Safe Operation Market Garden's landmark

Ordinarily I'd never call in help from anyone, but this is, I think, a matter that concearns far more then just the tyne country I live in. Many of you know the history of Operation Market Garden, if only through the film 'A Bridge Too Far' with Connery as a Bond-connection in it.

One of the major landmarks of this battle, where so many British and Polish men lost their lives, is about to be taken down so they can build a house for the elderly there (cynical b******). Please help stop this affront to human dignity and help preserve this most important of buildings!

    Thanks everyone for signing! Sadly, the building can't be resqued, but it will be rebuilt like it was in the '40-ies. It'll also get it's old name back. It'll be a small scale care home for dementing elderly.

    yep. So it'll look like the original building, at the same spot, but it'll be rebuild.

    Sounds daft to me too, but I'm sure they'll have some excuse for it.

    As far as I can fathom it's in terrible shape, and structurally too damaged. The newly build hotel will, as said, get a destination as care home for dementing elderly. It will be open to the public every Airborne remembrence day, and the 'living room' will have wartime pictures and painings on the wall. There will also be a monument to remember the fallen at a prominent place.
    It'll also get it's name back 'Dreyeroord'.

    Well, that's the best that can be hoped for then. It's a result at least.

    It seems so. Not over enthusiastic here, but they fought their best. Perhaps quite fitting for the Market Garden operation.

    Yes, a partial victory to remember the brave soldiers in a military failure. At least those that lost their lives wont't now be forgotten thanks to the monument and pictures etc.

    Well it's more then a military failure. it's a daring enterprise that gave hope to millions to be liberated soon. The braveness of those involved (except for Montgommery who should've payed more head to intelligence reports about those Pantzers) is beyond words. They will be remembered.

    I guess folks reading tis thread will already be aware, but just in case...

    Shortly after the wars end, Operation Market Garden was re-created for the big screen. It used actual locations and every man featured was a veteran of the battle who were telling their own story and things they had personally done and witnessed. It's a fascinating piece of forgotten film making. It's about one hour twenty long but a must watch for those interested in this battle, or indeed in military history in general.

    Oh, I didn't mean to imply it was a complete failure or that the sacrifices of the Allied troops brought nothing. Sorry if it came across like that.

    Don't worry, I just wanted to tell that it has some very positive effects. Obviously some bad as well. Those living in the occupied part were heading in a winter known as the 'honger winter' (famine winter). The Nazi's became very tough and harsh, shedding all that was left of humanity. Still, it was a clear sign they were losing too.

    And as a people we're still increadeable thankfull for the sacrifice of these young men.
