Since Dalton seems like a very small problem has happened to each Bobd actor and that little problem is: they start with a film which wasn't fully written for them and affects thier debut just a bitt.
The Living Daylights still had a bitt of the Moore's jokes which made Dalton a bitt uncomfortable, hecwas still great and the living daylights is a very good movie and Dalton was very goid but has the black spot that its not a film tailored for him and now affects me a little when i see because i can pointout in which moments would have been better.
Goldeneye great Debut for Pierce but again was a film furst written fir Dalton and you are too picky you the flaws or black spots. Pierce nailed most of the part but the pre tittles sequence looked more like something written for Dalton and so is the scene where he meets Alec in the cemetery.
He wasn't horrible in those scenes its just that its a film which feels there were moments that you know its not a film perfectly tailored for Pierce.
Casino Royale was a great start for Craig and proved his detractors they were wrong about him however there are a few moments where I felt Pierce would have been better here like
The train scene where he meets vesper, The shower scene after the fight and the little finger pick up line those are a few black spots for Craig's Casino Royale.
I wonder if this problem will be fixed with the next actor will be un intentionally continue since then ( The living Daylights). Its not a horrible mistake after all they all have reedemed themselves after all.
Dalton had his great film made for him in Licence to kill
Pierce git his perfect film in The World is not enough
Craig got his perfect film in Skyfall.
the first 3( The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Casino Royale) are great as well its just that they needed a few more touches.
Lets compare them with their jackets for their tuxedos.
The first one is a little big or small
The second is fixed but not quite yet perfect
By the third fix they got the perfect size for them ( with Dalton was in second try)

LTK wasn't free from the references to the Moore era either, but it was definitely darker and more brutal than TLD, and Dalton's interactions with the villain there were so much better than in TLD.
I would also say that for the three actors you mentioned, their first films were definitely their best.
