does crumble mean the skyfall lodge , crumbling away ?? just a thought.

Yeah, her saying "At Skyfall" makes it pretty apparent that she is aware of what Skyfall actually is.

OK I'm ready to dodge a bullet for asking this question lol What exactly is Skyfall?
And can someone briefly explain what I need to know about the storyline to have a better understanding of her lyrics.
First of all it refers to James Bond's ancestral lodge/castle. Its name is 'Skyfall', previously owned. Moreover, and I am surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but there's a big reference to Ian Fleming's novel 'You Only Live Twice', never been used before in a Bond film: We see the grave of Bond's parents Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, where Skyfall Lodge is located, and Monique Delacroix Bond, of the Swiss canton Vaud. Bond's parents died at age 11, leaving him an orphan, shortly mentioned by Vesper in 'Casino Royale'

Secondly, 'Skyfall' refers to a specific name for a big villainous revenge operation initiated by villain Raoul Silva, ex-MI6-agent. He knows about Bond's past and first wants to create havoc on MI6, committing a terrorist attack on Vauxhall Cross, killing members of parliament and several MI6-employees. But that's not it. His revenge goes beyond that. Silva is a computer wizkid too. With his IT knowledge he wants to bring down all defense satellites. Hence the big computer racks/servers on Silva's deserted island. So very cynically Silva wants to 'let the sky fall'; let the secret intelligence community crumble. So he's a villainous version of Julian Assange.

    Where did the part
about it being the name of Silva's operation come from? I haven't heard if it?

It's guesswork. This has never even been rumoured before.

skyfall is bonds ancestral home and it seems bond and 'M' (his boss) will go on some sort of journey together and have to 'stand tall' in the face of danger lol maybe other members can tell it better than me I'm not good with words but that's a little gist of things :)

    Thanks :)

Well not technically shot in Macau, but the sets in Pinewood doubled for it. Very ironic though.

Sounds like the first proper Bond theme since TWINE or even GE.

    What's wrong with YKMN?

Nothing. It's underrated in the Bond canon.

Just incase it hasn't been reported. Skyfall by Adele is the number 1 single on itunes right now. BTW love the song it really has the classy bond theme feel in it great job to Adele. Cant wait for the music video if there is one.

Update: After a few more listenings I've creeped it up ahead of TND. So it's now solidly taken it's place with the other top-20 Bond themes. Although it will probably take many additional listenings to overtake any more of the distinguished offerings that have preceeded it. But the good news is that the new theme has passed mustard and can be lumped in with the worthy Bond themes, which includes everything but the abominable duo of DAD and AWTD. Shudder. :-O

I think people have the tendency to rate newer things higher than they should be - just because they are more well known.

But with Adele's Skyfall I can honestly say it's in my top 5. Not more, not less. With LALD, YOLT, GE, We Have All The Time In The World (whats the abbreviation for that one??).

AWTD is rock bottom (if only they had Keys let it sing on her own!!), then DAD I guess (if only they had gotten ANYBODY ELSE...)

That's not true. I rated Die Another Day at the very bottom from the beginning.

I don´t say anything against your opinion, and since you rank the TWINE song so high you make sense liking this song, but I honestly don´t hear any connection to a Bassey /Tom Jones era. Those were massive voices, while here the singer sounds as if she had a cold. Which is a shame, considering that´s the woman who set fire to the rain.

so, simply because i enjoy TWINE more than say "Goldfinger" means my opinion shouldn't be taken seriously?.. is that what you are alluding to with the comment of "..and since you rank the TWINE song so high you make sense liking this song." - is that a question about my musical taste, and that since i prefer a song that is soo universally panned by Bond fans, that I don't know what a good theme sounds like, and therefor my opinion on said matter is null and void?..... not trying to sound like a p**** or anything - but i just want to get a better understanding of that statement..
    ???
Sorry, I thought my sentence ´I don´t say anything against your opinion´ was self-explanatory. I meant that at face value, no sarcasm intended. I just felt compelled to throw out into the field my opposing opinion - opinion regarding the song and the song only, not your understanding or evaluation. Since this SF song reminds me strongly of the TWINE song, it makes sense to me that if you like one you also like the other. Again, no criticism or sarcasm intended. Sorry if I didn´t make myself clear before, I hope I do now.

  • It doesn't remind me of TWINE because I prefer TWINE.

