James Bond Songs: The studio/album mix vs. The film version [Score "TSWLM" Complete & Sequenced]

I have not only an eye for detail, but also an 'ear' for details ;-). Hence why I would like to discuss the subtle differences in studio/album versions of Bond songs (and tracks), and the actual film mix. And let's be honest guys and girls, there are differences. Just have a listen:

--> John Barry's main title theme for "From Russia With Love":
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPm9

FILM VERSION (This version includes the rather 'groovy' electric organ, used for the first time in a Bond film, but absent on on the album version):
http://picosong.com/HP4B

--> Shirley Bassey's disco version of "Moonraker", used in the end titles:
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPgz

FILM VERSION (3min 40sec and onwards, there's a bit more scratching in it, and it has slightly more 'beat'. I think I prefer this one):
http://picosong.com/HP4n , &
http://picosong.com/HPmR

--> KD Lang with "Surrender", used in the end titles of "Tomorrow Never Dies":
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPg5

FILM VERSION (Same Ms Lang, but she did a different recording for the film version. Even the mix is slightly more 'electronic roars'. This one sounds richer):
http://picosong.com/HPLX

--> Garbage with "The World Is Not Enough", the main title song:
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPjC

FILM VERSION (Obviously more 'touched up' with richer orchestration, more horns, and strings in certain climatic key changes. I prefer this one!):
http://picosong.com/HP5r

--> Chris Cornell with "You Know My Name", the main title song to "Casino Royale":
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPXp

FILM VERSION (Again, more 'touched up' with richer orchestration, more horns, and strings in certain climatic key changes. So much better.):
http://picosong.com/HP2Z

--> Adele with "Skyfall", the main title song:
STUDIO/ALBUM VERSION:
http://picosong.com/HPXw

FILM VERSION (The actual film edit, but it appeared on the official 'bootleg' edited screener that was sent to the members of the Academy Awards who were voting in the category 'Best Score' and 'Best Song'):
http://picosong.com/HPVf

If anyone else heard some differences between music from the studio recordings for the LP or CD albums and the actual film versions? Please post it in here :-). Use picosong if you can't find the extracts or music pieces on YouTube :-).

I always preferred the film versions. Where the album version digressed, it always felt like a failed mixture of film music and pop song, at least in comparison to the film version.
The Moonraker album version I think comes closest to the film version.

I like the film versions the best with the exception of Skyfall, I prefer the full song with that one.
  • I just adore this slightly more groovy film version of 'Moonraker Disco' :-)

I remember both Dalton Bond main titles are shortened considerably in the films than on the albums, especially LTK. I prefer the album version on that one.

GoldenEye is also quite different on the album than in the film. Tomorrow Never Dies omits the bridge in the film version.

True, but on the whole these songs (also 'GoldenEye', 'A View To A Kill' and 'The Living Daylights') were merely cut at the start and the end of the song. The general mix/version stayed the same, or wasn't mixed differently with new orchestrations or electronic samples.

That is the case however in the themes and songs in this opening post of this topic.

A lot of the songs are just edited and shortened from the album versions. This generally makes them worse.

The LTK edit, cutting out the first verse (rather than the second) is a bit odd.

Goldeneye on the album carries on to a long instrumental and fade out, but the film and single version has the dramatic finish which is much better. However the fade out version of Nobody Does It Better would be my choice over the sudden end in the movie.

Die Another Day album version was played on the radio too sometimes.

    Album version is 4.39
Single who claimd to be Radio version is 3.27

Album version wil be mabey even/not much difrence as videoclip.

In this video clip Radio version stops at 3.45.

Single version of Writing on the wall is 4.39 too whyle there are two radio editions i believe. Both be around 3.30 i think, but first version was very bad. Writing on the Wall don't have album version like Skyfall from Adele. The Writing on the wall on the soundtrack is 2.10 version of the instrumental version who is avaible on single as second track, that version is 4.39. Text information on the front cover of soundtrack of Spectre is misleading, because it sugest you get instrumental version of writing on the wall of Sam Smith song who is 4.39 not 2.10. But iam happy with that alternate track, because the 4.39 is already avaible with single and if alternate cut of 2.10 be used in movie i am even more happy with it.

I like them both and love this thread!

Well, I'm predominantly interested in real differences between two versions: Mix-wise, instrumental wise, orchestration-wise, etc. Simply a running time cut doesn't do it for me :-).

Well, that's why I love this thread. What little differences there are is fascinating. Harder instrument sounds, louder vocals, etc.

Casino Royale has the most song mixes. The film version is the superior mix.

Absolutely love the film version of YKMN, but then I listen to Cornell's album version and it gives me a huge mehhh-feeling. What big orchestra's can do is clear here :-).

  • PS: All the above versions are downloadable :-P.
  • Just rewatched TSWLM......and obviously the end titles song of the film is a different recording than the main titles song.

The film version of YKMN is so much stronger.

I hope they give the ballads a rest for the next film and do something with a bit more bite.

The film version of SPECTRE ending credits is slightly different than the one on the soundtrack album.

Also I believe the film version of Breadcrumbs has a different start than the one on the album.

I made a better version of the "Moonraker" End Titles (Film Version). Now without the background voices, and slightly louder:
    http://picosong.com/vSpF/

Also now, the film version of the End Titles of "Nobody Does It Better", now with the wonderful cheesy male choir at the start:
    http://picosong.com/vSi6/

And the better film version of the opening titles from "From Russia With Love", with nicer edited fade-out, a bit louder and off course the wonderful tacky organ included:
    http://picosong.com/vSM3/

They are all free to download as well via these links :-).

    I certainly enjoyed them. :)
  • I worked this weekend on sequencing the entire score from "The Spy Who Loved Me", since the original album is an entire mess. Almost 70% of that music is not featured in the actual recordings that were used for the film. Which is a bloody shame, because the film recordings are actually wonderful. And one understands why Marvin Hamlisch received an Oscar nomination for his score. So here's the list of how I sequenced the score, and after that the tracks that I edited from BluRay into .mp3.

It was quite difficult to delete the actual spoken voices, but I managed with my editing programs. The ones that were impossible to properly put into an .mp3 (too much quality loss), I did in other ways. For instance for parts of the car chase I used the "Bond 77", but I re-edited it and sped it up a bit, like in the movie. So you can download the re-edited tracks here with proper chronological sequence added to it. As well as titles. You won't find these tracks on any album, so please download them asap, as the tracks don;t stay online on Picosong that long:
