It's a little different here in the UK as this is broadcast on a satelite channel we don't get lots of individual stations and this is shown on Sky Living but I personally couldn't wait for this to be screened here and downloaded it as it's not here till early May and will continue to do so until they bring them closer to the U.S transmit.
I don't understand why it couldn't be shown almost the same time as in the U.S, this kind of attitude pretty much encourages illiegal downloading, at least they get it right with likes of GOT and the Walking Dead. I would pay to see this like Netflix did with House of Cards but we don't even get that option, hence the questionable route I take.
I've got the Blu ray and watched it again since it was broadcast here last year and it stands up really well the 2nd time round.
All I can say is, JUSTICE!!
I love old teamwork espionage shows. I'm glad M:I lasted on tv for 7 seasons. So far I'm halfway in season 1. So far there have been some nice nods to Bond. One episode reminded me a lot of Casino Royale. Even had a red DB5 appear. I now must carry on with the mission. :)
Intriguing, dark, twisted, funny, irreverent.
It was everything I hoped it would be. Thornton and especially Freeman were outstanding. Can't wait for the next episode.
I watched a little bit of it myself. I don't know the plot but the bits I saw were shocking. Plus I'll watch anything with Martin in it.
Mind you only 2 1/2 epiosodes of Season One (1961) even exist, so if you weren't around at the time, the bulk of the original episodes have been lost to posterity.
But it wasn't until S2 (62-63), that the Avengers really cranked up with its Bond influenced spyfy format, featuring Steed as lead character and Blackman as action-girl partner.
Those episodes that you are watching are really the first episodes of the classic 5 season Avengers run.
Other characters from those initial S2 episodes, who were eventually weeded out, as Blackman's Cathy Gale achieved prominence, were John Rollason as Dr. Martin King and Julie Stevens as the forgotten Avenger girl Venus Smith.
Currently I am ploughing through the four volume dvd collection of Avengers 65, which features the first 13 episodes of S4 which introduced Diana Rigg as Emma Peel.
Then I will order Avengers 66 which completes S4. And then I will order Avengers 67 which is the complete S5 and the second of the two Emma Peel seasons, and the first season to be shot in colour.
Final season S6 was 68-69 with Linda Thorson as Tara King replacing Rigg as Peel. Rigg of course was off to follow in her predecessor's (Blackman's) footsteps, as big screen Bond girl.
S1, 1961: Ian Hendry as Dr. David Keel, MacNee as Steed
S2, 62-63: MacNee, John Rollason as Dr. Martin King, Julie Stevens as Venus Smith and Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale
S3, 63-64: MacNee and Blackman
..........19 month hiatus.........
S4, 65-66: MacNee and Rigg
S5, 1967: MacNee and Rigg (first colour season)
S6, 68-69: MacNee and Linda Thorson
Interestly Man From Uncle moved to colour with its second season 65-66, while Avengers during the same period stayed b&w.
First 7 episodes, thus far in my MacNee/Rigg Avengers re-visit feature several Bond actors such as a young Robert Brown, Steven Berkhoff, many years before OP, plus pre-OHMSS Bernard Horsfall, Burt Kwouk post GF, and a young Geoffrey Palmer, more than 30 years prior to TND. More to come I imagine.
Big Finish has released a first audiobox of the Avengers based upon the scripts of season 1, having heard them I am sure as an Avengers fan you would really enjoy them too.
Still ploughing through Avengers 65. Julian Glover makes an appearance as a young Soviet Colonel villain.
An audio box of Season One. That would be real interesting as S1 is lost to video. Audio treatments would be the next best thing.
Mind you Avengers S1 from what I've read, was a different kind of duck. Ian Hendry as Dr. David Keel is the main character. Its not a spyfy show. That format took shape as S2 evolved with Steed and Gale. Steed I don't believe was even cast as an agent in S1.
He was some kind of foil for Hendry's doctor adventures.
Avengers as we know it, I think launched with S2 in 1962. There was foresight on the part of the producers to ride the coming spy wave, foreshadowed by Eon's ramping up production of the first of the hugely popular Fleming 007 novels.
" I got the box as a present from my wife, she knows of my love for stuff like this."
Great wife. Reminds of an old gf, who got me the first two John Gardner Bond novels, when I didn't even know such books existed. I should have proposed on the spot. Imagine all the other neat stuff I might have accumulated by now.
Poirot's skills must be rubbing of on me, as...
And why so many characters in the american televison are getting high all the time?
We are 4 episodes into this and unless this drops the ball in it's conclusion this could quite possibly the best thing the BBC has done in years, scratch that, not just the BBC but British TV full stop. A thriller that can stand alongside the likes of Breaking Bad and True Detective, no I'm not joking it's that good.
It's not like I've ever watched anything by it's writer Sally Wainwright or a fan of Sarah Lancashire but something peaked my interest so we sky + it and boy I'm glad we did. Brilliantly acted by all, Lancashire is utterly riveting and the supporting cast like Steve Pemberton are excellent, visceral and truly tense, I just hope it lives up to it's promise but I'll take this over the likes of the grossly overrated Wire wannabe The Shadow Line any day of the week.
If you haven't watched it, watch it!!
It's a slow burner to begin with and is not a fast paced kind of show. But it does reward you with layer upon layer of character development and plot.
I started trying to watch it on FX years back and gave up, someone lent me Season 1 on DVD and I plunged in, within a week I was done and I'd ordered S2 on Amazon, it took me just over a month to have the whole series done.
As Willy says you will get rewarded, I loved Breaking Bad when it was on but for me The Wire is in another class, BB is an easy watch in comparison and saying you've watched a few episodes and then dismissed the series is outright lazy and I'll refuse to take any valid opinion from anyone about the show who hasn't at least done a season, give it a few episodes in and you'll be hooked.
GOT is great but the Wire is far more complex and dense. Plus the characters are so richly drawn and you'll grow to love some of them and despise others, it a hugely rich tapestry that has for my money not been bettered.
Another show that's like that is 'Hannibal,' and as much as I wanted to like it, I can't get into it. My friend said that where I stopped, though, is where it gets really good, so maybe, just maybe, I'll give it another shot one day.