I think TWINE is the best of the Brosnan songs and one of the best in the series.

just listened to skyfall, have to say it starts off reasonably well, though at this point not keen on chorus. i personally reserve judgement until i hear the music accompanied by the title sequence, that will determined whether it fits or does not fit for me.

p.s. it unmistakably sounds like a adele pop song, it will chart very high, probably go to number one.
  • I'm surprised how well this song is selling, with the repetitive chorus. I love the orchestral accompaniment, the throwbacks to the good ol' days, and for the most part Adele's voice.

This track is certainly way better than I'd expected, but even so it's still not perfect. As others have mentioned, it is rather repetitive. It is rather repetitive. It is rather repetitive.

But I suppose that's to be expected with pop-music, unfortunately.

  • The best song and it's good. I like Adele's song, but the problem was when is the Music Video be released? We'll wait.

I have a gut feeling that the audience kinda like this kind of repetitive chorus. In my opinion, on many occasions that's the formula for success. It's not that complicated song, so it gets stuck in your brains completely.

Hearing the reacions on the internet makes me also think that the audience were actually missing this Bond-ian feeling. And that's back with a bang, capital B. Bond once said in 'Tomorrow Never Dies': "[to Carver] You forgot the most important rule of mass media Elliotttt. Give the people what they want!"
  • You Know My Name had a Bondanian feeling.

Like I said earlier, if it was terrible it'd sell well because Adele is singing it.
  • It has sense of being the end song rather than a prelude to the main event. Maybe an instrumental piece after all at the beginning? Any way the song makes we want trifle.

Well, I haven't contributed to it being number one on i tunes. I am going to wait until the entire SF album is out and depending on whether I like it or not, will determine whether I'll actually buy it obviously. Ofcourse this depends on whether SF will actually be on the album. If I don't like the album then I might download the single, presuming I still like it at this point.

Just a quick reminder of the more slower (slow-tempo) Bond songs and its main titles:

    And now off course:

Just to let you know guys. Bond songs are not only rock songs. Bond songs are not only fast tempo, synthesizers and sneering guitars. Bond songs are not only Madonna and Alicia Keys who still need to learn singing.

Bond songs can be slow, jazzy, soulfull and romantic too. Perhaps not the taste of many youngsters in here, but they are part of the Bond music history. And I know sometimes they are not always liked, but these songs are given the opportunity to let them grow on people as well. When in cinema you can wind down from a busy day and actually relax for a bit, while at the same time being awed by all these beautifully conducted orchestra's.

That's why Adele is my friend :-). That's why I am looking much forward to this movie than to the previous film 'Quantum Of Solace'.
  • ^^^Nobody on the thread ever said Bond songs were just rock songs. A few people, me included, said they liked the rock themes better, but nobody ever said that.

I know I know. And maybe I was implying it a bit, I also never said that the slower songs are better. I just am happy to see so much diversity in Bond songs. And this time around it's time for a slower, more orchestral approach :-). A true Bond-ballad with a recognizable melody so to say.

Yeah. Real low. But maybe he's too damn perfect himself. That's what I'm thinking right now...

Anyway... I've listened the full song now about 5 to 6 times, and I can say this is one of the best. This, YKMN and Goldeneneye are the best songs that the "modern" Bond films have to offer. Three times out of seven is not that bad of a record.

They're describing SF as "epic" on the radio. Right, back to watching the last half of Dr No.

I know in other films bond songs have been interpreted as 'about the villain' 'about Bond' etc. However I feel we have a real treat here for the reasons below:
The has already been supposition around M being revealed as Bonds Mother and whilst I don't wholly buy that I do feel that the song is almost Bond and M's song and what they mutually are committed to and they know is on the line.

In CR 'M' says "when I knew you were you"

In Skyfall the lyric is (paraphrased)
"I know i'll never be me, without the security, of your loving arms, keeping me from harm, put your hand in my hand (Bond rescues M and they go in the Aston to Scotland)... and we will stand tall... face it all together at skyfall" - mutual respect and 'love'. As has already been mooted too the film might see M's demise so you can forgive the emotive elements here and I do not suggest these as anything more than dramtic sentiments as opposed to anything else (if you know what I mean).

There is something dangerously final about the lyric and real forboding and desperation in what is about to come..it make me really very excited, played loud this song is just sensational (loads of nuianced brass in there too) love it.

My only concern is the lyric "I've drowned and dreamt this moment" please dont let Bond seemingly drown in the river only for the rest of the film to be a flashback/dream sequence! eek.

    What do you think?
