Skyfall based on one of the Bond books??

Off of the homepage from Daniel Craig's interview with GQ UK:

The actor places a lot of importance on the quality of the script - understandably so after the nip-tuck "Quantum of Solace" - remarking that the reason why "Skyfall" will be a success is that "ultimately because it’s based on source material, the book had those hooks. We’ve got those in this script and as long as we hit those, the rest of it is hopefully going to come together."

Am I just reading this wrong, or is Daniel making it sound like Skyfall is based on one of the books??

I do not think it based on any books since all the books has been adapted expect short stories but who knows.....hm...I am certain SF is orginal story and not copy from any of Fleming novels/short stories
  • Do you think it might be an adaptation of one of the Bond books not written by Flemming? Obviously using a different title since no books by Flemming or other authors have had Skyfall as the title.
  • I not sure what books that the producers of Bond is allow to use so it cant be any of the novel written by John Gardner, Raymond Benson, or Jeffery Deaver so maybe Colonel sun? but it seems most of that kind of been used in TWINE

That's a really weird quote...hmm...is he possibly talking about CR but was misquoted?
  • I feel that the quote is really misleading and we have to wait and see
  • One parallel I'm seeing between Colonel Sun and Skyfall is that the character of M plays a more prominent role than usual. Or rather, there's more of a focus on the character, not necessarily more screen time. I don't know, it's a really intriguing quote.
  • I see moonraker and Skyfall based on the amount of time London is being used in terms of location.......And I agree about Colonel Sun maybe the element of the middle east conference will be used

EON do in fact own the filming rights to those novels... i could be wrong, but i at least know for a fact they own the rights to DEVIL MAY CARE and CARTE BLANCHE.. they usually snatch up the rights quickly, so no one else can make a movie based off the material.. so, i'm inclined to believe they do own the rights to all of post Fleming works - but I am not 100% positive of that.

Well perhaps like licence to kill or some of the other later bond novels it has bits of fleming's stories through out the script but not directly based off of one novel in particular maybe?

I believe the quote means the plot of Skyfall is based on the elements or concept of the plots in Fleming's books, and the way the plot unfolds. Elsewhere, Craig stated there are two or three plot hooks in Skyfall. So, in essence, the quote is saying Skyfall will be like Fleming material, but an original story. Anyway, we've known that Skyfall will be an original story since the press conference.

Bits and pieces from the books he might mean. There are a good few scenes even from the Fleming books that are still unused. Hmmm, might we actually get a good film? Stranger things have happened! ;) It's just that the only good Bond film since LTK for me is CR and this is also the only film to be based on a full length Fleming novel.

If their still shooting at some castle might they have something reminiscent of Fleming's wonderful You Only Live Twice? I'm probably dreaming again. :)

I think he's saying the books had a certain type of hook and they're trying to make one in the same blood.
  • I think you are right @tqb that they use elements of Fleming novels and use it to make into their own for the script..

We don't know Skyfalls story, how can you be so sure it wouldn't work? I think you could adapt it in a different way than in the book. Would sure be fun to see in a Bond movie someday, Skyfall or not.

Bingo. You certainly have your thinking cap on. That's precisely what Craig is saying. I think some people need to pay attention to the facts and refer back to what was said at the press conference. Skyfall is an original story but the quality of the story and the plot has more of a Fleming-style approach instead of your usual, typical Bond action fanfare that was a staple during the Brosnan era. QoS had its share of problems too and the producers know this which is why they've been keen to get back on track to where CR was heading and really build from there.

I read it correctly too. And it is exactly what Daniel Craig is saying. Allthough I think it will be indirectly based on a former Fleming novel, just like AVTAK was based on GF and GF was off course the movie rendition of the novel.

Now I am NOT saying that SF will be a mere copy. On the contrary. I think the Bond producers want to retain the feelings they had during production of 'Casino Royale'. And for that reason Babs, Michael, Craig and Logan really digged into all previous Bond novels. To get this Ian Fleming inspiration.

So when I saw the press conference of 'Skyfall', in which the cast was saying 'Skyfall' is not based on previous Ian Fleming work, I always hear this with some scepticism. For this film EON is just very secretive. And they just won't tell everything. And let's be honest. It also works if you are lying a bit during a press conference. It gives you space and freedom to work in all secrecy on 'Skyfall'. Because they don't know what you will know.

Moreover, during the press conference it was never specifically said that other creations/characters of Ian Fleming therefore would not return. 'Q' was never mentioned during the press conference. And then last week Whishaw's agent starts leaking and we know Fleming's 'Q' will return. Stay tuned for some other legendary Fleming characters to return

I have to say, after reading the article it was the first thing that sprang to mind. I'm sure it's a subconscious impulse given the fact, like you, I've always thought it would be an interesting way to kick off a Bond film.

The fact Craig has been looking particularly bedraggled does add a degree of credence to the thought.

  • Now I'm even more intrigued! Can somebody describe to me the introduction of TMWTGG book?? Perhaps as a PM so as not to spoil it for anybody wanting to read it? So I'm definitely leaning more towards thinking that Skyfall isn't based on a sole book, but rather has taken ideas from various books and have made a script that's their own, but still with a strong stem from the Bond books.

