Police have stormed the supermarket and shot the gunman apparently, according to BBC News.

Gotta give it to the French police: they're a ruthless bunch when they need to be.

The UK could learn something from them, were it not for all the masses of regulations on police firing weapons here.

They have their regulations (and they should), I think it's more a question of attitude. Caricatures depict French soldiers as surrendering experts and the police as Clouzot, but in both cases they're not nice people.

Well, a gendarme who had exchanged himself to save a hostage has died from his wounds.

Heroism at its finest. Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame... remember that name.

Just found out that a French police officer exchanged himself for the last civilian and left his mobile phone on so the French forces outside could hear what was happening and then knew when to storm the building x he died though by that cowardly Muslim.

By the way chaps I see specialist armed cops everyday on the underground and in the streets of London with machine guns, pistols and even more weapons, and these men/women would kill you in a heartbeat so don’t think we are walking around just with a truncheon anymore.
If I had to choose then I would put my life in the hands of a British officer over any other, and I’m not just saying that because I’m English.

I believe the term "hero" is incredibly overused anymore, but it's more than applicable for that French police officer. Good on him stepping in to a situation he most likely knew he wouldn't walk away from.

Well, technically, he was a french military officer. The gendarmerie is part of the military in France. But the sentiment is appreciated.

Duly noted. I had seen him noted as "police officer" everywhere else. Doesn't take away from the sheer, gigantic balls it took to do something like that.

    Hear, hear.

A posthumous Légion d'honneur medal seems the very minimum he should get.

This brave and selfless act just goes to highlight the pathetic cowardice of ISIS and also why they will never win.

As one who treats the usual drivel about 'not allowing the terrorists to divide us and their attacks only making us stronger' spouted by the likes of Sadiq Khan with extreme cynicism, this is one terrorist attack that has done exactly that. Through his courage one man has inspired us to stand fast and remain united in the face of such evil.

RIP Lt Col Beltrame - not just a great and patriotic Frenchman but an example to us all of the values that separate us from the vermin that peddle hate and murder.

Police said the driver killed himself, too.

True there's no evidence yet so there's every chance it could be a Bhuddist or a Quaker.

The police has already said it s a terror attack. How usual is that? It can t have anything to do with islam, can it? Must be those violent movie clips on Youtube or video games that caused it.
  • I note that this thread neglected to mention the shooting at Youtube HQ a few days back. Clearly THAT had something to do with the terrible clips on YT....

Latest news: The guy who "did" Münster was a German(-born) citizen known to have had mental problems. Let's wait for further clarification before bashing adherents of whatever religion, please. Or politicians who allowed refugees in.

All the nutters are getting behind the wheel of a truck/van etc and just getting their moment of fame or revenge.

At the least capital punishment needs to be brought back for certain crimes...this being one of them.

Object to capital punishment for ANY crime...especially if the perp is a nutter. Capital punishment is a complete no-no and has been proven not to deter anyone anyhow. You may think about it in the UK once you brexited the EU, but until then, forget about it.
