the Tanker and the Atlantis themes have good moments, full of dramatics)
10. Timelessness – 7 (as much as I love it, it's a dated soundtrack in many moments. "Anya" and the couple of symphonic pieces would sound quite contemporary, though).
84/100 %: The late-70s at their best with some Bond goodness and the brand of one of the most popular film composers of the era in Hollywood.

This soundtrack definitely needs an expanded edition. I decided not to include the classical pieces (the ones not written by Hamlisch) although I do love their use in the film. So, it's dated (in a good way), but not everything here is disco. It doesn't get much more romantic than the NDIB instrumental. I love the eeriness of Ride To Atlantis and The Pyramids. The music when the truck breaks down is a little jarring. Is that original music from Hamlisch? Otherwise, it's a very enjoyable listen all around. Bond 77 baby!

What a lush and elegant sounding score. Barry really went symphonic on us this time around. Some of that, no doubt, was influenced by Star Wars. However, Barry had already scored space scenes in previous films and this was a further extension and evolution of that sound. Some of these melodies are just gorgeous and downright awe-inspiring. They certainly helped to elevate their accompanying scenes in the film.
If I remember correctly, the theme song was kind of a last minute affair. So, as a minor nitpick, perhaps that's why it wasn't implemented as much as it could have been. The disco version played during the end credits made me subtract a point from the Timelessness category. Also, I was never a big fan of this particular rendition of "007" played during the Rio boat chase. I just don't think it fits the scene and I never equated the song with Moore anyway.

1. Theme Song – 8 (a nice lounge-like tune which was thought for Frank Sinatra or Johnny Mathis, it ended up in the capable hands of Shirley Bassey. A nice disco reprise for the end credits puts the song in its own time. I love the brief [supposedly] brazilian-sounding version).
2. Use of Bond Theme- 9 (the Bond theme does not sound often here. In exchange we have a nice cover of the 007 theme)
3. Style – 10 (solemn symphonic soundtrack , but Barry does not forget the fun factor with the disco reprise of the main theme).
4. Romance – 10 (from the song to the last theme, all the sountrack sounds romantic one way or another)
5. Excitement - 10 (you'll have a kick out the adventurous themes)
6. Brass – 8 (a full-fledged orchestra always has a powerful brass section, but here it's the strings what dominate)
7. Suspense – 9 (Barry regained his crown as the most suspenseful composer of all the Bond saga).
8. Iconography – 9 (it was used a lot on Turkish, HK and documentary films of the era that needed some epic, along with John William's marches).
9. Epicness – 10 (the most epic of the Bond scores: Barry went totally John Williams with a full orchestra and choirs
10. Timelessness – 10 (generally speaking, symphonic scores are always timeless. In fact, the only thing that gives out the era where this was made is the ending song).
93/100 %: Granted, it's not the most funny score to listen to, nor one of my top favorites but it's lush, romantic, timeless and wonderful overall. High marks for this one.
