Most of my friends preferred TND at the time. I was pretty disappointed in TND back in '97.

Both Connery and Moore I believe would have played that scene differently. They could display empathy in a more subtle fashion, and hence more effective.
I love that bit. To me, a good example of the cheesiness being enjoyable.
I remember the audience laughing. The bit with the cops being splashed also got a huge laugh.
