Interesting to hear these things from multiple people at once, considering I rarely hear them from anyone, well....ever. Controversial, indeed!

How do people feel about Raiders of the Lost Ark, then? One of the best adventure films ever made, for me. Ticks all of the boxes as "pure cinema".

I used to love it and thought it was one of the best movies ever, but as I have grown older I see there is a lot of bad stuff in there. Enjoyable kid movie, but it isn t even the best Jones film.

Which one is? The Last Crusade?

No, I would put that last, but I still like it. I prefer Temple of Doom.

When you say last are you including KOTCS above Last Crusade?

Oh mate, how can you hate E.T??!!! 😮😁

I must admit, Spielberg was my idol growing up. He really sparked my love and interest in movies.

I saw Jurassic Park 4 times at the cinema. I loved it. But I've always loved Dinosaurs 👍

😁 Ah sorry mate. It wasnt popular at the time, or even now, to dislike E.T.! But i just didnt enjoy it. Annoying brat kids, Spielbergs direction (shooting low to express things from the kids point of view!) i found irritating, And E.T. himself, a giant turd with arms and legs, didnt find him endearing at all!!
I did like John Williams score, but he can do no wrong in my book!

Have to go along with some of the views of Spielberg. When i hear there is a new movie of his coming out, i tend to go "meh!", i couldnt be bothered! Still think 'Jaws' is his best work!
Anyone seen 'Duel' with Dennis Weaver? Havent seen it in years, but i do remember it been really good.
'Raiders of the Lost Ark" is marvellous entertainment! Holds up very well! Saw i tg in the cinema originally and saw a reissue in 70mm, which was one of the most enjoyable days in the cinema!
The sequels are very hit and miss! Mostly miss!
The most recent one was awful!
As a footnote, i remember a radio show reviewing 'Schindler's List' at the time of its release and having a relative of a Holocaust survivor on the panel describing it as "E.T. goes to Auschwitz"! Ouch!

A very controversial opinion: I'm not that much a fan of Steven Spielberg…

He's made a lot of films that you'd obviously consider good – but none of his films have really stuck with me.

I am with you on this. Spielberg has a workmanlike, professional knowledge of film making and an incredible eye for action. But his films mostly lack heart and rearly hit home on an emotional level. Schindler´s List and Saving Private Ryan are his best films in my opinion, but I would class neither as true masterpieces.
I'm not sure if you can count me in, but while I really enjoy some of his movies I find Spielberg rather overrated. Too many of his films I find unbereably sentimental.

Spielberg, of the last twenty years at least, has certainly been very inconsistent. I don't get excited about a new film from him - I get more curious than anything else. That said, I think most of his work pre-mid 90s to be superb for the most part. There's only a couple of clunkers in there that I don't love. Schindler's List, as far as I'm concerned, is a masterful film.

Always interesting to hear other's thoughts on it, though. It's fascinating to me that even the most film illiterate can spot a Spielberg film within a few minutes no matter what the subject of the film is. He's a brand unto himself, and maybe the effect has been diluted over time.

My favourite Spielberg film of the last 20 years is Catch Me If You Can. It's breezy and whimsical and was the first film in which I found DiCaprio bearable to watch. And Christopher Walken is absolutely bloody wonderful in it.

That's my favorite later era Spielberg film as well. Even so I haven't had the desire to purchase a Blu-ray copy for my movie library. A lot of his mainstream movies like JAWS I've seen so many times I rarely have the urge to watch lately including RAIDERS.
I did recently discover an excellent Columbo episode he directed.

That Columbo episode is actually my favourite directing credit of Spielberg.

Murder By The Book is such a great Columbo episode. The opening shot alone, showed why Spielberg had such a natural flair for directing that it was quite clear he would go onto great things.

On another note, Jack Cassidy always played such a great villain in all three of the episodes he appeared in.

His TV work was great. DUEL is one of my favorites and as I recall was made for television in the States, but released theatrically in Europe.

Jack Cassidy was a great Columbo villain! I recently bought the complete series DVD set of COLUMBO and have been enjoying revisiting the show. I love it!

Funny thing, one of the least popular episodes, NO TIME TO DIE, I actually really enjoyed in spite of it departing from formula.

Yes, that opening shot is very memorable – and I agree, Jack Cassidy was perfect in all his appearances. I like his character in Murder By The Book the most out of the three.

I would say Munich is my favourite of his, with Jaws coming in second. Many of the others are good without being great. At least for me that is.

I haven't seen Munich actually. Will put it on my "to watch"-list.

