Colin is an underrated Doctor, but his own era right royally shafted him. Of his era, I do like The Mark of The Rani, Attack Of The Cyberman and The Two Doctors.
True I find his tenure fascination because of the politics that were going on at the time, as you know much of that crept into the writing of the show.
I don't have Colin Bakers other episodes I was pricing them up yesterday, I'll buy Twin Dilemma first in the meantime I bought The Five Doctors I can't find my other copy.
It didn't help how the working relationship between JNT and Eric Saward broke down, then Saward running off to give that tell all interview . I would have liked to have seen more of the 6th Doctor, but not at the expense of the 7th.
I would also like to mention Vengeance On Varos as another good one from his era, foreshadowing all the reality tv that we are inundated with today.
I watched numerous documentarys a very good one was called Trials and Tribulations, to say Saward was angry was a understatement. Jonathan Nathan Turner really did make some dubious decisions, it appeared chaotic during his tenure.
You're a cool dad, @chrisisall. I love my parents and we've always had a good relationship, but I'd have to chain them both to a chair to watch a genre film or marathon of movies. Just not those kinds of people. ;)
I think the reason I've stayed away thus far is simply because I found myself not really enjoying later Tom Baker/Davison/McCoy as much as the 60s and 70s stuff. JNT, I suppose, in other words.
@chrisisall, I love those little moments you look back on as being the period where you went from not knowing about certain films or TV shows to becoming utterly obsessed with them.
I never had a moment like that with my parents, but I did with my best friend. We were sitting in a high school history class one day and when he asked me if I'd ever seen a Sean Connery Bond film and I answered no, he emphatically ordered me to see them as soon as possible. And sure enough, two weeks later I was channel surfing late at night and found a little film called Goldfinger playing on a classic movie network. Nothing was ever the same again after that point. These days I always tease my friend about the monster he created, and I'm the one informing him about all the minutia of the Bond series now. ;)
Trial of a Timelord has improved with time and personally I think there is some excellent dialogue throughout the four parts of the overall story arc. Something fans still talk about now happens in the series, something in canon that has yet to happen (when you know what it is, that sentence makes sense ;) )
The documentaries on the 1986-87 period make for interesting viewing. JNT was responsible for the casting of my favourite Doctor (McCoy) so that goes in his favour, but I agree that he dropped the ball on more than one occasion, too many times during the Colin Baker era.
Oh no no no, Trial Of A Timelord is far from a highlight, nor would I suggest it as a starting point for the 6th Doctor. The four stories I suggested (The Mark of The Rani, Attack Of The Cybermen, The Two Doctors and Vengeance On Varos) are the highlights for me.
And I wouldn't let the questionable choices of JNT stop you from watching 80's Who. There are good and bad in the 80's, just are there is in other decade of the show.
I have seen this before though last time I watched it Hans Zimmer was not as well known, not his finest work though this song brings a smile
I had heard the song before, but I had never seen that video in its entirety. The song is very on the nose, but it was made with the best intentions.
Very much of its time I think it's great, I was 11 when this was released, I have alot of nostalgia for the 80's.
Thanks for that heads up, then. I genuinely thought it was the de facto Colin Baker serial. Not sure how I came to that conclusion.
As far as JNT goes, these are the stories I've seen from his era:
Full Circle
State of Decay
Warrior's Gate
Logopolis
Black Orchid
Earthshock
The Caves of Androzani
Ghost Light
Far from comprehensive, but enough I feel to give me a taste of expectations. It's been ages since I last watched any of them, really, however so I can't rightly say how I'd find them now. (Off the top of my head, Caves of Androzani and Ghost Light were nearer the top of the list in terms of enjoyment.)
But I do love DW, so I'll get to them all eventually. The 80s were just kind of the place I hit a bit of a wall.

On a related note, just watched "Runaway Bride" -- years since I last saw it. Probably one of the episodes I've watched least. Never really though much of it, but I was really taken with it tonight. I found it quite refreshing. In general, I find the RTD era so good. Always seems to hit the spot nowadays.
5 celebs travel around a number of states in the US where cannabis is legal. On a mission to learn the pro's and con's and also to form their own opinions on whether it should be legalised here in the UK?
It features Bobby George, John Fashanu, Linda Robson, Pam St Clement, and my favourite Christopher Biggins! OMG how I laughed at this celeb fact finding exercise. Part 2 is tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV1.
Give it a watch and post your thoughts.
Finally, it's on Netflix! I'm only four episodes in but so far not bad. It has a slow build up for sure but I think the next episode or two will be the start of the action.
Just found out that an English speaking version has been made simultaneously of both seasons. On Netflix it is known as NORSEMEN. Absolutely hilarious.
That looks interesting I'll see if it's on UK Netflix
About halfway through season 1 and I'm gutted I've never watched it before, it's so good!
Love the black humour and the cast are just incredibly good!
Might even give the novels a go....
The novels are a completely different beast from the series. Still great, but don't go into them expecting to get more insight to the TV series' characters.
Really interesting. The overall view was very interesting. Found myself pretty much in agreement.
