Apologies if this already was discussed. R Moore was not happy about the casual death Bond inflicted upon a guard in LALD. Bond was using a hang-glider to approach the island from Quarrel, Jr.'s boat. He made it in without being noticed, and met with Solitaire. To get in without being noticed, while descending in his parasail approach, he kicked the guard from behind, who apparently fell off a cliff to his death. Neither Bond nor the audience even saw the man's face, as I recall. The man did not know Bond was approaching, and did not raise his weapon, such that Bond would have been acting in (direct) self-defense.

Yeah it's a fair point, that is an unnecessary one. I also think of the guard in Dr No when they're in the water: everybody is hidden underwater but for no apparent reason Bond chooses to jump up and knife the guy from behind. It's rather bloodthirsty.

Maybe a future nominee could be cold blooded death? Quite a few have been mentioned here. I never thought about the LALD guard that Bond kicks to his death.

I'm sure I noticed it more because R Moore commented on it. I forget if it was discussed in his James Bond Diary on the making of LALD

Hello, I was trapped on a table while Mr. Goldfinger explained his "laser"!

Okay we are getting the votes tabulated by the fine folks at Willard Whyte Enterprises. When you want to fake a moon landing, or go away with Bambi and Thumper, Willard Whyte can handle it all. The Klebbie goes to....Plenty O'Toole in DAF, accepting the award is Tiffany Case who owes her life to Plenty!

Here are the results of our Klebbie:
    • Mathis and Strawberry Fields in QOS 3 votes
    • Plenty O'Toole in DAF 7 votes
    • Secretary in TSWLM 2 votes
    • Write in votes Aki in YOLT 2 votes, Chuck Lee in AVTAK 1 vote!

Our next award goes back to the good side of the ledger! Lets do a Bondie and look at introduction of a new actor in the role! The producers seem to know to pull out the stops when introducing a new Bond to the screen. I am going to set aside Sean and Roger as both didn't figure in the PTS with their introductions and Sean's is certainly iconic for all the right reasons. So here are the nominees:
    • On Her Majesty's Secret Service, introducing George Lazenby. Has the main Bond girl ever appeared in a PTS? This was certainly not what happened to the other fella! This Bond packs a punch with callbacks to the previous films. The beach fight is a splashy and chaotic affair. Screeching tyres on the sand aside, this PTS starts off the film in a solid way!
    • The Living Daylights, introducing Timothy Dalton. Great action, some danger, a wonderful reveal of Tim in the lead role with wind blown hair and serious stare. Barry's soundtrack is an added bonus!
    • Goldeneye, introducing Pierce Brosnan. The bungee jump, the pairing up with another double-o this was a fresh take on the character. He appears trapped but yet uses ingenuity to escape. The logistics of the building and climbing into a tail diving airplane aside, this is a cracking good way to introduce the audience to Bond!
    • Casino Royale introducing Daniel Craig. Black and White, no gun barrel, but did it need it? Daniel is quiet and still and yet conveys menace when interacting with Dryden. The washroom fight tells us this is a very different Bond. This sets the whole tone of the film and of Daniel's gritty take on the character! His Bond will make you feel it!

So my dear academy members! Who has the best PTS introduction of their Bond? Remember we are just taking the PTS into account, not the film as a whole. Let the sport commence!

I absolutely love all four. Always rough to decide...
Lazenby is introduced in a cool way in the car where we son't see the whole face in the beginning. And I love the fight.
TLD is a perfect PTS and the tension is high as we don't know which one is Bond. When Dalton is introduced, the action sets in and already tense PTS is combined with awesome stuntwork and car action. And I also love the end of the PTS which is why I slightly prefer this one to Lazenby's introduction.
The TLD PTS is only topped in my ranking by GE. The bungee jump is a perfect beginning and I love the tension when Bond is surrounded by the soldiers in the facility with Ourumov explaining tht Bond can't win...and then he succeds of course. I miss this kind of Bond moments.
CR is a completely different PTS but perfecg for what it is and with a cool ending ("considerably"). All in all, I still prefer the more spectacular PTS:
I don't have problem with Bond's toilet introduction in GE. I love all the action and atmosphere around it and vote for GE.

