I'm still holding out that Nomi is a double agent, I just think her character isn't really needed in terms of the plot if she is a just a rookie 007, whereas if she was a double agent working for Safin, then it adds so much more to her character. We'd have her tailing Bond, getting close to him, gaining his trust, then ultimately betraying him. Plus it would make more sense in terms of why, we the audience, should care about her journey and her as a character. Instead of how it may come across as a female agent shoehorned in to be Bond's equal
I would’ve loved for Paloma to have been a proper femme-fatale, and maybe even fight Nomi in the third-act, but from what we’ve seen and the vibe I get from her character, I think she’ll remain good and either die in Cuba or live to die another day, and then we don’t see her again.
Paloma looks quite sparky and fun, but I have a feeling she's a bit of a Pola Ivanova. Not here for a long time but a fun time.
Cool cheers mate @Mallory, I am looking forward to seeing the banter between Bond and Nomi
I'm excited to see Bond and Paloma in action. Ana and Daniel look to have great chemistry in the trailer, they were great together in Knives Out
I think the Cuba sequence is going to be a real highlight of the film, along with that forest scene
@Mallory
Nomi with Valdo on the balcony, shooting at a baddie standing on the opposite balcony (the spectre event/dance hall). Meanwhile Bond and Paloma are busy fighting and shooting in the dance hall lobby. Bond steps out, shooting. Paloma comes out firing at the driver in the car. That car goes straight at wooden structure next to Nomi/Valdo. He jumps over to the structure that collapse. You can see Valdo with the metal case on the structure before he comes falling down with Bond already near him.
Check out my ridiculously layout I made a few months ago :))
She sees Bond as a big problem, someone who’s interfering with her mission. He’s with CIA after all.
SPECTRE's base escape might be one of the most underwhelming, underutilized sequences in any Bond film. Quite the missed opportunity.
Very good idea, @mallory... that would have added to the tension that should have been there.
Plus, no matter how well Swann shot, SPECTRE Agents should have made an imposing threat. Adding to more suspense and tension that just wasnt there (they're closing in on disoriented Bond and Maddy, she now runs out of bullets, now what??...)
Also, M could have sent a team to rescue bond & Swann out of that lair.
Also, it must be said that this new photo of Nomi with the DBS is pretty fantastic. I think this might be my favourite costume choice for NTTD. Perhaps not as cool as Nomi and Bond's military gear in the finale. But this is right alongside them.
Personally, I've never been adverse to a female James Bond (not just 007). I really think it could make no difference. You just have a female character with the same attributes as Bond. I don't even think it would fundamentally change things that much especially in the 2020's where the films are more progressive. In this sense, I echo the words of George Lazenby and think Margot Robbie would make a terrific James Bond....
1. We've known about this months ago, this isn't new information.
2. Spectre ended in a way that made many fans speculate whether Bond was quitting MI6.
3. This is mainly serving as a plot point for the film to explain what happen after Bond retired and before he comes back to the game.
4. Barbara Brocoli who is the producer on the entire franchise and has final say on what's in or out in the films has openly stated recently that Bond will never be played by a woman.
What do we think of that? Apparently it's from this book.
That isn't a headline and a profile that happens without EON/MGM (or whoever is doing that part of the marketing) giving that bit to the interviewer on purpose. The author of that piece and her editors haven't seen NTTD.
So if the picture from the book is accurate as well (and it seems to be licenced by EON, so I trust it), that would mean Nomi is both 003 and 007 at different points of the film. The most likely option being that she is 007 in the beginning and then gets moved over to the 003 spot once Bond comes back. Other variants would turn on the specific ending of the film (death, retirement #2, return to service).
I think she is though because why wouldn't you put that in the script?
They even put the 007 business on the cover. I really don't think that is something you do without getting at least a nod from the production team. It's not like Harper's Bazaar is some kind of investigative publication.
And you are right: This is the ultimate Eon keeping their cake and eating it, too.
There's a black, female 007! Yay, how progressive.
But it's not James Bond! And James Bond is still the lead! So all you conservative fans can calm down.
But Nomi actually kicks some ass and is a proper 00-agent in her own right, who (probably) doesn't end up as an executive assistant! Black Girl Power!
But really, the film is about how Bond has to come back! Old white man still got it!
If they pull it off, it might actually be the squaring of the circle people in the media have been speculating about for decades.
I know what you mean but I don't know to be honest. I guess if they didn't want that story out there they'd threaten to no longer give them interviews.. the whole '007' thing has been very strange. They haven't come out and said it explicitly anywhere, I don't think Lynch has ever mentioned it, and yet you get stuff like this and the foreign language trailer. It's like they haven't wanted to exploit it and keep it secret, and yet they haven't kept it secret at all.
I think it's less for those reasons (although they're good ones too) but more, if you have a story where James Bond has retired and then has to go back to the service, and he meets a new, young double 0, you just would make that person his replacement. That's how you make the story more personal and more about Bond. There's literally no point in her not being 007. Even if Nomi were a white man you'd still do it that way.
And doubly so when you consider the first time we saw this Bond he was a rough-edged agent who achieved the 007 status on screen in front of us, what better was to end his run than to see someone else become 007?
Still no release date for NTTD here in China. Maybe I'll be waiting much longer to see this flick.
In terms of PWB, I wouldn't be surprised if she wrote that line that Bond delivers, "...that's why I've come back to play" or something like that. Not keen on this. Isn't something Bond would say.
I wonder why you blame her for that line.
I'm going to give the character the benefit of the doubt but this is how I feel too
I'm getting Jinx vibes and it's something I wish they didn't repeat it in Daniel's last film, I really wanted to focus and celebrate his Bond more than anything else
I think having him meet a new agent who is in the position he was in in Casino Royale could be a decent way of celebrating his Bond.
