Many of my favourite films were made in the 70's. You can't beat Alien, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, Halloween, Taxi Driver, The Godfather...etc.

    But 1982 was a seminal year for me. I started to become very interested in cinema and that year produced some amazing genre films;
    Blade Runner
    E.T
    The Thing
    Conan The Barbarian
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan
    Mad Max 2
    First Blood
    Creepshow
    Tron

Great list @GoldenGun, I find everyone of your selections to be excellent, with the exception of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (didn't care for those at all), and I haven't seen THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (Wes Anderson has burned me every time, I will no longer take the bait). I hate to say it, because I do like his work, I've never seen Godard's LE MÉPRIS, I'll have to rectify that soon.

I show THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN in my classes every year and, like SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, it contains one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema (the Odessa Steps massacre, of course), but the film as a whole, though very good, doesn't hold me to that degree. So, I debate and usually decide not to include it on my best list.

If you only disliked those two, I'd say we have pretty much the same taste. Took a look at your list earlier, from the ones that I've seen I liked them all.

I really suggest you give LE MÉPRIS a go soon. I'd say it's probably my favourite of the bunch (read: favourite film of all time ). ;)

But that's the '80s. All comic book, kid's stuff and fantasy, with very little to counterbalance it.

It was the year that produced many great genre films regardless if you think they're 'kids stuff or fantasy' (I'd hardly call Blade Runner, The Thing or First Blood, 'kids stuff')

As a teenager it was the year that got me very interested in all genre's of cinema but the 70's is the greatest decade for me.

    My film list;

    Blade Runner (1982)
    Blue Velvet (1988)
    Jaws (1975)
    Deliverance (1972)
    Carrie (1976)
    Taxi Driver (1976)
    Alien (1979)
    Star Wars (1977)
    Goodfellas (1990)
    Reservoir Dogs (1992)
    Pulp Fiction (1994)
    The Wicker Man (1973)
    Apocalypse Now (1979)
    The Godfather (1972)
    The Exorcist (1973)
    Eraserhead (1977)
    Brazil (1985)
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
    Manhunter (1986)
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1980)

It's difficult for me to pick a favourite decade because I have favourites from all decades. I'm generally an action/suspense/thriller sort of chap (simple fella really).
    ---

I haven't seen too many 50's films so can't comment properly on that era. I'd like the period more if more films from that time were in colour. Having said that, my favourite film of all time is from the 50's, namely North By Northwest.

I do appreciate the innocence, colourfulness and style of the 60's films. Glamour (compared to today) combined with sharp wit & dialogue. Top non-Bond film for me - Charade

The 70's are ok, but I found them a little depressing to be honest. I'm a sucker for a happy Hollywood ending, & films like Kramer vs Kramer, The Champ & Love Story come to mind as spoiling the fun. Only Bond really stands out as being 'happy' during this time. The fashion was also not quite to my liking. I have to see more films from this period. Top non-Bond film for me - The Towering Inferno

I know many more films from the 80's. Larger than life, rock oriented soundtracks (and songs even), big hair and lots of sex are what characterize this period for me, along with poor special effects (some of the later Airport films come to mind along with Jaws 3 - awful). Love the harder edged thrash talking Hollywood hero though (Arnie, Sly, Mel, Bruce etc.). Top non-Bond film for me - Die Hard

The 90's are the period I'm most familar with, and I like this time the best. Lots of great suspense thrillers (my favourite genre), as well as innovative film making from Tarantino, Scorcese, the Cohen brothers etc. Not to mention, the long awaited return of 007. Top non-Bond film for me - Heat

The 00's started off very poorly for me, especially just post-911. It seemed like Hollywood had lost its nerve for a while. Only around mid-decade did I start to appreciate the output more. Top non-Bond film for me - Batman Begins

The 10's have been largely very derivative. It looks like Hollywood may have run out of gas, apart from the superhero fare. Too much reliance on remakes and franchises. Top non-Bond films for me - toss up between MI-RN, Inception, Captain America - WS, & SW-TFA

Actually there are many French movies I have to add to the list. Like La double vie de Véronique, Nikita and others. I may even do a French only list.

I did love the US version, I was really in love with Bridget Fonda in the nineties ;)

@DaltonCraig007 @DarthDimi and others of the French language region could maybe do French movie lists?

Ditto. Bridget in her prime was indeed a total babe. I even like her in some of her less known work like City Hall. My favourite of hers is Lake Placid.

And don't forget Single White Female, Singles, It Could Happen To You and Camilla.
I watched those movies countless times on LaserDisc in the nineties, including City Hall of course.
Camilla is like my favourite probably of the bunch because the incomparable Jessica Tandy is in it.

Any decade that could produce a film like Harold & Maud is a decade to be appreciated as films like that just can't be made any more.

Thanks @Thunderfinger . Typo. Do you believe that my mother took me to see that when I was 13? No wonder I'm a mess.

I saw that when I was 14. I almost watched The Exorcist when I was 11 but my parents didn't let me.

I snuck into the theatre to see THE EXORCIST at eleven (we all knew when the usher took her cigarette break). Scary, but being from a long line of atheists, it was nothing more than an excellent film.

I'm kind of glad I didn't watch it at the age of 11, considering that when I saw it in 1998, I couldn't sleep for a day or two.

I saw it back then with a friend who was pissed at me for laughing out loud at the the stupidity. It was a stupid movie. The Saturday Night Live skit with Richard Pryor nailed it.

I don't think that this is true. The variety of films has actually never been higher than today actually. But maybe these kind of films are not in the focus of the general moviegoer. But there are so many great films which have been produced in the last years. Not all of them are shown in the big theaters. For many of those you have to go to the alternative theater.

À BOUT DE SOUFFLE (1960 Godard)
    LE MÉPRIS (1963 Godard)
    BELLE DE JOUR (1967 Buñuel)
    LE SAMOURAÏ (1967 Melville)
    LE CERVEAU (1969 Oury)
    LE CERCLE ROUGE (1970 Melville)
    UN FLIC (1972 Melville)
    LE GRAND BLEU (1988 Besson)
    NIKITA (1990 Besson)

LA RÈGLE DU JEU is said to be a true masterpiece, it has been on my watchlist for ages. I'm going to give it a go very soon.

Shame we can't split the decades. I would probably go for 1967-1976. Certainly for American cinema.

Every decade is in with a shout, but I still love the 30s, followed by the 70s and 90s

I'd say it's the 70's for me, just a selection of this decade not in any particular order but it proves to me this is my favourite decade of film.

    The Exorcist
    Dirty Harry
    Godfather
    Godfather Pt 2
    Chinatown
    Dog Day Afternoon
    All The Presidents Men
    Star Wars
    Jaws
Close Encounters of The Third Kind
    The Taking of Pelham 123
    Taxi Driver
    Apocalypse Now
    Spy Who Loved Me
    Alien
    Halloween

Next would probably be the 90's. Plenty of great films in many deacdes but the 70's is my decade, most probably the same for music, 70's followed by the 90's.
