I haven't been able to find out what caused her death. Was she ill? 78 seems fairly young to pass away these days.

"A long illness", which is a french euphemism for cancer.

On a side note, The New York Times' obituary for Auger currently features a large image of Luciana Paluzzi whom the article misidentifies as Auger. I'm guessing the print edition has the same error.

It seems to be corrected now.

Yep. They fixed the online version. The error in the print version, of course, is forever.

RIP Claudine Auger, you will be missed. Domino is one of my top three favorite Bond girls. You were one of the few Bond girls that all future ones would be measured against.

Unofficial Blofeld and cinematic legend Max Von Sydow has died, age 90:

Despite NSNA's many other faults, he brought gravitas to the film as he did with so many other roles.

Wow--yeah, he was quite an actor. Good in NSNA. Also brings to mind his role in Three Days of the Condor among others.

R.I.P. Max Von Sydow great actor I recently watched him in the film The Night Visitor 1971.

I first saw him in The Seventh Seal his output of films is quite incredible from the The Exorcist to Flash Gordon, Conan the Barbarian (one of my favorite films) to The Minority Report a true legend.

Famous of course for playing chess with Death, this quote from his Wikipedia article amused me...

"Sydow was reported to be either an agnostic or an atheist. In 2012, Sydow told Charlie Rose in an interview that Ingmar Bergman had told him he would contact Sydow after death to show him that there was a life after death.

When Rose asked Sydow if he had heard from Bergman, Sydow replied that he had, but chose not to elaborate further on the exact meaning of this statement. In the same interview, Sydow described himself as a doubter in his youth, but stated this doubt was gone. He did not elaborate on what he did not doubt anymore."

Amazing actor. He always left a big impression, even in small roles like in Shutter Island. RIP.

I caught The Night Visitor on the Talking Pictures channel a few weeks ago, it was the first time I had watched the film. There was a lot of clever action in the film certainly near the end, I enjoyed it.

That's fantastic... I wonder if Sydow had arranged to visit anyone himself after his passing.

From one Max to another RIP, Flash Gordon was one of my favourite films as a child, I think I’ll watch that tonight as a tribute.

Farewell to Ming. Mongo (and sci-fi nerds such as myself) will remember you.

His Bond role was kinda small. Never got to see him as the main villain but it was nice to see him part of the Bond universe.

    RIP

He was memorable and distinct in all his roles, and he was a great Blofeld.

Having just watched Never Say Never Again again on Friday for the first time in a long while (watched with a friend who hadn't seen it yet) I am quite shocked and a bit disheartend to find out about Mr. Sydow's passing. To me he was a very interesting Blofeld, everytime he was on screen he made his prescence known he gave his Blofeld a real personality kind of like Charles Grey in a way but Max's Blofeld was different than that. He felt classy, calm and collected, charming yet so sinsister in his role as Blofeld that really I don't think anyone else did quite like him, oh and he had a sweet beard to complete the set.

I haven't really seen Max Von Sydow in anything else other than NSNA and his role in The Force Awakens but from what I saw of him, he definitely grabbed my attention and was a highlight of Never Say Never Again for sure.

Rest In Peace Max Von Sydow, I hate to see you go. You'll be dearly missed

Even beyond his fantastic work starting out with Bergman, or the iconic The Exorcist, or even around here with his underrated take on Blofeld in NSNA, Max gave every performance 110%, no matter how small or insignificant the role seemed. He'll certainly be missed, what a legend.

He was a striking looking chap in his younger days judging by the above photo. He could have been Bond himself never mind a Bond baddie.

Surely one of the most talented actors that ever breathed, Max von Sydow, has more masterpieces on his resumé than a normal man can count.

General audiences will remember him for his short but excellent turn as Father Merrin in The Exorcist, but cinéphiles worldwide will always associate him with his many collaborations with the great Ingmar Bergman.

The Seventh Seal might be the best-known of those, but my pick for favourite Bergman-von Sydow masterpiece would be Through a Glass Darkly.

Today we're not only saying goodbye to a cast member of NSNA, in which he is criminally underused too, but to a cinema icon.

Vila i frid, Mr. von Sydow.

As an aside, I am very pleased that Max von Sydow is considered a "Member of the James Bond Family" by all of you so far, in spite of rather pronounced reservations about NSNA being a "real Bond film" among fans.

As am I. To me an actor in a Bond movie is a part of the family, Official or not.

  • Farewell to a legend Mr Sydow. By far the best thing about NSNA. His role should have been much larger.
