Incidentally, I'm sad that they have canceled the Batman '66 comic after issue 30.
Thoughts:
the film is beautifully conceived, in terms of cinematography and mood. It really does take you back in time, and they capture a sort of 60's classiness very well. Similar to Bridge of Spies which also took us back behind the curtain last year.
The plot is average - nothing to write home about. One feels it's there just to establish the characters and set things up for future adventures. Having said that, it's not bad either.
The acting is where I have some concerns. Sure everyone does their bit, and Cavill in particular is as good as can be settling into the big shoes left by Vaughn. I think he does a much better job of it than Hammer, who truly pales in comparison to McCallum as far as I'm concerned. However, even he isn't as bad as I've seen him in other films, which is saying something. The issue for me though is that everyone does actually seem like they're acting and role playing. I didn't for once feel that they were inhabiting the roles, just playing them, if that makes sense. There is a difference, and it's subtle, but I felt it.
All in all this is a reasonably entertaining period thriller/actioner. I think the earlier parts (primarily focusing on Solo behind the Iron Curtain) are better than the later parts.
It's not a patch on the tv series, but I hope they make a sequel and take it back to NYC high society, where it could really come alive.
I'm not sure if that is still as true now as it was in the Moore years though.
Kudos is Cavill because he is great in it. Agreed.
Also agreed. He really surprised me. I didn't think he could pull off this type of role - when his name was mentioned for Bond I thought he was far too wooden, but he did a great job as Solo so I guess I was wrong!
Agreed.
Tht's only fair, saw it again yesterday whilest flying home. Even on a very small screen it works very well (inflight entertainment) and that score is just wonderful.
For the curious, this is a black and white copy of a broadcast originally in color.
This was from the preceding week's broadcast:
