It's amazing that you can do that in the UK. In Germany there is no way to legally check out number plates, as they tend to get scrapped when the owner changes.

The number plates get changed each time? I guess I can see the logic of that, but it's quite surprising, I didn't know that.

All you can do online here is to check which make/model the plate is registered to and whether it has passed its MOT (which is a certificate of roadworthiness) each year: mainly it helps buyers of second hand cars. You can't find out who owns it. It is quite fun to enter in various famous plates into it though!

I was on the motorway recently and someone was driving along in his lovely 308: they’re not the quickest things in the world nowadays (my BM is quicker, which makes me a bit sad! :) ) but I was impressed to find that he was really giving it the beans and pulled away! :)

I've been watching the new version of Magnum, in the opening episode. At one point he has to drive the old Ferrari ( The 308 ) very nostalgic, until during a chase it's destroyed. Although I guess it was a way of killing it off.
