I see we've never had one of these here on MI6 Community so I thought that I would start a thread for the discussion of true crime in the UK, the US and around the world. It can encompass any crime from any era, the details, how the criminal was caught, if the criminal was caught etc.

We can discuss anything from Jack the Ripper to Oscar Pistorious and from Fred West to Dr Harold Shipman.

Here is the place for True Crime discussions and analysis.

I'm particularly interested in how True Crime has influenced the James Bond novels and films over the years if this is of interest to anyone else?

So what will we discuss to get the ball rolling?

How about the recent Oscar Pistorious Trial and the changing of the lesser culpable homicide conviction to that of murder for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp whom he shot through a locked bathroom door in his house on 14 February 2013?

What are our thoughts on that case? I have to say they have finally delivered the correct decision as the culpable homicide sentence was far too lenient for what was a reckless disregard for life when Pistorious fired through that bathroom door at his girlfriend on that fateful night.

Who did he say he thought was behind the door? Also, looks like I'll follow this thread closely. I love reading about murderers and such. What a wonderful idea.

I've seen your computer at Curry's. Some grim stuff on there. I thought you'd have had the sense to destroy the hard-drive. :D

A burglar/intruder apparently. If you believe that etc...

I watched the first Krays film, with those terrible pop stars, this is probably better.

Yes, and interestingly this new Krays film is based on the book by none other than Fleming and Bond biographer John Pearson. :)

Has anybody been on Netflix and watched "Making a Murderer"? What are your thoughts on Steven A. Avery?

I watched the entire thing in a day or two after it premiered; mentioned it elsewhere in hopes of sparking up a discussion, but no luck.

Personally, I think he's innocent. Yourself?

I think that he's most definitely innocent. I think that whole thing is messed up honestly. Defense lawyers Dean Strang and Jerry Buting had an airtight case, I thought. Especially with the lack of blood anywhere in Avery's trailer. And why would Teresa Halbach's blood be found in the back of her RAV4 if she had just been dragged out from the garage? You don't kill someone and then load her into the back of her car just to drive her body five feet, dump it out, and burn it. Although, I'm sure the series left out some information, it'd be hard for me to read the stuff that was left out and do a switcheroo and proclaim that he's guilty. I don't believe that there is solid concrete proof that Avery is definitely guilty. As for the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department, I fully believe that Lieutenant James Lenk planted the key in Steven's bedroom. It seemed to me that whenever they were asked a tough question it was always, very conveniently, "I don't recall" or "I don't know."

As for Brendan Dassey, that whole thing was stupid as well. I do not believe that they should have convicted him. Obviously, the kid did have some cognitive issues, which is what makes it all the more heartbreaking. He should not have stood trial. If you listen to the phone calls, he has no clue what he's saying or doing. He changes his story like eight or ten times.

That's exactly what I said about the blood in the back of the RAV4: would only be there if she was transported from a location much further away, which she wasn't.

You're right, Dassey had no idea what he was doing. So sad that he now has to spend the rest of his life in jail because of that reason.

It's kind of scary to think that things like this actually do happen.

Thank you very much for bringing it to my attention, @DaltonCraig007, and for reviving this rather forgotten thread of mine!

You're right in surmising that this documentary series would be of interest to me. Some years ago I conducted a little research into the New York Mafia for a Bond article I've yet to complete.

Unfortunately I don't subscribe to Netflix but if this series ever becomes available to buy on DVD or whatever I'd be very interested in purchasing it. :)
