If they can make $1 billion in 2022, it's a better option, than making $300 million with VOD + theatres in 2020 or 2021.
  • It's one thing for Disney or Warners to take a mere $300 mill return on a film when they were shooting for a billion...they've got plenty of other potential paydays in the pipeline. Eon & MGM only have Bond. It doesn't surprise me at all that they're willing to hold back a little while longer to see how Tenet, Mulan, and some others do with their different release scenarios before 007 finally pulls the trigger.

So God knows why they would put this on their app which I hear is basically just Mickey Mouse and Frozen content. Though it was always going to end up on Disney+ eventually.

I'm not sure who you heard that from but Mickey Mouse content is exactly the reason why I did the two weeks trial for Disney+ and I couldn't be more disappointed (hence why I'm not going to subscribe to the service). Disney+ is amazing for Marvel and Star Wars fans since you'll find pretty much everything related to those two franchises but the Disney side is very lame (especially in my country, where even less content is available).

    Maybe it's your country.
It likely is. I don't know how I can look at the US catalogue (unless I use a VPN, which I'm not sure whether it's legal) but I joined the Disney+ subreddit and I was amazed by the overwhelming amount of content being in other countries and not mine.

No it isn’t. If they go bust before 2022, then that $1 billion goes up in smoke.

Better to make $300 million next year, than make no money at all

This. They haven't spent all this money so they could make it back (and then some) several years later. They'll want a return on their investment much sooner than 2022.
  • If they are still going with November 2020 they'd better start that publicity band wagon rolling and hope it isn't another $30 million down the drain............

They're waiting to see how Tenet does first.

Further delays of some Warner Bros. films are likely to happen.

The movie theater that I work for is opening up a week from Friday! Fingers crossed that Bond can stay. We need to do mandatory retraining, but I’m just happy we’re reopening.

“[...] Last May, the Washington Post quoted a Cassandra warning from an anonymous Hollywood studio insider: “. . . If Tenet doesn’t come out or doesn’t succeed, every other company goes home. It’s no movies until Christmas.” A recent Variety report noted that Tenet must “take in roughly $700 million globally to make a profit”.”

    Fingers crossed...

Eh... I’m extremely skeptical of $700m. I don’t even think it would have done that well pre-COVID.

I would very surprised at anything north of $500million at the moment. Even $400million would be an accomplishment.
  • I think it will do alright, but it will take longer for it to make its money in the current climate.

No movies until Christmas? So then theoretically, even with another delay, NTTD could make it out this year. Still bracing for a 2021 release, of course, but hoping for the best.

There might be another strategy, albeit one that is dependent on CJF:

Release the current version of NTTD on digital in November.

Plead with CJF to edit an extended version for theaters.

Release NTTD (The Director's Cut) in Cinemas Summer 2021, with all of the hoopla.

Make a ton of money on both.

Fukunaga is done with this film (his words) and given the mammoth runtime (for a Bond film) I’m pretty much sure this 163 minutes cut is already his DC.

If TENET only does $400 million, then ALL big budget Films of the next 9 months will be cancelled for sure.

    Wrong way.
No film will EVER make big money, when it's already released otherwise - director's Cut or not ...

Right now the press screenings for TENET in Germany start.
I hope we will get some positive reviews over the next few days.

I hope so too! I want the absolute best for Tenet, both because I'm interested in that film and for the survival of new blockbuster films - NTTD specifically!

On the plus (or bad) side, I think we should know pretty soon if NTTD is delayed again or not, depending on how Tenet does...

Yes. That does seem to be the conventional thinking.

Where I am in Phoenix AZ, most restaurants and bars have remained open all summer, but with STRICT social distancing. You must wear a mask when entering or leaving. All staff have masks.

Our numbers have started declining over the past month.

I think it is possible for theaters to open with social distancing in place. I think it would be relatively safe. (But who cares wth I think. LOL)

That’s what we’re doing at the movie theater I work at. It’s a major case of trial and error.

I care! And I agree. If theaters don’t get some revenue from new movies soon they will be doomed. I like to believe with strict guidelines in place this is achievable. And of course, no one has to go if they don’t want to.

    Exactly.

    It's a serious Catch-22.

The theaters don't want to open unless there are films ready to be screened. And the distributors don't want to commit to releasing films if the theaters aren't open.
