I had a chance to see this on the large screen an an AMC in 2012 (in the run-up to SF). And yes, given the limited budget, it really looks good.

Saw a 35mm print back in the '90s as part of a Connery Bondathon.

His use of shadows and perspective make it look a lot more grand than it really was --- which is very smart when you have a limited budget. Almost NOIR like.
