Thank you, @talos7 . I like reading opinions, and so many give thoughtful comments that give me better insights, too. I don't mind people disagreeing at all. I try not to take it personally or as a challenge when people don't feel what I feel about a Bond movie.

For all this films' serious moments and emotional beats, outside of Casino Royale, this is Craig's most relaxed and breeziest performance and film overall.

My only issue with it of late is that I've only had the chance to see it once since it released here in the States. I'm off the next two weekends though so hoping to fit in one more viewing or two before it's gone. The 4K release can't come soon enough.

Please do see it again asap. It is a more enriching experience the 2nd, and for me the 3rd time.

Agreed. This film keeps giving IMO. Knowing where we're going, I can pay attention to so many other things. The acting, for example, is overall a blast.

Ideally, I'd like to have seen it several more times by now, but 1-2 more viewings in theaters is all I can ask for. I'll be very happy if I get another chance to see it. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it last Thursday.

He like so many others also misses the point by not considering that Craig Bond is Bond recontextualized for the 21st century. Like, sure, if you want to see how a Bond would behave in the 1950s, you’re never gonna get that in 2020s, unless they go period piece. Fleming Bond would have never deserted like in SKYFALL. But Craig Bond isn’t Fleming Bond. The context and attitudes of the times are much different.

Lol, I rather doubt that many modern secret agents in the real World are behaving like Craig-Bond

Not to suggest that Fleming Bond is entirely realistic, but I'm sure modern secret agents still believe in what they are doing in much the same way they did in the 1950s, and even get some satisfaction what they are doing, in some way that Craig-Bond seemed incapable of sustaining for a movie length of time.

The US boxoffice is a lost cause.
So it’s a $7.2 million second Friday. That’s a worst drop than SP Friday to Friday.
It won’t even hit the $100 million mark after two weeks.

We're still in a pandemic. I figured this sort of thing was liable to happen in some countries. The cinema I saw it at in the U.S. is already down to 5-6 showings a day, compared to the 11 they had available for release weekend. It happens, and certainly the pandemic isn't helping things.

    It’s not just COVID.
There wasn’t even that hype before release in the US. Bond is underperforming because Americans are just not that interested.

B-movie level garbage like Halloween Kills, ripped apart by critics. rated R and already available for streaming on Peacock, just had the same opening Friday Bond had.
    This is beyond ridiculous.

It shouldn’t because thankfully there’s good old Europe where Bond is doing great. In the UK it will outgross SP.

LTK did far worse than NTTD. That movie debuted at #4.

#4!!! Under films that already premiered in previous weeks.

Yes, that was a grim time for Bond fans, even though LTK itself was very good I thought.

Their loss, then. I'm trying to see it one or two more times at least.

A question for some of you.

In the run-up to NTTD, did ITV (in the UK) broadcast any of the Bond films on Friday or Saturday evening? I seem to recall reading that they did. I’m curious about this form of “soft promotion” because here in the US, I don’t recall any of the cable networks doing the same. Again, unless it really flew under my radar, we had the usual TV ads, but little else.

In the past, it was almost par for the course here in the US, that if a new Bond movie was about to premiere, one of the cable channels would have a bond-a-thon. This was especially true in the months leading up to SF, where the STARZ and REEL networks not only broadcast all of the prior movies, but also created special content promoting SF.

Could this be a factor in the less than great US Box Office?
  • None of the theaters I went to were even half full. Very sparse. Everyone I know (even the ones interested in the movie) have been spending their time watching football and baseball.

    Is there any hard intel on streaming date? (I haven't seen it yet.) A Google search shows;

    November 12
“No Time to Die” will be available to all Disney Plus subscribers starting November 12. Disney originally said the movie will be available to stream after 45 days in theaters, but the official Disney Plus release date is more than 60 days after the film's theatrical debut.

Question.......in the US do cinema goers have to wear masks..........don't have to in the UK. In fact if you are worried about Covid just go to a quieter earlier or very late screen time of the film, plus you can select your seat, so you just pick one so you are a few seats away from the next person.

Here in New York City, you have to show proof of having gotten the COVID-19 vaccine (or a recent negative test) to enter the theater. You are also required to wear a mask when not eating. Some theaters are also adding a seat "buffer" between parties. For example, if I order three tickets for NTTD online, those seats will be together, but the two seats on either side of us will now be unavailable. (At least that appears to be the policy of the Alamo Drafthouse where I saw NTTD last weekend).

The practical effect, however, is that I was able to take off my mask inside the theater - as I was eating - and only had to wear it when I was away from my seat. In general, I felt very safe.

Almost identical to Quebec ... but no mask required when seated.

The other practical effect is to encourage the patron to buy some popcorn in order to negate the mask policy!

Still not going to make up for the lost revenue from the empty seats either side, but better than nothing

And it will have put some punters off going along at all

    Sad
  • With Bond movies, there are certain expectations that come with it. I think NTTD for many people just wasn't a good enough Bond movie and failed to meet their expectations. Had this film not been as disappointing, I think it would have really galvanised more folks to not only priorotize going out to see it but also sneak in repeat viewings. Bond films really shouldn't end on a bum note, least of all killing off the man himself.
If the producers want to subvert elements and add sad and emotional beats for the sake of dramatic moments, they need a long, hard look at why Casino Royale worked so brilliantly. Bond films need to be more than well-made films, they need to be largely enjoyable and a fun film experience. Frankly, for me, I don't care about the ending and I don't think what happens can be compared to Tony Stark as some have tried to do. The build up and execution of Stark's fate was better earned, felt like a significantly more organic and handled far more competently than what we got with Bond. However, I think even with several disappointing elements with the film, overall it's still quite good but it's not a mystery as to why this film is underperformed in the US. (The pandemic isn't really a factor here when you look at how other recent films have performed. Some people just don't care enough to see this film).

Same goes for the Netherlands. Public tv-channel RTL7 changed their name to RTL007 for a month or so and aired a Bondfilm primetime every day.

In Germany, too SKY has a dedicated 007 channel now and there are several films shown on various free-tv channels as well. But Bond was and as we can see still is HUGE in Germany. Will definitely go and see NTTD at least one more time at the cinema and pre-ordered the 4K BD already (even there is just some placeholder release date on Amazon so far).
  • Maybe going forward EON shouldn't release theatrically in US aa they seem apathetic to Bond and go direct to streaming. Europe and rest of world can carry Bond.

It looks like it’s gonna drop a 60%, just like QoS (but the Foster film had a pretty much stronger opening weekend). That is looking even worse. Bye bye $150 million final gross.

I have just returned from another viewing of NTTD. I don't get all the no-fun criticisms. This film is such good fun IMO.

Completely agreed. I thought it was a blast from start to finish, even throughout the slower London sections in the middle.

I had a great time at all my four screenings. I have no issues with the serious ending but I would have liked a few more funny moments in first two hours. There are some funny lines, but only some...
