Quantum Of Solace - Worst Movie Title?

edited October 2011 in Bond Movies Posts: 101
Total Film has released a list of the 50 worst movie titles of all time.
Our Mr. Bond makes into the top 10...
#6 "Quantum Of Solace" along side "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Freddie Got Fingered".

I think Quantum Of Solace gets a bad wrap as being a poor title. I personally like it and I don't think it's ever a bad thing having a little Ian Fleming thrown into the James Bond film world. However if you have to constantly explain and justify a film title then perhaps this wasn't the right title for the film.

Do you think QoS deserves to be so high on the list? Should any other titles have made it on instead?

it's on there because english is a dying language.

    quote from the website....

    ---------------------------------

Why So Terrible: The likes of On Her Majesty’s Service and From Russia With Love are but a distant memory. This odd Bond title rightly received reactions like “Eh?” and “What the-?!” from a very confused public.

    ---------------------------------

IT'S CALLED A DICTIONARY YOU IDIOTS - IT EVEN HAS IT'S OWN WEBSITE!! - TRY USING IT!! ~X(
  • I'm happy to have any title that doesn't include, "Die", "Kill", "Blood" and so on.
  • Could be here all night with this, but not going to

at time of release many people did question QOS as a feasible Bond title, regulars and neutrals in equal measure, a majority of people didn't even understand the title and made as much sense as Tomorrow Never Dies as one such example

Says #1 is a release called Ssssss or something, never heard of it strangely enough

If I have a quick look around my own movie collection I could maybe come up with one or two questionable titles without giving too much away

Face/Off, Dirty Harry, Blair Witch Project, Fish called Wanda etc, you get the idea

(You can add any Steven Seagal release of the last eight years that I don't own but don't tell him I said that)

QoS was a short story in the book FYEO along with four other stories. I always thought that FRWL and OHMSS were cool titles. If you looking for bad titles try TND, DAD as sh*tty titles.

How are either Dirty Harry or QoS bad titles? The people making the list need to enhance their brain functioning. QoS makes about as much sense as OP, and many still ponder what a Thunderball is. It is actually the name of the operation in TB, but people are too lazy to investigate nowadays. Obviously a badly put together list in every regard.

There is a lot wrong with QoS imho, but the title is most certainly not wrong. Pure Fleming cannot be wrong, Total Film is wrong as they have been before.

I wasn't keen on it being used. I remember remarking on KTBEU either before it was revealed or just after, that QOS sounded more like a title of a Doctor Who story, and I still think that. But in the age of the internet, was it really that hard for people (i'll single out journos as I would assume research would be part of thier job) to investigate the meaning behind the title.

I think QUANTUM OF SOLACE is a bit too high on that list. It feels a bit like the writer was going for a major scalp by putting a Bond film in there. A lot of the lower-ranked titles - like RAT PFINK A BOO BOO - are considerably worse.

QoS isn't the worst title around. For those who don't understand its meaning, there's at least the additional fact of Quantum, the organisation. I also like to say the words out loud - it sounds nice.

That, and the fact that Fleming's words are divine.

It certainly sounds more sophisticated than "Small Amount of Comfort." This is what Fleming's short story was about, so what else could it have been- "Bit of Peace"?
    "Minor Consolation"?

Well, QoS is at least the worst justified entry on the list. I mean, many speak for themselves (i.e. To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar (nr. 29))
, but just not understanding the meaning of a perfectly good English word doesn't make a title bad. It just means too many lack proper education.

Dear god Quantum of solace beat the incredibly strange creature... whatever that title is seriously! This is depressing...

I thought it was a brilliant title and fit perfectly as a direct sequel to Casino Royale as after the betrayal and loss of vesper Bond is looking for Solace some reason to keep on going. sure they might of not accurately depicted that in the film mind you but still Wilson's reason for choosing the title makes sense to me.

and I guess I'm the only person who thought Live Free or Die Hard was clever , I wonder what total film will think of when they see A Good Day to Die Hard.

Whatever next. How about Skyfall. That's not as good...
  • The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford...seriously? Sounds like a 60s B-movie.

#6?! Are you kidding me?! Get a dictionary you idiots of Total Film! Out of all the crappy film titles the world has seen QoS beats most of them? Pleeeeeeeeeeease. The mental cases who wrote up this list are angry at QoS not being CR and decided to trash every little thing about the film. Get your heads out of your a@#$% you senseless trolls.

The living Daylights sound more like ''worse'' title then QOS.
Strange is mabey a better name for the list.

Live Free Or Die Hard. Die Hard 4.0 should be higher in the list

Also there be some titles in the list who not be strange or worse but i think there at in the list because there don't like the movie. like Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, xxx and I stil know what you did last summer.

this site mentions Quantum of solace and Octopussy...

one question who wanted Risico over Quantum of solace as this site claims we all did at least QOS means something.

"Quantum Of Solace" at least has an air of mystery about it, unlike "Octopussy" which is the worst Bond title for me, hands down

"Quantum" is quite a cool sounding word, and a nice touch to also use the word for the name of the new nemesis organisation

"Solace" sounds sort of sophisticated and literary, unfortunately the movies script was not...

Quantum Of Solace i think is a terrible movie title.

Quantum of 'yeah, it's alright for a Bond film title'.
  • ummm a title that makes you stop, think and dare I say Question. I think it's a goodun' wubbish movie though.
  • I think the title and what it pertains too in the short story (yes I know the story and film are two different themes) is very powerful.
I felt the film did not live up to the title potential however, threw the basic meaning of it out the window in my opinion.
    Shame.
