Wha'??? Not even a wee dram o' single malt?

No, I'm afraid not. I come from the country with the world's oldest distillery too, dating back to 1608. :)

    You're Irish? @Dragonpol
I've searched that oldest distillery from 1608, and it's Bushmills from Ireland.

Correct me if I'm wrong 😊

Yes, well Northern Irish. And, yes, that's the one. That's why it's called "whiskey" here and "whisky" everywhere else as we invented it. :)

Not for the Irish Catholic that is McNulty. Been wanting to say this since I watched The Wire. Sadly the local Irish pub shut down a few years ago.

Yes, you could say that the Virgin Maryland meets the Protestant Whiskey. :)

Now I'm glad I only mentioned "single malt" and did not use the term "whisk(e)y". Could only have been wrong. (I thought you were Scots.)

Yes, it's a tricky business. I wouldn't have been offended in the slightest though. My forebears were indeed Scottish and due to something called the Plantation of Ulster back in the 17th century I am what is known as Ulster Scots. The dialect is greatly influenced by Scots words.

Yes, that's Irish but my side don't tend to speak that here. It's a complicated place to understand for the onlooker. :)

I thought it was also Scottish, at least I learned it first on my only trip to Scotland so far, in 2004. I guess it's Gaelic, at any rate.

This is getting too complicated for someone from outside the nationalities comprising the UK, I'm afraid.

Yes, Northern Ireland is the most complex part of the UK from an identity point of view. Even the UK mainland inhabitants don't really get it so what hope has anyone further afield?! And that's to say nothing of the politics here...

Makes a whole lot of sense, once you start understanding parts of it. And I'm not so sure concerning the latter link, with the whale and all.

What it ends up at is that hardly anyone from the outside will really understand any of that at all. I think I'm relatively good at that but still have my problems.

Yes, the first clip is not too bad to decipher but with the one about the whale I only understand the part about the size of it and that's it!

Well, I'm glad it's not just a language problem in the sense of native German speaker vs. native English speaker. We seem to be both pretty f...ed up with those dialects/accents.<. A

PS: And now it's time for me to go to bed.

Yes, I'm sure just like in Germany or any other country there are plenty of regional accents and dialects.

I imagine you do need a lie down after all of that! :)

So from the Restoration of Charles II onwards. That's an impressive lineage, @Venutius! :)

Yes, it's not actually a real news story but rather it comes from a comedy show on RTÉ - the Republic of Ireland state broadcaster. "Culchies" is an Irish slang word for people from the countryside, as opposed to those from the city. Glad you liked it and could understand it for the most part!

    Here's another one:

I know the feeling. I live in the house I was born in and my family have lived here for hundreds of years. The current house is over one hundred years old. It's nice to stay in touch with your roots. It keeps you grounded. :)

Wow, that is impressive! I already moved about 19 times since I was a kid, and my ancestors lived mostly all over the planet. So, sort of the absolute opposite..

The Taste Café at Chesil shut down yesterday. About a week after we visited it. They served the best fish platter I ever ate.
