A new thread to celebrate historic events in the Bond world.

Perfect to start the day. On this day in 1961 it was announced little known Sean Connery would play James Bond for the first EON produced Bond Film Dr No.

    On this day in 1969

    George Lazenby steps down from the role as James Bond following poor advice from his then agent and anti establishment campaigner Ronan O'Rahilly. Who convinced Lazenby EON were exploiting him and that the Bond series was outdated. Although Broccoli and Saltzman were angry Lazenby refused to shave his beard off for the premier of OHMSS, they had offered Lazenby a Multi Million dollar 6 picture deal.

    I've never understood that to be the case. George was about peace, not war, and matched the time: he got out because he didn't see Bond's model of guns and fists lasting in that age. On top of that, he was a free soul and didn't want tied down to acting, as he didn't enjoy it and didn't want it; he also lost his big love because of taking on Bond, and could've been even more bitter and sad because of it afterward. The recent documentary/biopic feature on him shines a light on a lot of these issues he had with Bond and why he got out, but nowhere will you find him saying, "Bond was too small, I needed something bigger."

    11 November 1920, says John Pearson's James Bond: The Authorized Biography of 007.
    11 November 1921 says John Griswold, Bond scholar.
