The reason why I don't like Zao's character - and particularly his diamond face - is that it is a so obvious attempt to add some iconic element to an otherwise uninteresting character. I know other henchmen have their gadgets like Jaws or Teehee but these gadgets have a particular reason and contribute to the overall menace of the character. Zao does not actually have any particular skills and the diamonds do not contribute to anything. I have always found that he is more or less only a weird looking Asian man with little personality.

PTS: SP (Both are good. Too bad things fall apart afterwards).
Title Track: SP (Wasn't easy to vote on this...ick)
Title Credits: DAD (Would actually be competitive in an elimination game)
Main Villain: SP (Good lord, DAD hurts here the most)
    Main Bond Girl: SP (Easy)
Henchman: SP (Diamond face had more potential though)
Plot: DAD (Speaks to how implausible the SP plot is)
    Dialogue: SP ("Yo momma")
Score: SP (Not a strong effort from either)
Settings: SP (The clinic clinches it for me...wonderful..desert lair and Rome work too)
Action: SP (Strongest element in SP...great all-around)
Humour: SP (DAD almost wins for being so bad at it)
Cinematography: SP (Err...Mexico City was brown...that was cool).
Benign Bizarre: DAD (Hard to top here)
Suspense: SP (The "brother" stunt hurt a lot. DAD has no suspense though.)
Minor Characters: SP (James Bond and Friends win here...to the detriment of SP).
Glamour: DAD (Ice palace scene was nice. Changed my vote. DAD is better)
Bond Performance: SP (Didn't give Brosnan much to work with. DC only marginally better).

    BOND PERFORMANCE: Sean Connery
  • As we conclude Brosnan's run, and the first continuity of Bond (whatever that means), Spectre notches another victory, by a margin of 355-156-13. As with last round, it triumphed in the total games by a lopsided margin, this time 24-3-1. I don't imagine it will have quite such an easy run as it takes on Daniel Craig's first entry, 2006's Casino Royale!

PTS: CR (SP's is strong, but it just can't compare)
    Title Track: CR
    Title Credits: CR
    Main Villain: CR
Main Bond Girl: CR (none of these last four have been remotely close)
Henchman: SP (Who even is the henchman in CR?)
    Overall Plot: CR
    Dialogue: CR
Score: CR (we're back to utter blowouts)
Settings: Tie (CR gets more use out of them, but SP is so strong on the locations themselves it forces a tie)
Action: CR (the parkour chase is iconic, and the rest is strong as well)
Humor: CR (less of it, but excellently used)
    Cinematography: SP
Benign Bizarre: CR (for the torture sequence)
    Suspense: CR (come on, now)
    Minor Characters: CR
    Glamour: CR
Bond Performance: CR (Craig's strongest vs. his weakest, pretty cut and dry)

A blowout for CR, basically as expected. The final tally is 15-2-1. Will SP fare any better on your scorecards, or is it headed for another crushing defeat?

PTS: CR (SP's is good as well but CR is riveting and has a Flemingesque 'Cold War feel')

Title Track: CR (I always liked You Know My Name but I've grown to love it. The lyrics, themes, and banging opening are a statement of intent.)

Title Credits: CR (another great work by Kleinman)

Main Villain: CR (original Bond villain effortlessly realised by a class actor. His often wordless work is a delight).

Main Bond Girl: CR (Vesper - Green and Craig have real chemistry and her character is well developed. The hint of tragedy ever present in her performance even from the beginning. She also makes a significant and convincing impact considering we don't even see her for the first half of the film.)

Henchman: SP (Close - I really like Mollaka the bomb maker because he's in an iconic scene - that wonderful parkour chase. And he displays considerable skills. But Hinx is a formidable threat with a hell of a presence and a thrilling fight with Bond. He's also in the grand tradition of Bond Henchmen. So I'll give this one to Hinx.)

Overall Plot: CR (Fleming - nuff said)

Dialogue: CR (Many quotable lines. Smart and threatening dialogue)

Score: CR (Arnold's best for me.)

Settings: CR (Casino! And the Venice finish is classic Bond)

Action: CR (That parkour sequence, that Miami airport chase, Stairwell fight, Aston car flip and Venice sinking building.)

Humour: CR ('That last hand nearly killed me')

Cinematography: CR (Close one - but I love the way that the crane fight is filmed. The PTS in black and white is so evocative. The Venice sequences are beautiful.)

Benign Bizarre: CR (CR's torture scene trumps SP's. Fleming does benign bizarre very well!)

Suspense: CR (By light years. The suspense across the narrative is exemplary in CR.)

Minor Characters: CR (Mr White, Mathis, Felix, Solange)

Glamour: CR (The casino scenes - Dan in a tux, Vesper in that dress. The elegance of the Venice scenes.)

Bond Performance: CR (My favourite Craig performance.)

    CR 17
    SP 1

SP was lucky to get one category. But CR is simply one of my favourite films ever (along with FRWL).