This was my initial understanding too. Getting that 'hook' should make for agreat film, something the last didn't have, or it at least wasn't strong enough to carry a film.

Like they did with for instance 'For Your Eyes Only'? The underwater torture scene is from the novel 'Live And Let Die'. And the Milton Krest character and his Wavekrest yaught are originally taken from the short story 'The Hildebrand Rarity', which were then used for the film 'Licence To Kill' :-). Something like that?

There are plenty of Fleming bits that haven't been used yet so he might mean that.

here is another article with more detail thx to Luigi Ferrari from cdm.net

    http://www.timeout.c...usive-interview

Turning his mind to Bond, Craig admits that ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008) was a frustrating experience, not least because the Hollywood writers’ strike meant they ended up filming with an incomplete script. ‘We were ed,’ he says. ‘We had the bare bones of a script and then there was the strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn’t employ a writer to finish it. There was me trying to rewrite scenes – and a writer I am not. We were stuffed.’

In contrast, Craig says he could not be happier with the script of ‘Skyfall’, which he is filming now with Mendes until the end of next May. ‘I’m genuinely really excited because we’ve got a script. I think this one is better than “Casino Royale”. I really do. It’s a totally original story. There’s a long thought process that’s gone into it. I read it and it just works as a story.’

Craig believes that the fact that both he and Mendes are British, roughly the same age and share the same memories of growing up with Bond, has greatly helped the planning and execution of ‘Skyfall’.

Early on, we sat down and we just rabbited for hours about “Live and Let Die” or “From Russia With Love”, and talked about little scenes that we knew from them. That’s how we started talking about it. That’s what we have tried to instil in the script.’

]A full interview with Daniel Craig, in which he talks about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘Skyfall’ and more, will appear in the next issue of Time Out London, dated December 8-15 2011 and on shelves from Tuesday December 6 2011

I think the bold part is the most interesting and we should discuss this in more detail

so skyfall has bits of From Russia With Love and live and Let Die

are we talking novels or films

Film wise perhaps DC's wish of Fiennes as JW pepper might come true lol

Interesting. They've obviously had a chat, as any of us might, about 'Bondian' moments. Rather than simply lifting ideas they'll be trying to weave the essence of those elements into the film. I have a gut instinct that between Mendes and Craig they could create something very exciting. If only because they clearly understand and appreciate the source material and I include both the books and films in that.

While it worked getting a slew of new fans to the table in CR and more prominently in QoS, the Bourne-esque action is something I'd particularly like to see toned back. I want to see moments (not always necessarily action) that could only happen in a Bond film. It's the one thing for me that's fallen by the wayside. Again, more prominently in QoS.

Very interesting. I would love to see some subtle elements of FRWL especially. Thanks for posting this, @commanbond007!
  • I told ya before: Danny Craig is way more involved in the creative process than pervious Bond actors. The way he talks about Bond.....and how he and Mendes can talk for hours about those tiny things in past Bond movies.......makes me think we've got a bunch of nerds working on it. And don't get me wrong: This is what Bond needs! Completely dedicated, ambitious actors, directors, producers writers working as one hell of a great nerdish team on one Bond film. I really trust we get one hell of a Bond film. Miles better than 'Quantum Of Sucksbigass'

I like the remoure i heard about some unyused material from TMWTGG and Yolt going to be yused. But those remours going a lot of times about Mr White/some delete scene.

A lot of things happend since QOS, in the meaning of that some offical BBC Nature programs be on Dutch tv what made or turn some opnions of expetions (Example Wild China change my opnion about the Bond 23 lead location not be Egypt but China.) & made me intrest to read some Bond information book again. This let me think there mabey yuse some unyused material from the DAF novel. What i think there going to be yused get above from a scene i saw at the end of QOS. But i discover later also be in TMWTGG novel. So i remove DAF novel from my list.

Iam a big fan of something to learn for 007 in the movies of Yolt and TMWTGG TMWTGG and Yolt. I thaught Bond 23 going to be kind of Yolt, TMWTGG,
    Seven Years in Tibet
    with
    Mongolia, Tibet
Russia, China, India. Years a go there be a Dutch/Belgium program and one of the locations in that program is where QOS end. My opnion be Bond 23 wil start there insteed of Moskou.. Everthing with in mind of the water story, Bond must find his solace and that TMWTGG (DAF).

In my opnion it also have been intresting if there yuse something from the QOS short story i read in that book for M and her remoured boyfriend (The guy in her beath in CR when Villiers calls her and the grey guy in QOS at the window.. Also there is a scene in QOS in the beath room where she remove make up before she sleaping if not the other way around and put some make up before she go to her work. That last thing i think it be done for 2 reasens.). Some older actor who later not be avaible any more because he mist do theater i always thaught he mabey play Q or that guy (In my fan art he play both.). Because the gray guy at the window be CREW member, the one from CR too and the guy must on screen now.
