That's all I want from these games. There's not much else they do better. They're hardly challenging, they require no tactics other than run and shoot, storywise they're terrible and every character is either a generic soldier or a generic villian, etc.
I just want to blast my way through some OTT set pieces using some polished shooting mechanics, because that's what these games do really well.
Yeah it's like a Micheal Bay film but playing through a Micheal Bay film is lots of fun.
It's fine if you try and focus on a story in a videogame but then stick to it. Black Ops 2 was still a game that revolved around explosions so the story felt shoe horned in.
I think the best example of story done right in a game is Assassins Creed 2. Not only were the writing and characters fantastic, they also made sure that the story dictated the gameplay, not the other way around.
EG- You spend an hour or so playing as the lead character before he becomes an Assasssin at the start. It'd be much cooler opening the game with a parkour sequence and an assassination but they want to develop the story and characters.
Black Ops 2 though, like all the other COD games, has a story that revolves around the set pieces. EG- What was the point of the entire Aghanistan sequence? It added nothing apart from a set piece involving horses and a throw away line about the CIA.
I also didn't think Black Ops 2 changed the formula as much as the reviews made out. There are some really annoying "strike force" missions, some choices (some of which have no impact at all, and even the one's that did change things I didn't care about because as I said, terrible story) and you can choose your gun at the start of each mission.
I don't think Black Ops 2 bought as much change as the reviews made out and I don't think it was as fun as previous games.
The levels are so small, so infinity ward make it hard to move more than an inch without getting killed. The medal of honour series is much better single player but terrible multiplayer.
As for the Black ops series, I will never forgive treyarch for the first one. It wasn't fit for purpose and took over 3 months to sort the online problems for the ps3. It was however a much better single player experience than any of the MW series.
Multiplayer is alright but I don't really play the multiplayer on these games anymore. I get bored of it quickly because it's been the same for a good few years gameplay wise, and new maps aren't enough to keep me intrested.
I love Doom 3 because of all the differences to Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom. I've been a fan of Doom since 1995, and I play the originals a lot still, I play Doom 3 a lot still, and I never feel like Doom 3 is worse than Doom 1 and 2, I love it just the damn same, because it's a horrorfest, not a mindless shooter like the originals, even though I love the mindless shooting of the originals.
So, did you play Doom 3 on the PC or Xbox back in 2005, and if so, how different is the BFG Edition?
I'm a huge fan of the game and its expansion packs. It's a scary, dark and at the same time fascinating journey through the various buildings and compounds on a colonized Mars. That's exactly the kind of stuff I like. Truly Doom 3 is a great game and the BFG edition is a welcome return to it on modern PC's.
Is the BFG edition really nice looking? I hear they improved the graphics quite a bit but I'm not sure that alone makes it worth another buy
I also have Assassin's Creed 2 and 3 that I got free with my PS3, but I'm not sure if I should get the first one and play them in order.
What did you think about Uncharted 2, @jackdagger?
I would skip the first one and start with the second (you won't miss much), but I would play Brotherhood and Revelations before playing 3.
Thanks for the advice! I might do that. I actually have Brotherhood and Revelations as well (it was the Ezio Trilogy that came free with my PS3 system).
Don't skip the first one (it's not a popular opinion, but some, like myself, prefer AC1/Altair), it's not perfect but it does feature the best Assassin, time and setting. My ranking of the series (minus AC3 which i've not played), is the same as the order the games have been made. Diminishing returns? :-?
I'm still playing Tomb Raider, and loving it. The more of this game I play, the more Lara progresses through her arc, the closer this comes to toppling Legend as my favourite game in the series.
Mixed feelings. The graphics are good, as is the gameplay, but three hours in, have some serious reservations about the narrative.
Lara is really rattled the first time she kills someone. You would hope then that killing other humans, and animals, is a rare occurrence, to make more narrative and emotional impact, but no, the game disappointingly reverts immediately to a "shoot the Russians and Islanders" with o narrative back up or reason for this.
Dissappointing.
As Bond would put it, after your first kill, the second is 'considerably' easier
I started playing Dishonored without killing anyone today. Challenging but worth it. Brilliant game that I haven't played since I finished it so it's great going back to it. If you haven't played this then you're missing out :P
And I don't mean that just regarding character and story. In the same way Casino Royale rebooted the series so drastically that during early moments of the films its almost unrecognizable as a Bond film, the gameplay is so drastically different from previous TR games it's almost unrecognizable. But as the game progresses, it turns out this was just what was needed to make the series relevant again in this day and age, still delivering the essential elements of the Lara Croft formula, in much the way Daniel Craig ended up delivering the essential elements of the classic James Bond.
You shouldn't be too surprised. You know what they say about your first kills.
The second is . . .
Yes. Considerably.
See now that @Master_Dahark beat me to it, but couldn't resist.
These games are so epic. Shame I don't have my ps3 anymore, it means I can't play the new one. Anybody know if it's any good?
It's got some very decent reviews. I'll be aiming to buy it soon, if I can decide between that, Tomb Raider and Bioshock.
Let us know what you make of Bioshock when you get round to them.
