The historical sections have great stories with really fleshed out characters, gorgeous open worlds with tons of fun stuff to do, amazing soundtracks, lots of variation/variety, etc.

The modern day stuff has always felt tacked on, it's a framing device for a series that didn't even need it. Desmond was a shit character and the stuff it had you doing was never fun. The story was cool at first but it was clear they had no idea what to do with it and eventually it became a jumbled mess. After the brilliant ending of AC 2 they seemed to have no idea what to do so we got plot twists that made no sense at all, plot points that were completely abandoned, characters that never got the ending they deserved, things that were set up and forgotten about, scenarios that just felt like padding because the next main game wasn't ready, etc. At the end of AC III, before you can open the temple door, you first have to sit through huge exposition dumps detailing what the race who came before were. This should have been revealed to us naturally over the course of the story, not just dumped on us at the last minute. And then finally we get that shitty ending to Desmonds story.

The historical sections have fun gameplay. The modern day sections (with the exception of AC III) have boring gameplay. The historical sections have great writing. The modern day sections have awful writing.

@Master_Dahark I'd skip the first one and start with II. You'll understand it fine and I think AC II will get you into the series more because it's a much better game on every level imo (it's still regarded by most fans, myself included, as the best in the series). You can always go back and play the first one afterwards anyway if you feel like it.

My ranking of the series would probably be

    1) AC 2
    2) AC IV
    3) AC III
    4) AC Revelations
    5) AC Rogue

    6) AC Brotherhood

    7) AC
    8) AC Unity

The top five are all fantastic games imo. But I thought Brotherhood, while making some great gameplay improvements, was a let down story wise. The original hasn't aged well and is very sinple and repetitive, and Unity was a disappointing mess imo.

My ranking of the protagonists would be

    1) Ezio
    2) Edward
    3) Connor
    4) Adewale
    5) Shay
    6) Haytham

    7) Altair
    8) Arno

    9) Desmond

Haven't played Liberation yet so I can't rank Aveline, and I haven't read the comics so I can't include the Russian guy.

I've just played and completed Rouge for the first time myself. Short and sweet but very enjoyable. I need to get onto Unity now. I've no idea what to expect with that.

I've been playing a lot of World of Tanks on PC, Episodes of Liberty City, and Euro Truck Simulator 2. All fun in their own way. Any others around here into PC games? I know most of you guys are on PS3, PS4, and XBOX stuff.

I love certain PC games. Half-Life and Doom are absolute favorites of mine, but I prefer consoles simply because you don't have to modify them for certain games.

Yeah, I totally agree with what you are saying. Consoles are way simpler and user-friendly by a longshot. I have stuck with the PC mainly because it allows me to accomplish a lot of things at the same time. I can have 3 screens and watch a Bond movie on one, play a game on another screen, and browse the web or view Voice Over IP applications on another screen.

The other thing for me is I am so used to using a mouse and keyboard that it's difficult for me to imagine being as accurate or good at FPS and such. I know I'd probably eventually get the hang of the controllers because I played the hell out of some Goldeneye on N64 and that controller felt great.

I like the pricing on PC games as well. If your willing to wait a bit, you can get main titles for dirt cheap compared to $59.99. I believe you can do this as well on the consoles now, maybe just not as steep of a discount as PC. One thing I do not care for is having to pay for the online services on PS4 and Xboxone.

I've really been considering getting a PS4 during Black Friday this season. Maybe they will hit $299 or under.

I'm thinking about getting GTA V on Xbox One. Only one of my friends plays video games reguarly (while a couple of other friends do have consoles, they don't play reguarly, they're not really that into games, and none of them have Xbox One, they still have 360's and ps3's) and he's been telling me for a while to get it so we can play online together. He got AC Unity, despite not owning previous games, to play the co op with me, so I feel like I owe him, and with online heists now available, and the first person option looking cool, I am tempted.

I know a few members here have it, so is it worth getting? Has GTA Online been improved since it was first out (I played it on 360 when it was first out but I thought it was pretty boring, it felt like a constant grind and I didn't like how you couldn't really customise your character much, and I sold the game soon after)? The heists look pretty cool and I did enjoy the single player, wouldn't mind playing it again with better graphics and first person.

The thing that frustrates me most about Unity is its wasted potential. There's some very cool stuff in there (the new parkour, the new stealth, the new Dishonoured, Hitman style Assassination missions), and it's an amazing looking game. It could have easily been the best Assassin's Creed. Unfortunately, weird design choices (British accents in France, features gone from previous games, 100% synch objectives still there despite the empthasis on making your own choices), poor side content and a bad story full of one dimensional unfleshed out characters made it the worst one for me. Like any AC game, it does have its good points (co op was fun, and the customisation was great), but I thought it was the weakest of the series, unfortunetly.

Still having a merry old time with GTA5 Online, with my custom 'me'

Wow I love how enthusiastic you two are about the Assassins Creed games! Believe it or not, I've never played any-- though I notice they're on sale on the PSN currently.

Since I'm this far behind, maybe you could shed some light, @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7: should I even bother starting from the beginning at shit point? Or is there one in particular I should begin with?
I started the series playing Black Flag, and my life was overtaken by it. There's so much to do and so much to explore that there is never an opportunity to get bored. When I first got it I'd play it for most of the day and still hated taking a break from it.
Good to know-- I remember when 3 came out, I almost blind-bought it just because it looked so impressive. I ultimately didn't do it for fear of being completely lost. Now I'll get online and pick it up for 10 bucks! Or hell, I could get the 'ultimate edition' for 15!

