2. Use of Bond Theme – 0 (of course)
3. Style – 2 (so, nice, they wanted to use classic jazz mixed with a bit of hodgepodge I'm not bothering to detail. Let me say only that it's an EPIC FAIL in so many levels)
4. Romance – 5 (well, I guess we can say it's almost average in this)
5. Excitement – 0 (nope, not an exciting song in all the score)
6. Brass – 8 (brassy, it is)
7. Suspense – 1 (if we call that noisy music for Spectre and its awful strings "suspense"... In Spanish, the joke would be easy, as the derived word "suspenso" can mean "fail on a test").
8. Iconography – 0 (not a chance)
9. Epicness – 0 (even less of a chance in a score devoid of any action)
10. Timelessness - 0 (wasn't even appropiate for 1983)
25/100: As much as I like NSNA even for several of its flaws, this is an unforgivable disaster. Only the two songs contain anything good to say about that.
Seriously, when I read the producers wanted James Horner and then I hear DIS was Connery's choice... Not only un-bondian, but awful. Seriously, I always thought Legrand is overrated both as a score composer AND as a jazzman: I'd rather pick Claude Bolling any time.

It's the only Bond film I ever saw in a drive-in, and the circumstances were bizarre. My mother's boyfriend at the time came over, and while she was out running errands after work, he said "Let's go to the movies." I figured this was all good and swell. We got some KFC and saw the movie. I remember that Porky's 2 was playing on the screen next to us, so I kept looking over at that, because there was a lot of T&A on that screen.
Turns out, the boyfriend had technically kidnapped me. When we got home, the police were there. He was arrested! True story!
I can't hear the NSNA title song without tasting the KFC!
Sorry: a bit off track, but I had to share.

This one provided the template for Barry's 80's output. You can definitely hear how parts of AVTAK and TLD developed from this score. The use of the Bond theme was more prominent due to the competition of NSNA. He really wanted to make a point that this was the authentic James Bond.
The theme song is okay, I suppose, but it doesn't feel very Bond-like. It does give off a cheesy, "soft rock" vibe. I suppose with Barry and Moore getting older this was appropriate. Interesting how they decided to inject the youthful energy of Duran Duran next time around, but we'll discuss that later.
Overall, it's another pleasing effort from Barry. Suspenseful, exciting, elegant etc... Many would be lucky to come up with something this good but for Barry it's not quite at the same level as his best work. He just set the bar so incredibly high during his 60's peak. That was his true "all time high." Sorry, I couldn't resist.

How can people not give this score a 10/10 for romance and suspense. I think this film has the most romantic and most suspensefull score of all Bond films. The adaptation of "all time high" in the film is just amazingly beautifull.
Shouldn't we rate the adaptation of the theme song here? I don't think the song is very great but its adaptation in the film is among the best in the whole franchise.

1. Theme Song – 8 (not bad, but not memorable. Miss Coolidge was one of the great female voices of the era and shows: she croons well. However, as an instrumental love theme, works much better).
2. Use of Bond Theme – 6. (I don't remember hearing it very often, but Vijay using it as passcode is a comical treasure).
3. Style – 8 (Following MR's sountrack conventions, Barry does an orchestral score: not as epic as MR's, but much more down-to-earth and average listener-friendly).
4. Romance – 9 (as stated before, the main theme is a wonderful love theme)
5. Excitement - 8 (your typical adventure movie score, but by john Barry. Guaranteed)
6. Brass – 7 (as brassy as orchestral scores go)
7. Suspense – 9 (again, it's Barry and "suspense" goes with him: the music where Octopussy thinks Bond has died eaten by crocs is a good proof)
8. Iconography – 7 (not that memorable despite being a notable score)
9. Epicness – 9 (just a bit less epic than MR's, shows it has moments of grandeur)
10. Timelessness – 10 (as I always says, an orchestral score very rarely gets old)
Overall: 77%: Don't let the lower position fool you. OP score seems to grow on me: at first I thought it was derivative and forgettable despite its good execution and sounded like a demo for the mesmerizing Out Of Africa score. However, I learned to value its merits over time).
