Being an Italophile I can't resist following this year's edition of the world's oldest annual tv music competition: the Sanremo festival.

In contrast to the Eurovision song contest which is inspired by it, this one is still performed by singers who can actually sing well live, kitsch is kept to a minimum and it still uses a live orchestra.

I could list quite a few favourites from this year, but I'll just share my favourite slower song and my favourite more energetic entry.

For some rhythm and dancing I can't get enough of this one by The Kolors:

On the more ballady side, Giorgia once was hailed by Elton John as one of the best singing voices in the world and she proves once more that Elton was right:

I just checked out the "Möbelscheune" (Furniture Barn) in our next bigger town. It is run by the Landkreis (county, district or whatever you would call it) and mostly sells used furniture that was donated rather than discarded, and quite cheaply. But they also have stuff liked used TVs or even old electric typewriters, all checked for function. And I also found a shelf with CDs and couldn't resist buying the following at 50 cents each:

One is The Best of Santana from 1998, is over 75 minutes long, and I found I know almost every song on it but so far only owned those are from the Abraxas album. Then there is Eric Serra's soundtrack from The Fifth Element. I saw the movie quite a few years ago, but so far don't connect anything with the score and haven't listened to the CD yet. But the real curio is the album by Nina & Frederik. I remember them from my earliest TV-watching days as a friendly Danish-Dutch couple with nice voices and a guitar, and Nina went on to sing Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown for OHMSS. This album is nothing special, really, except for Louis Armstrong joining them in the song Formula For Love. The rest are mostly Harry Belafonte cover songs. But I had never stumbled across a Nina & Frederik album, and especially not for 50 cents.

@j_w_pepper Interesting, personally as an Éric Serra fan, I love the score to The Fifth Element!

In other news, Duran Duran made a 12-minute guest appearance at Sanremo, where they performed together with Victoria De Angelis. No AVTAK unfortunately, but still a good time with Simon & Co.

Yesterday it was cover & duet night at Sanremo, and Giorgia and Annalisa, two excellent singers, brought a Skyfall cover together. And they won. I can't find any footage of the full performance (except on the RAI app), but I love it when two passions unexpectedly come together. So I thought why not share my enthusiasm here ;)

Edit: it was posted on YT two days later.

Excellent interpretation if you ask me. But then again, I'm both a Giorgia and an Annalisa fan, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that I absolutely love this.
