    I'm hell bent on efficiency, laddie, and this thread's purpose was more than met, and other inquiries can go in the James Bond Questions thread where this query should have been posted originally (though I concede you may not have known of that thread's existence). This thread would have been threatened with a close if I or @jake24 or any other member had posted it, so don't feel like you're the center of some grand conspiracy of censorship. I wish the mods were that devilish; it'd make for some interesting times.

    JW was supposed to be endearing? I thought he was supposed to be a comic foil.

    Of course, but you can almost hear LALD and TMWTGG saying, "Oh, just look at him, isn't he funny? Yeah, he's saying some bad things, but he's the lovable kind of racist!" He's like the racist grandfather or uncle you have that you can't fully hate because you remember all the good memories you've shared when you were younger, and every time you complain to your mother about them mentioning the "goddamn Japs" she tells you to stuff it. We've all been there.

    I have no problem with Pepper being some kind of racist stereotype or they're going for some cheap laughs - it's just that none of it is funny. That's the cardinal sin for me. Then again - I don't laugh at Tarzan calls or Barbara Wodehouse imitations or Jaws flapping his arms or double-taking pigeons. But something like Moore holding the fish out the window in TSWLM I can appreciate because of its absurdist humour rather than slapstick (and slapstick can be done well - such as a Marx Brothers or Buster Keaton.)

    I am indifferent on Pepper, just one of those characters. I don't care much about the racist thing, as there is all sorts of people and fiction should be allowed to portray those gradations in character, but at times it's a bit much and more than any other offense he's annoying. I like most of LALD, but he is a reason why I wouldn't return to it more than I had to.

    J.W. Pepper invented Pepper Spray when he accidentally squeezed Hot pepper juice in Chula's eyes. Just like he invented the Car boat. =))
