I wasn't aware of that premise in a Clancy Ryan novel @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7. You could be on to something. There are a lot of subplots developing and I'm curious to see where they go with them. For now I'm hooked.

Kiefer is perfect in the role, and it's a nice counter to House of Cards, with a top man here with integrity who 'fell into it' rather than an ambitious shark who did everything to get there in the Netflix series.

It's definitely a fascinating role for a fascinating time, not only in comparison to other show's depictions of the presidency, as you said, or even in contrast to our own current, crazy election in America where there's great concern for the future of the country. It seems the office of the presidency is on everyone's minds these days, for good reason. Hopefully the show takes off and gets some awards/recognition.

Now that I think about it, Fox could have taken Kiefer's Bauer and put him in this exact situation with little trouble, and think how crazy that would have been.

That's a good point, and I think the producers and Sutherland gave this some thought.

After all, 24 was launched around the time of 911 and was very prescient in terms of predicting terrorist attacks, and a black president. There is indeed that fear of potential chaos in the country now depending on the election results, and they may have timed it perfectly again to ride the public sentiment.

I think Kiefer realized this kind of role would allow him to continue to do what he does best (play an everyman hero in over his head), but only this time in a less 'action based' capacity which is more credible given his age.

Quite. It'll be interesting seeing him transition from an iconic blunt instrument character to a less capable diplomat as a true everyman.

Currently watching Designated Survivor as it airs. This is the new Kiefer Sutherland show. They've aired two episodes so far, and it's been impressive. Sutherland is tv's version of Tom Hanks imho. An everyman that a viewer can root for. Natasha McElhone really needs to provide some advice on aging gracefully, because she looks just like she did almost 20 years ago in Ronin. Maggie Q (reason enough to watch) & Virginia Madsen co-star.

Based on what I've seen so far, I recommend this show.

Virginia Madsen? Alright, i'm interested, where do I find Designated Survivor?

@MajorDSmythe, it airs on ABC in the US/Canada. If you're in the UK, I think you can get it on Netflix UK.

@bondjames I just noticed there is a Bond alumni in 'Designated Survivor', in the person of Kevin McNally who was featured in the Liparus climax in TSWLM.

Was blown away by 'Westworld' last night, about to give the premiere another viewing. I can tell this will be the next big show that I follow, there aren't too many I bother to watch as they air.

@DaltonCraig007, I had no idea McNally was in TSWLM. I'll look out for him the next time I watch the film.

@Creasy47, Westworld looks great from the trailers. Sadly I don't have an HBO subscription so will have to wait for the blu ray.

I don't have a subscription to Netflix, so unless it shows up on a tv channel, i'll wait for the DVD.

Thanks to recommendations from @bondjames and @Creasy47, I watched the first 2 episodes of Designated Survivor and the pilot of Westworld.

Absolutely stunning new shows. Kiefer Sutherland is a total legend, and the nail bitting tension and intensity of the story starts within 3 minutes of the 1st episode. Really enjoying it so far, it seems both like a real successor to '24' and, as @bondjames said, the antithesis of 'House of Cards'. Natasha McHelhone looks stunning. Can't wait to see what happens in the next episodes.

As for Westworld, this new show is totally off the charts. One of the best, if not the best pilot episode I've seen in years. Stunningly shot, I thought I was watching a big budget film and not a tv show. Powerhouse performances from Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins. The plot is completely bonkers and I really can't predict where it will go next, so I will be glued to the screen as the season progresses.

Just finished watching the Westworld pilot for the second time. This is going to be a great sci-fi show and I can already imagine the sort of wild and crazy theories people will come up with. I for one think that Cullen maybe a host or at least that's the impression the show was giving off. Great cast; it's always good seeing Jeffery Wright in something and that bar shootout was pretty damn good. Can't wait for the next episode.

@doubleoego, haven't seen it yet. Is it anything like the original Westworld? Any homages? Connections? Anything?

Yeah, this show is based off the movie, in which guests pay to be part of a techno futuristic theme park full of synthetic/hosts where they can do what ever they want. So far it's only been one episode so things could change from subsequent episodes.

As a fan of the movie, I envy you guys seeing Westworld...I don't have HBO.

The last TV show I saw was Miami Vice, "One Way Ticket", with guest star John Heard, from 1986 during Season 2. I have all the MV DVDs, but can't resist watching if one of the episodes is on TV, as it was last night.

Westworld Well that was good great pilot, the show is already posing many questions moral, ethical and philosophical. WW has echos of Star Trek Next Generation, A.I. and Doctor Who (notably the Rebel Flesh Episodes) of course the original WW film seeded concepts that many Sci fi films and TV shows built upon.

Had a break from Alias to watch Luke Cage. I was satisfied when I went through 13 episodes in a day, back-to-back.

@doubleoego, have you seen it, yet?

EDIT: Just checked the previous page. Your review definitely sits well with my opinion.

Doctor Who The Name of the Doctor. I liked the smith run Moffat ideas were still good for the most part, this is a good anniversary episode.

For those of you who loved the 'Westworld' premiere as much as I did, it appears the second episode is now up early. Just logged into HBO Now and the first thing that appears is 'Watch Episode 2 Now - Stream The New Episode Early.' Think I'm going to rewatch the premiere tonight and watch the new episode right after.

Finished watching the second season of Daredevil. Very good, the second half of the series in particular, and nicely set up for season 3.

Also watched the whole of the Luke Cage series. Yeah, this was also ok. It was slow going at times, but that worked in it's favour as the twists and turns during the show always kept you wanting more, it did for me anyway. The action, when it arrived, seemed a bit clunky in parts, but the show wasn't set up for that, in the way Jessica Jones wasn't.

Mike Colter is a decent fit; I loved the
flashback when he escapes prison and he ends up with his bright yellow top and tiara, nice tribute to the comic book
Cage. Simone Missick as Misty Knight was decent, as was Mahershala Ali as Cornell Stokes, but, for me, the standout was Alfre Woodward as Mariah, terrific performance from her.

    All in all, decent stuff.

Awesome stuff, @Shark_0f_Largo. Very good review, sir. :)
  • Did anyone see the season premier of Supergirl yet? I'm curious to hear how the new Superman did. He has great potential I think; his features remind me of a modern Kirk Alyn

WOW! Westworld literally took my breath away, stunning cast and what an atmosphere it has. Great to see Hopkins not being hammy and delivering a genuinely intriguing character.

Ramin Djawadi who has already delivered one of televisons most stirring and memorable themes with Game of Thrones excels once again with another impressive theme and score.

If HBO were looking for what was going to replace GOT then I think they might have found it. Can't wait to see where we are going with this, the possibilities are endless!

Columbo: Butterfly in Shades of Grey (1994) on DVD. I've seen a bit of it. William Shatner guest stars for the second and last time.

There have been a lot of ads on tv for this show but I don't know if I can get EPIX (I have to check). It looks interesting. Armitage has Bondian qualities imho.

Recently saw Space Seed and The City on the Edge of Forever from the original Star Trek series. I actually didn't grow up with the show, but I must say I loved these, and I'm thinking about just getting myself a box set of the originals.

Two of the very best episodes, I have the 3 seasons on BD think they are reasonably cheap at the moment around £50 for all 79 episodes... I paid considerably more though a worthwhile purchase.
