Bond wears his Omega loose. The band is flopping all over his wrist.
The outfit here wears during the climax is great, IMO. Very cool look for Bond.
I love the Xenia confrontation bit.
Yes, good comparison. Ogilvy was mentioned as a possible new Bond at one point. After FYEO, he and Oliver Tobias were mentioned as competing for the role. I thought they both were pretty bad candidates.
Saw an interview with Ogilvy awhile back when he talked about being considered for Bond. He was told he would have had a good shot if they had been looking for another Roger type. Instead they wanted another Sean. He also mentioned he felt he would have been too slight to play Bond.
I liked his incarnation of THE SAINT and might have liked him as Bond as well. He did a Diet Coke commercial as a Bondian character in the early '90's very similar to the ones Pierce did. I thought he looked quite dashing.
Watching Craig's first outing after seeing the Super Bowl NTTD trailer.
I'm at the bit where Bond loses to Le Chiffre before Felix steps up to the plate.
I can now say this film is back to being my favorite of the Craig era. I do hope the newest film captures the level of greatness this film has in spades.
I wonder how many hours per night the players spend at the Texas Hold Em table?
Seems like this game goes on well into the early morning hours.
Wright is an excellent Felix.
Excellent villain.
I recall reading the novel when I was a kid.
I must have devoured the whole book in less than a day. I was so riveted. I had been just getting into film noir having always loved the golden age of Hollywood, and I felt this Bond novel fit right into that dark world.
Here we go................Bond is captured. The famous torture scene. I suppose it wouldn't make sense to have Bond thrashed with a carpet beater in the film.
The chair is perfect. Great set design for the torture sequence.
I remember not long after this film came out SHOOT EM UP with Clive Owen was released. There was a scene or two in that film that displayed what he might have been like in this scene. Needless to say, Barbara chose the right man.
I'd love to see a fan edit of this scene that incorporates Sir Roger's OOOOORRRHHHHH.
I still feel this could be trimmed up a bit. Mostly effects shots.
I do wonder what kind of climax the new film will have?
I would have preferred Vesper to die as in the novel, but that might have been too grim. Or perhaps too dull for 2006 audiences?
Yes, the Bond girl drowning scenario was becoming a tradition for awhile.
So ends CR. Quite enjoyed this viewing. Been a slow Bond start for me this year. Only a handful of Bonds I have watched thus far. I believe at this point last year I must have gone through most of the series. Timing, convenience and life must take some of the blame.
This also marks my 10,000th post on these forums. Thank goodness for this thread...........and the Bond Meter.
I'm not optimistic that NTTD will reach anywhere near the heights of CR. I may have been if it was a 'standalone' Bond adventure, but this is tied too closely with SP to give me much hope.
It would've been amazing if they had gone with the actual ending from the book. Alas, it's too much to ask in a modern Bond film.
OCTOPUSSY
I should go back and count how many viewings of this film I've commented on.
Always loved the gunbarrel here and it's opening shot of Bond driving into the airbase.
Love Bond changing into his disguise. Already this is one of my favorite Roger's.
I had a thing for leather briefcases when i was a kid and loved Roger's gadget laden attache case in this film. Burgundy with gold trim. I saved up my allowance and bought one when I was in 5th grade. Mine was burgundy with black trim. I imagine anyone on these board could guess what I used as my combination latch number.
What ever happened to Tina Hudson?
If this film were made today, what color would it be? Teal, orange or piss filter yellow?
OP is an amazing looking Bond film, IMO. Natural, yet colorful.
It certainly was bright and colorful in the cinema.
009 gets his. Sorry to spoil that without the "spoiler" link. I forgot how to use it.
Great sequence, really. I believe ON THE TRACK OF 007 found this location not too long ago.
This Blu-ray is wonderful.
Bond meets Miss Smallbone and gives Moneypenny a hard time.
Had Bond forums and the internet existed in 1983 I'm sure there would be threads on Smallbone's future in the franchise.
Also there would be much discussion on Brown as M here.
I think he's an excellent M.
Here we go........the scene stealing over the top General Orlov.
I love this sequence.
Orlov is fashionably ahead of his time for 1983. Countless people I know have buzz cuts that look just like Orlov's.
