I won’t say that Brosnan M hated Bond. In TND, the two show respect for each other and she lets him do the job(s) his way. With some helpful ideas. And this is when she’s being pressured by her superiors. Good thing Dench hadn’t won the Oscar and P & W had been screenplay writers for Bond yet! In GE, she understandably has to put her foot down. She is his new and first female boss. In DAD she switches sides. In TWINE, her past comes back to haunt her. And she takes a lot of her frustrations out on Bond. Which I blame on the family soap opera writing. For Craig M, she cares, but she wants to put on a tough face. Some of the decisions her character made (both versions), made it hard for me to sympathize with her when she died in SF. As people have stated about Ralph Fiennes’ M being written poorly, it is a sign that P & W and arguably their creative partners, writers and directors can’t really write M well.
Yes, that's what pretty much signalled that Dench was playing a different M in Dan's run. At this distance, I'm not sure now whether or not I understood that going in, just assumed it or worked it out while watching. I can remember saying it to a couple of people and them looking at me as if I was daft, though! :D
She is such a wonderful actor and a brilliant M
Speaking of Judi, everyone should check out Louis Theroux's interview with her.
I just wish they written him more like Bernard Lee's M. At the end of Skyfall he's crusty but he has a respect for Bond, having witnessed him in action in the enquiry.
From Spectre onwards its like they were toying with making him a villain. Fiennes in a recent interview jokingly said they kept bringing Judi back as M, while he was M, which didn't help cement him as the new boss.
Don't even get me started on the way they wrote M in NTTD...
I think the only other scene that springs to mind is when M told Bond she would have preferred to have left him in North Korea. And of course there is definitely professionalism there as well. But I definitely concede I was oversimplifying.
In the scene in Skyfall when Mallory says "you're sentimental about him", that M is going to stand up and say "when he was Brosnan, I hated him!" :))
For that effect, one has to forget that the Brosnan M and the Craig M were two different persons, although they were both played by Judi Dench. Which is one more reason why why the franchise should restart with entirely new actors for recurring roles.
That would seem a callback to TB and DAF. Best to move away from men in drag.
Yeah, I was picturing it as an outtake! :D
I don't know what you're talking about, but I have the sneaking suspicion that I wish I did.
I wouldn't hate it, I thought he was a fantastic M. If they do keep anyone I'd like it to be him.
IF, and that's a big if, they were to go down the alternate timeline route (and i'm not saying that they should), then they might as well go just the whole hog, and do the Bond version of the Guardians Of The Edge from Power of The Doctor.
Bond: "........"
