Parsons Green bomb 'several times bigger than Manchester Arena device and could have decimated entire tube carriage if it had gone off properly'.
The Parsons Green tube bomb was several times the size of the device used in the Manchester Arena attack and could have caused 'devastation' if it had detonated as intended, according to a chemical weapons expert.
Twenty-two people have been injured after the device exploded on an underground train in south London this morning at rush hour.
The explosion is believed to have been caused by a home-made device contained in a large white tub and wrapped in a Lidl carrier bag.
It is believed that the improvised explosive device did not detonate properly.
Twenty two people died and around 120 were injured after an explosion tore through the crowd at an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena on May 22 2017.
Hamish De Bretton-Gordon, the Ministry of Defence's former Assistant Director of Intelligence Surveillance, said the size of the device is alarming as it was several times bigger than that used in the Manchester Bomb attack.
"It looks like a pretty unsophisticated device and I think we have been pretty fortunate as it doesn't seem to have detonated as intended," said de Bretton-Gordon.
"There was a quite a big bucket, it looks like it could contain 20 litres. That can carry a lot of explosives. That size of device could have been devastating.
"Just 1kg of TAPT - a jihadi favourite for explosives which is found in ammonium nitrate - causes so much damage. If it had contained that it would have decimated the carriage."
There will be some sort of detonator, some sort of propellant.
"It appears not to have gone off. It might have been a device to catch fire, there's a lot of clothing and material in there, maybe it's soaked in something that would catch fire.
"Probably they were hoping the train would be underground by then," he added, because the fire and explosion would have been more devastating in an enclosed space.
De Bretton-Gordon draws some similarities with ISIS tactics in the time and location of the attack, but said the lack of sophistication and lack of a a suicide bomber departs from the norm for the terror groups.
It's classic jihadi tactics," he says.
"It's peak time, a time to create maximum terror and injuries.
"It was the right time, the right target. This is exactly what they are told to do.
"But they haven't executed it very well. It must have had an ISIS inspiration. But if it's an ISIS attempt I can see the hierarchy being pretty cross it didn't detonate.
I've seen a lot of improvised explosive devices in Iraq by jihadis. It doesn't have a textbook jihadi or ISIS look.
"But then, all the jihadi lone wolves and fighters in this country are being told to create mayhem and kill people."
Witnesses reported a "fireball flew down a carriage" when a white 'builder's DIY type' tub or bucket in a Lidl bag 'with wires coming out of it' exploded filling a rear train with smoke at Parsons Green Station .
Several passengers suffered burns to their faces and bodies among other injuries believed to have been suffered as panicked commuters rushed to get out of the packed train onto a busy platform this morning.
There was a "stampede" to get out of the station into nearby Fulham Road - causing a 'crush' with people worried there was a 'bomb'.

Still, never mind eh? As is sure to be explained here and elsewhere, let's just keep calm and carry on. Any disruption and perhaps fatalities are just a minor setback in the wonderful social experiment of which we are part.

It's quite obviously a faulty device, of that there can be little question. All he could do was abort. Unless he's caught, and caught quickly, he will try again.

It's important to remember that the vast majority of Lidl customers are peace loving. This was an extremist following his own warped version of Lidlism.

15 September, 21:00 - Statement from the Mayor on national terror threat level being raised to ‘critical’:
'The national threat level has now been raised to 'critical' after the evil and cowardly terrorist attack at Parsons Green. As the Prime Minister has said, this is our highest level of security preparedness.
I utterly condemn the hideous individuals who target innocent people and attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life.
Please remain vigilant. If anybody knows anything at all about who might be responsible for this attack, they should contact the police immediately. The Anti-Terrorist Hotline is 0800 789 321.
Everything possible is being done to protect our city and keep us all safe, both Londoners and visitors to the capital. I attended the COBRA security meeting this afternoon and am in contact with the Metropolitan Police and other emergency services who are leading the response and investigation.
Rest assured the full resources of our police and security services are being deployed to track down those responsible. They will be caught and brought to justice.
Tonight and this weekend there will be additional police officers – including armed officers – on our streets to keep us safe. There will also be some military personnel deployed to guard sensitive sites which are closed to the public.
Meanwhile, on our transport network, extra staff will be on duty and visible.
London stands together today as always. We will never let those who seek to divide us win – we will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism.'

With such experts, who needs enemies? Very intelligent, scaring the people like that and at the menatime tell the ****** that did this and is still on the losoe he's actually on to something! Next time, just say it looks impressive but they got all the chemicals wrong anyway.

Can someone explain why after 24hrs they haven't released and CCTV images or mugshots yet of the most wanted bloke in the country?
You're not telling me that TfL and the BTP didn't pull some footage of him carrying the bomb within a few hours.
Possibly because they are closing in on him (I'm guessing he is known to the authorities).

I am refusing to watch the news, and don't buy papers, but I'm guessing they are still spewing out exactly the same stuff as they did yesterday.

After other attacks, we have seen a pattern where the police make many arrests and later go on the release without charge.
Having said that, it may be just co-incedence but arrested in Dover could indicate it was a "bottle job" and he tried to get out of the country ASAP. Border control at Dover would be the last place to head towards IMHO
One thing that people fail to see is that it is not only the Muslims who can become radicalised. How long before we see the indigenous population turn to the far right for a solution? After all if they see that the current leadership is doing nothing to protect them then they will turn to someone who they feel will? The arrest of the soldiers the other week confirms that far right groups are out there, IMHO if this current terrorist situation is allowed to continue on the same trajectory, then we will see a result that no-one wants.
In the medium term, if the current crop of politicans fail to deal with this, then it opens the door to the extreme right.

And yet people called him weak for not being a warmonger (preferring not to entertain a hypothetical scenario about having to use nuclear weapons and preferring instead to focus on what can be done in the here and now towards nuclear disarmament = "WHAT A PUSSY HE'S GOING TO GET US ALL KILLED") and instead we're still sucking up to the Saudis and have a leader who refuses to publish a report that could implicate them for fear that it'd ruin their arms deals. Funny that. But not as funny as him being accused of being a terrorist sympathizer for attempting to talk to the IRA in the 80s (how did the troubles come to an end again? Oh yeah the peace talks) and instead we now have a leader who was that desperate to cling onto power she made a deal with the DUP.
