Classifying and Grouping the Bond Movies

edited November 2011 in Bond Movies Posts: 4,762
If you were going with certain themes in the Bond movies and were asked to group them together, what themes would you have and which ones would you put in that group? Here's a quick example of what I mean:

Theme: Cold War
-From Russia with Love
-You Only Live Twice
-For Your Eyes Only
-Octopussy
-The Living Daylights

I'd add Goldeneye to that. Yes its post-cold war, but its heavily influenced by it, and it is Bond v. Russians.

@JWESTBROOK: Yeah, that's a good point. The effects of The Cold War still affect the events of GoldenEye.

I would add TSWLM and AVTAK to the Cold War list.

    OHMSS
    TSWLM
    FYEO
    AVTAK
    TLD
    TWINE

That's not really a theme though is it? Judi Dench is merely an actress in the movies listed.

    Casino Royale
    Quantum of Solace

Wouldn't DAD be included in that line up?

    How about, controversial Bond :

    OHMSS
    LTK
    CR

The films listed being slightly controversial in Bond circles.

    Mixed bag Bond :

    YOLT
    OHMSS
    DAF
    LALD
    TMWTGG
    TSWLM
    MR
    AVTAK
    TLD
    LTK
    TND
    TWINE

Films that have fans for and against, but on the whole offer a mixed bag of entertainment.

Maybe add Diamonds Are Forever to that list, since Blofeld's big laser satellite was the whole point of the diamond smuggling. However, I could see if you left it off, since no one actually went up into space. Then again, no one went into space in DN either.

    Here are some of mine:

    Bond Farewells:
    -Diamonds Are Forever
    -A View to a Kill
    -License to Kill
    -Die Another Day

    "Blockbuster" Bonds
    -Goldfinger
    -Thunderball
    -Moonraker
    -GoldenEye
    -Casino Royale
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that these are the ones that rank among the biggest selling of their day

    Fleming Bonds
    -From Russia with Love
    -On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    -For Your Eyes Only
    -Casino Royale
  • Golden Age
Dr. No - On Her Majesty's Secret Service

    Silver Age
    Diamonds are Forever - Moonraker

    Bronze Age
For Your Eyes Only - Lincense to Kill

    Sew-age
    Goldeneye - Die Another Day

    New Golden Age
    Casino Royale-

I second that. Although I liked the 80s Bond films more than the 70s films.

Chemical elements (either in plot, MacGuffin, or locale):

    GF - AU (gold)
    TB - H20 (water)
    DAF - C (carbon (diamond))
    AVTAK - Si (silicon (microchip))
TWINE - petroleum ((oil) mixture of chemical elements)
    DAD - C (carbon (diamond))

    Classical elements:

    TB - water
    YOLT? - air?
    LALD - fire
    QoS - earth

Films including precious gems (not including wearable jewellery):

    GF - gold
    DAF - diamond
OP - assorted gems and precious metals (Faberge egg)
GE - ruby? (GoldenEye Key lens)
    DAD- diamond

There's probably more to add to these lists, but that's all I can think of for now.

I always think of TSWLM and MR as it's own mini-era.

They are visually and structurally very similar. Lewis Gilbert and Ken Adam give them a trademark style for me.

Nope, my error Beasty, I should've included DAF, amended accordingly

I would add GE and DAD since, like DAF, the villain's plan involved a satellite in space.

@PrinceKamalKhan: Yeah, those are needed under the space category. Wow, that's 6 Bonds dealing with space! That could be a marathon on its own!

Indeed. That's more than a quarter of the Bond series itself. Who says 007 and outer space don't mix?

  • Connery's Bond:

Bond Movies where M stays in the office
    -Dr. No
    -From Russia with Love
    -Thunderball
    -For Your Eyes Only

So it looks like M tends to get out a little!

I guess when we look at the small list of films where M DOESN'T show up in the field, it's kind of funny us fans get so offended by it. It's practically a series staple.

Regardless, the powers that be clearly haven't heard fan complaints, as M is playing a bigger role than ever. Funny how that happened.