I did end up buying Assassins Creed III & IV while the sale was going on. Maybe you can help me with something that wasn't 100% clear to me: (SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't played)

Are you literally going back in time and becoming your ancestors, or back in time and experiencing what they experienced (as in you're not in control) or is it some sort of VR simulation? It feels like a VR simulation because of the way the background 'loads' sometimes.... but I thought I'd ask someone who's played them all.

I'm still a Resident Evil fan, despite everything the franchise has had to endure, so to get ready for Resident Evil Revelations 2's disc release on the 18th, I've been playing through the series in no particular order.

    Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles
    Resident Evil
    Resident Evil 4
Up next, Resident Evil Revelations 1

I called into GAME to see if they had any copies of RE2 for the PS3 in stock. If they did, it would have cost £29.99. As they didn't, they ordered me a copy, to be delivered to my house, for £22.99. It's been shipped, and I can't wait to get back to what Resident Evil should be, survival horror. :)

Nice work @Master_Dahark I can't wait to get to play some GTA 5 when they finally release it on April 14th.

    @Master_Dahark: Assassin's Creed is a VR simulation.
If it's a VR-- is the purpose behind it to discover a lost secret? Or is it somehow changing history? I get that in the present it's Assassins vs Templars and it's been going on for thousands of years (or more), but why the VR?
Granted I'm not far at all into Assassins Creed III (I'm on the ship at the beginning) so it might be explained to me-- but I'd enjoy it more if I knew what the hell was going on, lol

Maybe I should have started with part 1...

It was discovering lost secrets. I don't know what it's mutated into. It might still be the same.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (PS3 - disk vers.)
It's fair to say that the previous 'Revelations' tried to nudge the series back to survival horror, only to become an action game with Resident Evil 6. Now we have Revelations 2, and the series is back to being all about survival horror. I have completed the first chapter of the Main Story, and the first gauntlet block of the Raid Mode, and all in all, so far, I am enjoying this one more than any other Resident Evil in a long time.

Episode 3 is where the story really kicks in. It's also where the ending choice happens. I got the bad ending my first way through, and am now replaying to get the good ending.

Multiple endings? Not that I would need an excuse to play through the again again, but it's good to know that I will have something to aim for. So long as the game doesn't take a nosedive later on, I think it will stand a good chance of being against my favourite RE games.

If you get past Episode One, you can beat and enjoy the game. Episode One is the only boring part of the game.

So, you played Raid Mode, what was your opinion on the first few levels being ripped from Resident Evil 6?

Yeah, I have been baffled by that. I have played a few now, and am wondering why RE6? All the RE games we have had up to this point, and yet there have been at least 6 settings consecutively from RE6. For starters, where's the Police Station from RE2?

I know nothing about 'Revelations 2,' but I've been craving some old school RE lately, and I want to check this out. That, or one of those remastered PS1 classics that's now on next-gen consoles.

Buy Resident Evil Remake HD Remaster. I hear it's an excellent port of the best game in the series, the Gamecune remake of RE1.

Agreed- they even have an option for better controls and if I'm not mistaken, the GameCube version did not have RE5 costumes

I haven't played ORC. But even if it were that version of the Police Station, at least it would mix up the locations. That is the only negative aspect of Revelations 2 I have to say so far.

I've never understood the dislike for the tank controls of the older games. They worked just fine for me. But, no, as it came out a whopping seven years earlier, the Gamecube version did not have the RE5 costumes.

I'd rather have no ORC police station than having the ORC police station. ORC took the RE2 police station, kept the main hall, and then changed everything else. There's a room that's supposed to be the police chief's office, and it looks nothing like even the Darkside Chronicles version of the same room.

Wow I guess it has been that long! :-O Didn't even put it together-- hell RE4 is over 10 years already now that I think about it.
That Game Cube was on point back then with all their exclusive remakes-- from Resident Evil to Twin Snakes-- and then Resident Evil ZERO... what did you think of that one? I remember liking it but I never finished it either. Sort of the one everyone forgot about...

Ah, it's not the same station? I didn't know that. In that case, then I would agree with you. If it's not THE station, then don't bother.

Seeing as how I don't use the PSN, I am hoping that the RE:Remastered will get a physical release in Europe. but I doubt it'll happen. But if it doesn't, then I won't loose sleep, as I have played both the original Resident Evil and it's Gamecube remake. Now I have a hankering for the original game.

I loved Zero. I hold it in much the same place I hold Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, as it was, in a way, a retread of everything Resident Evil Remake did, much as 3 was a retread of everything Resident Evil 2 did. It changed some things up, modified certain things (3 took away weapons taking multiple spaces and added the gunpowder system while Zero took away the item boxes and added the item dropping system), but was largely similar (3 and 2 both took place on the streets of Raccoon, while 1 and Zero both took place in mansions with other facilities beneath them).

PS3s are region free (at least in the US), just import the Japanese PS3 version, because that got a disc release for some reason. It has English voices and subtitles, though I don't know about the files or menus. I plan on importing it eventually.

If not that, I've heard good things about the Steam release of the Remaster. Plus, you get access to mods. Mods make PC gaming awesome.
