Imagine the film where we make the 009 chase the PTS, cut the Moneypenny scene, go right to the M scene to the Soviet War Room to the auction. We'll bring up more as we go, but at 100 minutes or os, this cold have been a perfect Bond film.

Great idea...this film is far too long. Mainly because of tacking on an extra finale.

Love this auction scene (North by Northwest is the granddaddy of auction scenes though!)

The Taj Mahal...not drawing much attention to yourself by arriving on a helicopter in the middle of the river. Don't like the Bond theme being played by Vijay. Although he's very likeable.

Hands the flute to Vijay and says 'you may need this to play with your asp' then smash cut to a shot of a woman's bottom.

So, titlewise for a film they haven't used: RISICO, THE HILDEBRAND RARITY, PROPERTY OF A LADY & 007 IN NEW YORK. Of those, the plots RC, POAL and 007INY have been, more or less, used in other hims. We get a villain and a few odds and ends from THR in LTK.

Plot-wise they haven't used MOONRAKER, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, A VIEW TO A KILL, QUANTUM OF SOLACE & THR.

Always thought they could have used the final third of TSWLM - but it might now feel like a bit of retread of the end of SF. I love QOS - such a harsh, Pinteresque story.

I could do without this casino scene. It all seems too obvious and simple to me.

I love it purely for Moore's no look at the dice. Totally cool.

Obviously going for the GF vibe with villain cheating at a game and henchmen crushing dice.

I'd recast Magda. I'd also cut out Octopussy's army raiding Kamal's fortress.

Yes to both - the ending is far too long. Magna has a strong presence in the first half of this film and should have been a stronger actress.

Love the music in the street fight scene - (think it's called 'Gobinda gets the knife' on the soundtrack?

Among my least favourite Q scenes. Desmond is really overplaying the annoyance, and my god...did that boobs 'gag' ever play? I know it's Porky's era...but that seems over the top and very un-Bondian. Between that, the goofiness of the Vijay tennis chase and Moore mugging in the opening as well as him oggling - I think this is my least favourite Moore performance (or maybe just how he was directed - allowed to indulge his joking side too much?)

Bond dinner and seduction is fairly classic Moore. The music helps it along. But Wayborn doesn't.

Intro of Octopussy of camera is a nice touch. But I feel like they don't use the character enough - she's very vanilla for a leading character who is supposed to control a smuggling empire. Wish she had a bit more edge.

My least favorite Moore performance is in MR. At least here he does have many great scenes (confronting Orlov, defusing the Bomb, for example).

He has a good middle third in this film (from OP's palace until defusing the bomb)

I like his performance in MR - his reaction to the centrifuge, banter with Goodhead, his interactions with Drax, fight with Chang.

Does it feel slightly odd story structure to go from meeting with kamal, to dinner with Magda to dinner with kamal and Magda? Maybe I'm over thinking that...this dinner and location the year before Temple of Doom is pretty interesting...

As a decent action director I don't think the jungle chase is one of John Glen's finer moments.

Maybe my vision is coloured by the awful tiger encounter...

Tarzan yell, hiss off and 'siiiiiit!' All in the space of two minutes...sheesh...

I'd cut the safari. What a mess. And I also don't care for Maude Adams in the role, I much preferred her in TMWTGG. I also wish that they had stuck more of the short story into the film. It could have saved us from all of the Oberhauser nonsense 32 years later.

Yes...I'd like to think they would take a little care with original Fleming material now and really form the basis of the film around it. Another reason I love TLD, it's kind of the starting point of the film and the mystery behind all the characters is wrapped up in that sequence.

It's a huge exposition dump to lay out the whole father backstory in literally the first few seconds of meeting. It also means that there isn't much question about which side she is on from the get go. Kind of undoes that interesting work of not showing her face earlier.

The yo-yo assassin has been hired. It's a great weapon...but pretty impractical - you'd need to be above someone all the time?!

I like the clown motif reemerging as Bond goes through Octopussy's desk.

But again the character of Octopussy is handled all wrong when she flies off the handle and falls into bed with Bond. Seems odd. Probably would have been best to have left their get together until the final scene.

The fight at OP's place is solid.

Onto Berlin, love a Cold War setting in Bond. Elevates any of the films.

I never was comfortable with M going all the way up to the border himself. Seems foolish.

Good point! I'd never considered that.

Looks like you guys are having a fun viewing to ring in 2019. I've got AVTAK on now so following your lead with the next film. I'm actually really digging the PTS apart from the awful Beach boys rip off soundtrack.

I just realised...For all its uniqueness I don't think they used India that well as a location. Never feels as lived in as some of the other locations they go to (Jamaica in DN, Turkey in FRWL, Nassau in TB)

I have grown to love that PTS, INCLUDING the faux Beach Boys.

Can't say I'm a fan...however, the music 'Snow Job' is brilliant. I adore the AVTAK soundtrack. One of my absolute favourites.

Roger Moore entering into chain kill mode with the soldiers. Head shots a-go-go!

This whole series of sequences from Orlov in the train until the bond defusing is top stuff.

The monkey suit is just plain stupid.

Oh yeah - that's ridiculous and unnecessary at this point when they've ramped up the drama and some brutal killings.

Gogol is great standing over Orlov as he dies.

Always think of that stuntman who was seriously injured during the train sequence. Think he had to have a pelvis reconstruction?! Smashed into a slab of concrete?

Mentioned it in another thread but Barry's late Bond career are the soundtracks I tend to always gravitate to, great stuff.

Love all the horse action in AVTAK. Tibbett and Bond banter is so great and something about horse breeding and selling just screams Bond. Zorins stables are truly magnificent.
