Is there an age limit on Bond? How old is too old?

If a man stays in shape, and I mean health and not bodybuilding, there is no reason he shouldn´t be able to shoot sharp well into his 50s. Everything else is a wrong example to young people.

I rather a fit looking Bond in his 50's than a baby faced Bond in his 20's.

50 to 55, depending on the actor; there are some who look too old at 40.

I agree, how someone looks is probably more important than the actual age.

50 is probably the limit, maybe 52-54 depending on how they age. They shouldn't be younger than the early 30's either.

35 is the youngest a Bond actor should be. 55 the oldest, unless they've aged extremely well.

Interesting that we're discussing the same sort of thing with Indy right now!
To be honest, Roger Moore could have kept going for a couple more if he only played his age. Nothing wrong with an older character- looks at Dark Knight Returns, that's one of the best Batman books out there!

Typically I figure early to mid fifties isa good time to consider hanging up the PPK, unless we've got someone really special.

Depends on the actor. IMO, Moore actually looked better in 1987's Happy Anniversary 007 than he did in AVTAK. I still say Bond should look experienced. Most 30 something actors today don't have the lived in rugged look Sean had at 31 in DR NO. Bond should kind of be ageless -so one couldn't really pinpoint a specific age for him at first glance.

    Couldn´t agree more.

I think Pierce Still looked great in Die another day and i think could have handled another one.

The age is not much of a problem with action. Liam Neeson became an action star in his mid 50s with Taken and everyone accepted him in these kind of roles.

The Issue here is how good an actor looks to seduce the ladies and how belivable he still is to play the ladies man Bond.

The problem with Moore in a View to kill wasn't the action but that he looked like a grandpa kissing a 23 or 24 year old girl.

If the Bond actor still looks hot he can play Bond maybe till the age of 52 or 53

The age thing isn't really all that relevant in my view. It all depends on the actor.

Some can look better for longer and others can't. Mobility is important as well, so as long as they can look convincing in the fights and when running etc. I'm ok with older actors.

The max age is probably 50 or thereabouts for an average actor, but in the case of someone youthful looking, it can be a few years older imho.

Cary Grant (if he had the role - watch Charade for evidence) or even Sean Connery could have gone easily into their mid 50's or even longer.

I'm 56 and as a former stunt man I could still do rigorous fight scenes.
As long as I got massages from pretty young professionals in between takes...

Cary Grant never aged. He is like Tom Cruise, time has no affect on men like that.

Dan is looking old nowadays. The next film should be his swansong. It'll be the last time he will look convincing seducing a young woman and jumping from explosions.

I'd say around 50. Older it is stretching credibility. Ideally, with the 3 years gap we now have between films, Bond should be cast in his early 30s, but I understand finding an actor with the acting chops at that age might be difficult.

Frank Grillo will be 51 this year and is in great shape and looks late 30s/early 40s because he takes care of himself. Craig could easily do another film but if it's a case of the physicality being too much for him then he should go and not risk further injuries to himself and wish him all the best in his career. On the flip side, he doesn't have to be jumping around rooftops and doing all sorts of crazy stuff he puts himself through. Just give him a few good fist fights and scenes that involve shooting people and let the stuntmen do all the crazy shit.

Personally, I think this whole physically demanding stuff is overplayed and quote annoying actually. Craig is being paid millions to not just get into shape but for the role too and some of the complaints and whining I've heard regarding the physical demands are a bit if a joke. There are actors who do more than he does, work harder physically and put out more work too, don't get paid as much and they never complain and yet always deliver.

I love Craig as Bond and would love to see him back for one more but the guy needs to shut up and get on with things and let the experts do their jobs and him stick to acting and close ups if we have to see him in the thick of the action. Sorry, but I feel no sympathy or remourse for the guy who gets paid overly generously for a job he should be more judicial about when it comes to the logistics of realising the character on screen. If he cant handle things then he should just leave and let's get someone else willing to do the job.

Ok, so Sir Rog was classed as too old when he came to do AVTAK and, to a certain extent, OP, but, for me, he managed admirably, despite the quite obvious stuntman/men that appeared in AVTAK. As long as an actor keeps himself in good shape there is no reason to carry on until his late 50's.

Dalton's last Bond was in 1989, and at the DAD premiere in 2002, he appeared not to have aged a single day.

Wether or not he looks hot is mostly up to the marketing. When Craig was announced as Bond most people said he´s ugly. A few years later he was one of the sexiest men on the planet.

Well put. Goes to show how people like to get cheated. Brosnan got criticised for having not enough muscles in GE, which may or may not be justified. But Craig does mostly bodybuilding. Bodybuilding has nothing to do with acrobatic skills. Look at what Chow Yun Fat did in the 90s, he learned lots of choreographies, and he looks amazing in John Woo´s many slo mos. Yet he doesn´t look muscular at all. Bond should be a martial artist, not a martial worker.

Surely, its all about context. There is potential for a more mature Bond and, as we saw in SF, putting age as a them can work. If the script embraces the age issue, then 55 is OK IMHO. But they cant ignore the issue and have a 50 year old prancing around like a 30 year old, that simply can't work.
