Happy 20th anniversary, TWINE. That's the best I can say as you're still at the bottom of my list. I'm saving the real celebrations for the other films celebrating anniversaries this year.

That film knew exactly where to huuuuurt me.

    :D

FYEO is down there for me, too. A collection of stunts with a story hanging on it as a reaction to the excesses of MR.

    For your eyes only.

Its the Bond film equivalent of watching paint dry. The warehouse raid is the only part that I like.

A top four film for me…

When I was younger FYEO used to bore me, but for a while now I’ve loved it and consider it to include Moore’s best Bond performance. Melina is one of my favorite Bond girls too.

For quite sometime I rated FYEO as the best Bond movie of the Moore era. I'm not entirely sure these days, but most of the time I think it still appeals to me more than TSWLM overall. The big third contender for that title (best Moore entry), I must admit, has grown to be MR. At least the lower tier of Moore films, with LALD (which I love) separating the two, are TMWTGG, OP and AVTAK (the last two about on the same level):

At any rate, none of these is a candidate for "Worst Bond Movie". That honour is left to either TWINE or DAD. In my case the latter.

Exactly my sentiments. Little me in my single digits had no idea what the hell was going on, who the bad guy was and why we weren't fighting big armies like in TSWLM for example.

Several years later, I saw the light. It's a truly good film, mature and down-to-Earth, but with cool action, a believable plot and a Moore-who-means-business. FYEO now ranks pretty high on my list.

MR is my least favourite one. I hate space action and especially the sound of laser pistols. Pew pew. 40 minutes of pain. Ken Adam created great settings and the first 80 minutes are sometimes a bit silly but always entertaining.
Other candidates for the weakest Bond films: DAD and DAF.
I love FYEO by the way. Such great action pieces, especially the chases and the most thrilling scene of the Moore era: the climbing scene.

I recently watched Moonraker and though I still find it often too ridiculous for words, it has its moments. I recently finished listening to the Moonraker audiobook and the big huge waste of the movie is that it is nothing like the book, which is fantastic. A real shame.
AVTAK is so often embarrassing but it doesn't make my IQ tumble as I watch it. Therefore the answer to the question what is the worst Bond movie is and will likely always be

FYEO never really seems to take off for me unfortunately. It’s never horrible or something and it has some fine moments but in the end it is utterly unexceptional.

I agree that MR has some terrific moments, which is why it doesn't quite click with me. There are some very serious/suspenseful moments in that film that are buried in a wave of silliness.

I do wonder how that sound travels through space. If there is air there, why the breathing apparatus?

Yes, it's a common mistake in the genre. Suspension of disbelief...

FYEO used to be my favourite Moore Bond film. But OP has overtaken it, as has LALD.
But there is still a lot to enjoy in it!

FYEO is my favorite Moore Bond film. TSWLM is close, but I appreciate FYEO for being more down to earth. I'm not going to stand here and say that it's a fantastic film - to me, none of Roger's are - but it's low key enjoyable.

But Cubby said MR is based on science fact, not fiction. That's why it works,

The one thing I’ve learned in watching these movies is to leave my engineer’s hat at home.

For example, in YOLT it appears that SPECTRE and the “unnamed Asian power” have not just designed, but perfected the operations of a near single stage to orbit launch (SSTO) vehicle. Given that this has long been the holy grail of space flight, it would have been more lucrative for SPECTRE to simply sell the rights to this design than starting a US-Soviet war.

Die Another Day. Bond for mouth breathers. I utterly detest that film. The nadir of the series. How that CGI got on the screen boggles the mind.

But then they wouldn't have been able to live up to some of their core values. Like how would you extort and provide terror if you don't attempt to inaugurate a little war. Also the capital put into the volcano fortress needed a big payoff.

The nadir of the series? hmmm not sure I agree with that. The CGI was a new technology at the time. I remember seeing it and people laughed in the theatre but I don't think it was the effects I think it was the sheer suspension of disbelief of someone taking the hood of the vehicle and using that as his surf board. Then taking the parachute and using that as a glider. I recall the audience laughing at AVTAK when Bond snowboards to the Beach Boys song.

DAD came out in 2002. This was the same year that The Two Towers was released. CGI was NOT a new technology at the time. Realistic computer visual effects have been around since at least The Abyss which was released in 1989. And yes, the AVTAK snowboard scene is laughable and so is almost every scene in DAD not just the CGI wave surfing. God damn. Absolutely the nadir.

Didn’t Tamahori insist on the Tsunami escape scene being added in. It wasn’t in the script. I remember in one of the documentaries that they seemed really satisfied with the effects of Bond parasurfing. Well they do say DAD knew what it wanted to be.

I only read in Some kind of hero that Tamahori thought that it could be done totally with CGI and he said afterwords that he is to blame for that sequence.

The CGI was spectacularly bad, even for the year. The producers are ultimately to blame for its inclusion; the buck stops with them. Saying that, it brought about a rethink and we got Casino Royale. Maybe it was for the best. We went from the nadir of the series to the pinnacle of the series. Plus, it's not just the bad CGI. That film is like a greatest hits compilation that doesn't have its own voice, the editing is like something from an MTV video, the dialogue is laughable, the theme tune is dire, and it basically feels like a knock-off xXx.

I guess your opinion is the only one that is correct? Why the need for CAPS and swear words? I am sorry that I don't feel the same as you.

CGI was new technology in the films. I apologize if new doesn't mean within 10 years of development. What word should I have used? Old? Classic? I felt it was still not commonplace for films to use them.

DAD has some really good bits in it. Even the plot is pretty topical. Is it OTT? For sure. I don't share your view that it's the nadir of the series. If you wanted my opinion it's TMWTGG that is the nadir of the series. Although I love the film it feels small and not very inventive. The series almost died from the results of this film. DAD wasn't going to kill the series. It had huge box office and was quite a financial success.

SP, no question. Nothing comes close, including the two unofficial CR adaptations and NSNA.

Thedove, don’t be sorry for liking DAD. I don’t care if you do. I apologize for venting about it. You might (or might not) have vented about SP before in a similar fashion. I love Spectre and everybody rips on it. Let them.

CGI wasn’t new in 2002. I remember we weren’t as used to it in movies as we are now, but after movies like T2, Jurassic Park, Titanic, The Phantom Menace and Fellowship of the Ring, people were accustomed to it in 2002.

Anyway I agree with you on the low quality of TMWTGG and that DAD wasn’t going to kill the series. Even still, I’m glad the very next entry after it revitalized the series for me.

I almost always rank DAD last, but SP is certainly my least watched film in the series. I'm hardly ever in the mood for it, and when I am, that feeling dies as soon as I get to the "Dead Are Alive" caption.

I hope NTTD improves upon the SP, and as dearly I want the film be be up there with OHMSS, it's a tall order.

I just hope NTTD doesn't end up being the film I rank last for decades to come.

I still love every Bond film and would take the worst entry over pretty much any franchise film made today.

I like both DAD and SP more than IRON MAN, THE DARK KNIGHT, WONDER WOMAN, etc.