I must admit I haven't seen a lot of Spielbergs latter output. But his earlier work is phenomenal

Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, and E.T all masterpieces.

I really like his War of the Worlds too. It’s widely derided, and it has significant problems (especially when Tim Robbins turns up) but some of it is fantastic.

Temple of Doom is great! I saw it in the cinema on first release, I was gripped throughout.

Crystal Skull is a mess but it’s actually weirdly watchable. Every time it’s on TV I get sucked into it, and end up watching the whole thing.

I must try and get a copy of 'Duel'.
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind!" hasnt aged well, imho, recent viewing of it I found it hard going!

My top ten favorite Steven Spielberg films

    1. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
    2. Empire of the Sun

    —big space here—

    3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    4. Saving Private Ryan
    5. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade
    6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    7. Catch Me If You Can
    8. Schindler’s List
    9. Lincoln
    10. Jurassic Park

(Guilty pleasure: Always. It’s absolute pablum, pure maple syrup, but I love Holly Hunter, and I love Audrey Hepburn in her tiny final role as a welcoming face to the afterlife. I don’t really believe in an afterlife, but if her beautiful smile is the first thing to greet me after I die, I’m totally cool with that.)

I also love Jaws, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and The Post. Call ‘em honorable mentions. I still need to see Munich so this may change.

I'm afraid most Spielberg films aren't among my favourites. I admit they are well-made but their risk-free nature doesn't quite suit me.

Munich, in that sense, is much more multi-layered and perhaps that's why I enjoy that one more than his other work. To a lesser extent, that applies also for Jaws.

Spielberg is second in moost directed movies in my collection, actualy he stay in draw with two directers who write his Bridge of Spies. Since earlier this year include four in my opnion controversial Indiana Jones movies and on this moment only have two movie's on my wishlist. Kuifje (Tin Tin) movie and his for moost people second moost controversial movie (is not released on BD in The Netherlands) and that's the Color Purple.

This is what i have (* BD ** VHS and DVD)

    Jurassic Park 1&2 **
    Minoty Report
    Catch Me If You Can
    The Terminal
    War Of The Worlds ''2005''
    Munich
    Artificial Intelligence *
    Jaws *
    Empire Of The Sun *
    Bridge of Spies *
    Amistad * ( + DVD)
    Indiana Jones 1-3 (3)
    Indiana Jones 4 *

The number 3 with 10 movies are Ridley Scott and (actualy 7 movies/5 episodes over 3 Seasons of tv series) Martin Campbell.

Couple of weeks a go i watched Cowboys and Aliens (extented version) produced by Spielberg and like it more then War of The Worlds because you get to see the aliens. Disapointed but not dislike it, that can't be said about Super 8. That was very bad.

That he waited so long with sequel of Tin Tin and possible a 3th movie i don't understand. He and Peter Jackson and Sony should have agreed he direct the next two too because Peter Jackson has no time.

Thanks for not putting that stupid retro tag on it and called it "Indiana Jones and..." with that film. I also still consider Star Wars to be Star Wars and not episode IV and all that.

Nearly 40 years on, I still consider Raiders one of the greatest cinema rides of my life. Went in knowing it would be good and came out just blown away. When FYEO came out a few weeks later, it just couldn't compete as far as fun experiences. It also never loses anything on subsequent viewings throughout the years.

Temple of Doom seems to have risen for a lot of people over the years. My first viewing I thought it may have surpassed Raiders but over the years it has lost points. Great action, but Willie Scott is just too annoying and distracting. Between that character and Stacey Sutton from AVTAK, writers sure didn't have a good handle on female action film characters in the mid '80s.

That's why I like Last Crusade so much more. Willie is just a tag-along character while Henry is family, upping the stakes with his part of the adventure. Plus, Indy and Nazis are the right combination.

I'm not going to try and rank Spielberg's movies here. I have yet to see one I didn't enjoy, though for different reasons there are a few I haven't even watched...in spite of owning them on Blu-ray, but just not feeling like it for differenr reasons (ALWAYS, THE COLOR PURPLE, WAR HORSE).

But let me commend you for having EMPIRE OF THE SUN as your number two. A brilliant, brilliant film, in spite of the fact that the script heavily Americanises the original novel in order to cowtow to the American movie-going public. But if it hadn't caused me to read the novel afterwards, I wouldn't even know.

I love Hammer horror, but I find myself to be more drawn towards their less-liked early 70's period than the lauded 60's one.
Films like The Vampire Lovers, the later Dracula's and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb are all amongst my favourite Hammer films.
