I thinkkk Warner has their own spy franchise with this one. It should fetch more than $300 Million globally.

And if spy film directors like Martin Campbell, Sam Mendes, Christopher McQuarrie and Paul Groengas are more comfortable.parable with the grittier directors of the 1960's like Terence Young and Peter Hunt.......
......Guy Ritchie may very well be the 'Guy Hamilton' of our days, simply adding popcorn fun and mild comedy to the spy franchise.

Guy Ritchie would be perfect for Bond anyway. Bond needs a director/writer who can realise his vision. The Nolan brothers would be another choice.

Guy Ritchie is completely wrong for Bond and Nolan has done nothing to convince me he can direct a Bond movie. Paying homage to Bond in a few scenes isn't validation of being capable of directing a whole Bond movie. I'd sooner see Alfonso Cuaron or Danny Boyle take on Bond than Ritchie and Nolan.

Can't see this going beyond a sequel, or two.

Although I have a different opinion about Nolan, I have to give it to you, your suggestions are spot on!

Alfonso Cuaròn is one of my favourite directors actually.
    Children Of Men
    Y tu mama también
    Great Expectations
    Gravity
and the Prisoner Of Azkaban (my favourite Harry Potter movie)
are all amongst my favourite movies.

Danny Boyle would work too I think, although I'm not a fan of his movies.
28 Days is the exception, I love that one.

    Cool!

Just because we differ on James Bond doesn't mean we are total opposites ;)

I enjoyed it, but it lacked a certain spark for me. Beautiful looking (and sounding) film with a good cast, but there just wasn't that same sense of satisfaction that was abundant in Sherlock Holmes.
The costuming is fantastic though and the cars are simply gorgeous.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate it?

    Lol, I like this quote :-P :
..."So yeah, if you ever wanted to see the James Bond of The Spy Who Loved Me teaming up with the James Bond of Skyfall, your wish has come true.".........."The Man from U.N.C.L.E. grabs those who love Moonraker and those who love Quantum of Solace in one affectionate embrace. It’s not a very deep film, and that’s even presuming my reading isn’t full of crap, but it is quite a bit of old-school gee-wiz fun.".......

oh dear, oh dear....now if Scott only have said "who love Moonraker...who love Casino Royale" instead of "who love Moonraker....who love Quantum Of Solace".

Clearly, a strong use of Goldsmith's original theme would not have hurt this effort....

I do want to see it. It looks stylish, fun, and seems to be well one. I'm not going to quibble over reviews; there are enough positive ones and it just appeals to me anyway. I grew up with Man from UNCLE and I like the looks of this.

A projected $20 million opening is really low for such a film. That's surprising, so I guess we'll see! I'll wait to see it once it hits DVD/blu-ray.

Hard to say. For what it is, it's pretty good. 7 out of 10.

Just watched it and loved it. Nice period piece, a lot of tongue-in-cheek dialogue, well paced.
    And
There will probabbly be a sequel. Just watch the end.

Or perhaps Warner becomes the new partner of the James Bond franchise. And then we get some funny cameo's between "UNCLE" and "007" :-P

  • @doubleonothing You wrote the Kingsman review for the main site, right? Out of interest, how would you say UNCLE compares with that film (and, if you've seen it, the new Mission Impossible film)?

I'll probably see it Saturday night. Not expecting anything amazing but it seems fun.

Them setting up a sequel doesn't mean there will probably be one, it all depends on how well it does.

The US tracking is poor and all 3 of NY city's major newspapers slammed it. Rolling Stone also. These 4 critics along with Variety and the Hollywood Reporter who also panned the film, are the big guns in the US. Given the poor tracking and major reviews, only non US countries can rescue this from failure, and I doubt that will happen.

I think Cavill, who keeps talking about possibly doing Bond in his interviews has made a bad judgement call. If Uncle were to be a hit (which is now unlikely) there would be sequels. EON would never hire an actor as Bond when the actor has two franchise commitments with one of them (Uncle) a near imitation of his Bond character. The other alternative for Uncle's outcome was that it would bomb. These major US reviews about Cavill are unflattering and their knocks (some of them a good deal rougher than just calling him a poor actor) will also undermine his chances at Bond. With either outcome, Cavill was going to kill his chances for Bond. What was he thinking? Actors with long term strong careers better be smart about what projects not to do.

I've just read the review in Spiegel (one of the major if not the major newspaper in the German-language region).
    A devastating review, eloquently written.

Personally I don't give a damn about reviews. Many of my favourite movies were ripped to pieces by critics.

That's true, good reviews and successful BO often don't correlate at all, but tracking by certain US sources have been very accurate, and that is what I've been watching.

Smitty, how come you seem to be so hard on Solo and Illya. Always seems like you WANT this reintroduction of Napoleon and Illya to fail. They have always been an interesting spy team. What's up, didn't you like the original series?

Yes, I'm being tough about it for a couple of reasons. I did see reruns of the TV show and thought it was good. I'm not a fan of Richie and I hope he never gets near Bond. He's very slick, but to me not a great director by a long shot. Bond has become so successful, EON can go for the best. Richie ain't the best. I also don't like the kind of stardom that Cahill represent so I don't want either of them doing a Bond. I like film stars with substance, so that when I see them interviewed, I can come away from the interviews not rolling my eyes because they are shallow or jerks or nuts. Film stars are so overpaid and over praised, I don't think it is asking much of them that they deliver skilled performances that are more than an inch deep and handle themselves intelligently during promotion. I think of someone like Tom Hanks who has never been a pretty boy, never tried for roles that play to that, and seems to almost always choose roles of substance carefully and is great fun to see interviewed.

Cavill comes from an apparently well off background but had no interest in drama school or College to develop his craft. He wants to be a big flashy movie star. He made a recent comment about if he is offered Bond, he had to see (in effect approve) the director and script first. I thought that was a pretentious remark coming from one with so limited a resume. So yes, I dislike the kind of actor he represents and am tough on him because I hope he never gets to play Bond. I think the next series of Bond films will be lighter and revert back to mission style stories, but I don't think it is unreasonable to expect to see a new Bond that has good looks, talent. charisma and intelligence. Bond should clearly project all of that. I'm sure there are those on the site that strongly disagree about Cavill, we all have opinions and different tastes, but I just think he would be a step way back and also doesn't have the edge to be a great Bond. He may be a very sweet guy, but sweetness isn't a Bond qualification for me.

I think there is also the matter of factual reporting here. The film is just tracking very badly, and I'm just noting that.

But who knows, Cavill over time could prove me wrong. I can change my opinion. I don't like Tom Cruise's personal life - but - and this is a big but, I respect his film smarts. He is THE architect of his career, choosing his directors, obviously exerting great control over scripts and casting. I respect those kinds of smarts. He has the brains, discipline and tenacity to produce some very good films. I wish he'd do more non action roles and develop some of the considerable acting talent he showed in his early dramas, but he does make some smart action films like the current MI5 and Edge of Tomorrow. I thought MI5 was terrific. So I can change my mind. :)