Louis Jourdan is one of my favorite actors. made an excellent Count Dracula.
Smithers!
Bond is reamed out by the new M. Actually I'll retract: I'm of the opinion Brown isn't playing a new M.
Vijay is jammin' and taking requests. Can you play the Bond theme?
The audience laughed.
I love when a Bond film can seamlessly incorporate a casino sequence without it feeling obligatory or tacked on.
Might I add Sir Roger's reading of "Bond..........JAMES Bond" is as cool as you get.
Kamal Khan's haircut in the back always looked a bit odd to me. Like he has a tail.
Roger has a pompadour. Similar to his Simon Templar haircuts. Biggest difference to me is the lack of shine. Doesn't look like Brylcreem or pomade here. Possibly hair-sprayed into place.
Vijay is kicking a$$ with his tennis racket.
Smithers!
The Q scene is pretty funny I wish we'd get a Q scene like this again. Too much to ask for I suppose.
Always liked the Seiko Roger sports in this film.
Bond is goofing off, Q is getting pi$$ed and Vijay thinks it's funny.
Wonderful.
Although I had seen several Bond films prior to this, an ABC Movie Special airing of DR NO got me hooked on Bond. Afterwards I had to see OP immediately. My folks probably took me the following Saturday. I was quite enthralled and from here on I would never miss a Bond on the tube or in the cinema.
The other kids my age were into RETURN OF THE JEDI, which I also loved, but felt more excited for Bond. I was also getting into classic horror and monster films, particularly the Universal and Hammer horrors. I was pretty fortunate my folks let me stay up late to watch a Christopher Lee Dracula film or a Bond film (even if it were a school night).
Bond sneaking around the Monsoon Palace was one of the scenes that stood out to me in the cinema.
Bond is genuinely saddened by Vijay's demise. Sir Roger plays this scene beautifully.
The cut to Germany was jarring in the cinema as it went from the dark lighting of India to broad daylights
The shot of Magda thrashing her opponent is classic.
Bond sliding down the banister is funny, especially as he blasts away the end.
We could have gotten another OOOORRRHH! moment.
Magda likes Q.
Great ending, IMO.
Always loved this Bond and it hits the spot every time.
Remains in my top 10.
I still believe OP is Roger's best! Has so much to enjoy in it. Good characters, great action, memorable set pieces, and a genuinely exciting finale which most Bond movies don't have!
Agreed. I could watch that scene on a loop. This is where Sir Rog was such a versatile and underrated actor. He had brilliant comic timing and coud also play deadly serious very well.
It's great dialogue for that scene as well.
"Hilly! You ol' devil."
Yes. A small in-joke. I think he's got the melody a little off, though.
Amazing :D
We finally got it plowed........this morning. Better late than never.
Now I'm in the mood for a more tropical Bond film
DR NO
Here we go- the classic intro.
I always loved the casino set here.
Connery at his most cool. This film capture's Fleming's world perfectly, IMO -minus the bird guano.
The chap standing behind Connery is wearing a gray dinner jacket. Interesting. I wonder if Barry Nelson's dinner jacket was gray?
The original Major Boothroyd.
I really love this bit where Bond is issued the PPK. This scene really stood out to me as a kid and Connery looks great in the shoulder holster.
I also love Bond's flat with the pale green paint on it's walls.
And we cut to Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle. I love stock footage. Maybe Bond had a lay over and visited the 1962 World's fair before arriving in Kingston?
That would have been funny.
Now we're in Jamaica.
I always loved the Mr Jones sequence.
Bond gives him a proper thrashing.
He swings with his right and hits with his left. Like Willis Jackson in that DIFF'RENT STROKES episode with Terry Kiser.
Did Terence Young forget to remind him that only the top button is intended to be fastened? Connery breaks the rules.
Now it's time for a bath in the middle of the day.
I love the gray suit Bond changes into.
Bond meets Quarrel.
Quarrel gives Bond sh*t.
Great scene.
I like people who's friends of people.
Now Bond goes to the bar where his favorite song is playing.
Sung by Monty Norman himself.
I like Bond composers who sing their own songs.
Until GOLDENEYE that is.