Of course (if the stories are true), the real award here should go to the person that managed to convince Jill St. John to accept the award on behalf of Lana Wood!!!

Close call between them, but I'll go with TLD, as the reveal is more dramatic.

I'll go with TLD too, though Lazenby's introduction comes close.

In GE, I think its Trevelyan who had got the perfect introduction there with him coming from shadows and points his gun to James, I also liked the way how he speaks Russian, the dialogue in that scene was also great.

CR was more serious, but not just a fan of the black and white palette (That whole Dryden scene), looked like a bit of Batman for me.

Lazenby's introduction was close to the novel, but it's my second pick after TLD.

I liked TLD because the fun and danger was perfectly balanced, so I'll go with that, perfect for Dalton's introduction.

Since this calls for the PTS introducing a NEW Bond, let's please recall the following: LALD did not have Bond in the PTS...and TMWTGG did not, either. A mannequin does not count. So, the PTS which first introduced R Moore as Bond is one the best ! In fact, it was Bond, and BEYOND ! The PTS for TSWLM showed R Moore for the first time in a PTS for one of his Bond films, so it was the PTS which introduced him. It is one of the best of all the PTD, regardless of showing the Bond actor for the first time or not. It ends with the fabulous, spectacular ski jump becomes parachute jump !

@Since62 I see your point and almost everyone loves the TSWLM PTS...but Moore isn't introduced in this PTS. It was in his bed in LALD which is why I think the four nominees make perfectly sense.

Yes the PTS for Spy is a perfect piece of action and fun. However it didn't introduce an audience to Bond. Same with Sean being introduced as Bond. He also didn't appear in the PTS till his third film, GF.

But I am keeping this to the 4 Bond's who made their introduction to audiences in their PTS. Hence Moore and Connery not being nominated for their introductions.

    TLD.

The shot of Tim turning to the camera as the yells of 004 are heard in the background is one of my favourite moments of the series. Barry's music is perfect, the location is wonderfully atmospheric, and it leads into a fantastic action sequence.

    An easy choice.

CR is close behind and GE is also brilliant, but TLD is just prime Bond.

Apologies. I mis-recalled and thought the scene in Bond's flat was post-credits. In which case, you nailed it and TSWLM PTS cannot be in the running as a possible answer to this question. Now...if we want to talk about THE BEST PTS overall ??? It's a candidate, but, wow GF...

It is. It's the first scene after the song finishes.

Yes, TLD is my definitive favourite too. Dalton Bond really hits the ground running, as it were, and I think it remains the best introduction of any Bond actor in the role.

    TLD followed closely by OHMSS.
  • It’s a tough one for me. For me, Goldeneye was my first Bond film, and I’ll always have fond memories of being blown away by that pre title sequence. But I also love the build up of Lazenby’s introduction, as well as Dalton’s and Craig’s. If I was forced to give an answer however, I’ll go with Dalton and The Living Daylights, especially when you throw in AHA’s theme to complete the package.

It's TLD, undoubtedly. The way Dalton turns with the blowing of his hair with that saturnine stare of his, Glen's camera panning towards him, accompanied by Barry's music, all prompted by 004's scream. Easily a top Bondian moment. Not saying other introductions aren't top-tier, but this one really stands out.

I recently heard on a podcast that this intro-shot was actually Dalton's last day of filming for TLD

Which song ? The title song ? So I recalled correctly that Moore's Bond was not introduced in LALD until after the PTS ? And if my recollection was correct on TMWTGG, as well, then Moore's first PTD appearance was in TSWLM ? If so, then I toss Moore back in on best new Bond PTS...

The criteria is it has to be a PTS that introduces a new Bond. TSWLM doesn't work as Roger is not a new Bond at that point - it's his third film.
