You won't get to TSWLM for a while yet, you're pretty safe.

That’s good. I figured if I have the free time and I end up blazing through them like I did with CR I should stay a few steps ahead. I’ll probably just get the last two next Wednesday when I’m paid. I’ve been good about avoiding superfluous purchases lately, but I had to make an exception for these.

You're in for a real treat.

Up to the short stories now after TB, I think the opening to From A View To A Kill would make for a simple Bond-less PTS.

Yes, I’ve thought that too. Same with the mission flashbacks in QOS and TSWLM.

Yes, some good ideas there for sure. Come to think of it, we've not had a Bondless PTS since TMWTGG. I'm not sure that they'd be brave enough to do that nowadays.

From A View To A Kill - I love how Bond accepts that the mission is essentially a big waste of time halfway through, and notes that he's mainly sticking around a few more days just to have sex with Mary Ann. What a genius.

You have FYEO next; the best use of M to date.

Looking forward to it. Currently, I'd say my favorite sequence with M would be the Blades chapters in MR.

That made me laugh out loud. He's much more fallible in the books and I like him more for it.

Yes, agreed, and it's probably a good deal closer to the mundanity of real Intelligence work than some of Bond's more fanciful adventures as reported in the novels.

The novels are great at showing how monotonous and mundane things can get for Bond when he's not on the job, whereas the films make it seem like he's jetting around the globe all of the time.

I’m going to start LALD in the next day or so. Just been so busy with stuff lately I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I don't know if you're doing the whole thing this time @Agent_99 .

Afraid not - got lots of other things on my reading list at the moment! Just barging in when someone jogs my memory and I have something to say.

I'm nearly wrapped up OP/TLD, I'll probably wait a couple days to start the next to give you lot time to finish TB.

Got to read the first 3 chapters of LALD. Definitely an intriguing start. The voodoo stuff is an interesting touch. I certainly feel the danger already!

That novel is filled with danger and foes at every turn. It's one of my favorites, much like its film counterpart.

Got to sneak in a couple more chapters tonight. Haven't had a lot of time lately but I'm hopeful I can finish the novel by the end of next week or sooner. It's a very promising start; I particularly love the way Mr. Big is kept in the shadows so far and shown to be very feared and powerful.

Relax, man. Mr Big's gonna take care of you.

When Fleming describes Bond's Bentley in TB he says that the hood/bonnet is topped by a silver bolt instead of Bentley's usual 'Flying B'. What on Earth is a silver bolt?

I loved OP and I thought TLD was fairly good, despite coming to a rather abrupt end. I've still not wrapped up the last two, despite being short, I've been very busy. I believe there are only 20 pages left, might go ahead and finish it up tonight if I have the time.

I love the SPECTRE chapter. I wish Fleming had developed that further in later novels, letting us get to know some of them as leading villains, group politics and conniving, and kept Blofeld from this incarnation. It kind of seems like he wrote OHMSS and made him Blofeld just because... It could have been a separate villain.

Everyone moving along TB quite nicely then? Think I'm going to start TSWLM tonight, tried to wait a few days in hopes that most of us would be caught up together.

“Don’t give me that crap about real life. There ain’t no such animal.” That’s all that need be said. Fleming at his most brilliant.

Yes, it's a great way of addressing (and winking at) the reader's suspension of disbelief. It would work beautifully in a movie as well, perhaps even better than on the page. And there's a certain amount of truth to it as well--life is full of events too outrageous for "reality."

The coincidences, several huge and many small ones, that saturate both the novel and the film versions of TB have always bothered me.

    Please explain.

Ashamed to admit this, since I've not come anywhere close to feeling this way throughout the rest of the series, but while I admire another Bond-less opening to a novel (TSWLM, much like FRWL), this one is an exercise in retaining interest and intrigue. I keep hoping for that moment where it all clicks and I get where it's going, but after four chapters, this is pretty dull for the most part.

I've not. Treading on new ground for the rest of the series, this started several books back.

Regrettably haven’t kept up with LALD as much as I wanted to, but I did get to enjoy several chapters today! Man it’s good. As I was reading, thought “The Silver Phantom” (chapter name) could be a cool title for a future film.

Live and Let Die is finished!!! Wow did I love this book - even more than I expected! I actually preferred this a little over Casino Royale even, which is sure to be controversial. But everything was just so good - the adventure, the danger, the characters (especially the villains!) - it was terrific. Big fan. Also one thing I really love about it is the expanded relationship of Bond and Leiter, which we don’t get near as much of in the films. Brilliant novel - I am stoked for Moonraker.

    Novel Ranking:
    1. Live and Let Die
    2. Casino Royale

Yes, Mr. Big in the novel (like Drax in the next one) is so much more intense and interesting than in the film version.

I have to agree. I prefer the treasure smuggling plot in the novel as well. I do like the film version of Mr. Big, but the novel version is the truly scary one. I'm interested to see how Drax is done differently (I've heard the MR novel/film differences are some of the most of any novel/film pair). Le Chiffre I probably preferred a tad in the film version, but pretty close. I love the LALD movie, but I think the novel was superior. With CR, I liked the novel and film about equally. Maybe the film just a little more, but I am biased since it's my favorite Bond film.
