Vesper is somewhat distant during the first meeting with Mathis but that could just be because the police arrive and put her on edge. This is all new for her, as a someone who works for the treasury.

She is playful again with Bond and his dinner jackets. She doesn't seem under the cosh at this stage. Le Chiffre and Mathis have yet to feature much yet, that should complicate matters.

The card game gets underway. Le Chiffre seems to immediately single Bond out as a threat, which suggests his has some intel outside of Quantum?

Bond orders his drink, and Le Chiffre becomes impatient. THIS IS A CRUCIAL MOMENT. Bond tells both Vesper and Mathis about the tell which he witnessed first on the previous hand of cards.

Nothing about the stairwell fight seems strange. Vesper reacts exactly as anyone would in that situation. This would be a great opportunity for her to come clean had she known anything. I think she must have been contacted quite soon before she was needed, with specific instructions.

I'VE JUST NOTICED SOMETHING OF NOTE. The shower scene could be viewed as an admission of guilt, or foreshadowing "there's blood on my hands and it's not coming off".

The next scene after the shower scene is the one where Le Chiffre tricks Bond with the tell. He obviously had to wait for a good hand (the two jacks) to put his plan into action. Only Vesper or Mathis could have told Le Chiffre about the tell, unless he figured it out himself and decided to use it to trick Bond.

Perhaps this is why Vesper refuses to give Bond more money. She sees a way that Quantum can get the money, and both Bond and Yusef can live. Only Bond ruins it when he gets the money from Leiter...

Yes, I think I understand better now. Vesper must have been helping Le Chiffre win because she wants both Bond and Yusef to survive. She is working with Quantum to save Yusef, and she is working with Le Chiffre to protect Bond. She is doing both seperately! That's what I think is happening.

Only Bond got the money from Leiter to continue, not part of the agreement between Vesper and Le Chiffre, so he lost patience and decided to have him killed with the poison. Vesper, unaware of this, saves Bond even though she could have left him to die. She genuinely cares for him!

I knew there was a reason for that defiberator sequence. Anyway, Bond survives the poison. The card game continues.

The deal between Le Chiffre and Vesper breaks down, the poison doesn't work, so Le Chiffre has to win fair and square. Lucky Bond has a straight flush up his sleeve.

Is the kidnapping staged? It's hard to tell. This is where things get difficult. Why would she cooperate if they were going to torture Bond?

She can't be acting to help Bond, but Quantum aren't supposed to know where they are, so she can't be acting for Yusef either. My guess is Le Chiffre just kidnapped her to attract Bond, disregarding their previous deal. He is desperate after all.

Why does Bond drink something that Mathis hands him, if he believes him to be a traitor?

The love dialogue between Vesper and Bond has always seemed a little cheesy to me. Do you think that maybe they made a point to make it obvious, as if too good to be true?

One question is, if Vesper is tasked with withdrawing the money, why does she wait for so long? Does she want to test the waters with Bond before she risks everything for Yusef? Perhaps she can forget about Yusef. As cruel as it sounds, she must have considered it.

Campbell loves a good beach scene. Bond tells Vesper of Mathis's duplicity. I think Bond telling her he loves her is enough to make her think that perhaps a happy life could be possible, but a part of her knows she is running away from her problems.

I'm pretty sure she is in love with Bond by the time she leaves for the bank. Whether she still loves Yusef is a different question. Hard to know what is motivating her here.

Even when the house is falling, she still holds onto the idea of a happy life. You can tell by the way she is panicked, she hasn't resigned herself to her fate yet.

Welp that's my thoughts on CR. I have to say, I'm not really any wiser as to what was going on. M says at the end that Vesper was working for the organisation behind Le Chiffre, and that made me think that Quantum and Le Chiffre were cooperating to win the poker game. But when Mister White says "money isn't as important in our organisation as knowing who to trust" that makes it sound like they would kill him if he had the money or not. Something still isn't adding up.

To be honest, one can only guess what happens when with Vesper.

One of the reason why CR now starts to slip in my ranking. I was puzzled when I saw it the first time (and so was everyone else for that matter) and I am still puzzled.
But once you have seen it many times it doesn't bother you anymore, it's just there.

I still think from the moment on that she gets kidnapped, things should have been shown clearer, so it all would make a bit more sense.

I think the mystery works more in its favor, just as it does with all we don't know in From Russia with Love. Not knowing the moment Vesper turns to Bond's side or when Tatiana begins to side with Bond more makes them infinitely more interesting as characters. Too much is shoved down our throats these days, so secrets are always nice when they don't undersell a character or story, which they don't in either case.

Also, because Vesper's betrayal had to be kept secret, we weren't given the honor to peek behind the veil and see the villains' plan form as we do in From Russia with Love.

I was tempted to put in a Bond movie tonight.
But I can't have this day connected to a Bond film, it just doesn't feel right...

The election results. It's depressing overall.

@BondJasonBond006, I was thinking of putting in Thunderball for the third night in a row, just to try and escape. This film has really given me the bug, but like you, I don't want it connected to my feelings on the past day or so.

The only Bond I could watch today is DAF while getting wrecked and hard watching Tiffy in that nice little nothing she's almost wearing. Damn Jill St John is so hot I can't hold back my blood flow...just thinking of her.
