As for Bond and engaged ladies -- please recall Fleming's Moonraker and Gala Brand.

As for Bond and smoking, drinking, using drugs, etc. -- Bond used drugs in Fleming's novels. Fleming's Bond clearly has an addictive personality / addiction genes. He does not merely drink, he drinks a LOT. He does not merely smoke, he's a smokestack. He uses various drugs regularly. He is so unbridled in his pursuit of women -- Gala Brand excepted -- that, were someone to have done all that in actuality, he'd have contracted numerous STDs over the years, and spread them around, for that matter. But he's pretty a super-man, so it all works out ok. It's tied to real-world elements, but at its heart the Bond story-telling is fantasy. The man men want to be, and the man women want.

Having started re-reading the Fleming novels again, one thing became very apparent to me. The plots and characters were almost secondary to what I enjoy most about them, and it is Fleming's inner thoughts and feelings about everyday life.

How Bond interacts with people, how Bond eats, showers, dresses, travels. To make a Bond novel really authentic, you could write the best plot ever, but it will still be overshadowed by what makes a Bond novel a Bond novel. And that is Fleming's inner thoughts which he channels through Bond, and the lifestyle he leads, which mirrored Fleming's own lifestyle.

This is why it has always been a struggle for other writers to try and create a Bond novel in the style of Fleming, although I think Horowitz has come closest. Because the books were not just the work of spy fiction. They were almost biographical.

I imagine we’ll see Mary Goodnight again. I think a number of characters will return, including ones we didn’t think about.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Goodnight again, not that her relationship with Bond needs a closure, but, considering that the character appeared in Fleming's later novels, it could be a great way to conclude this cycle started by the Blofeld trilogy.

Regarding other returning characters, if Horowitz's intention is to write a conclusion to the YOLT/TMWTGG events, I would love to see Tiger Tanaka again.

Wasn't Horowitz's problem with many continuations and specifically Carte Blanche that he thought it doesn't make sense to port Bond into our timeline? I remember reading that somewhere.

As for the "old enemy", by far the best speculation I have read so far is Colonel Boris who brainwashed him between YOLT and TMWTGG. In the timeline he isn't that old of an enemy but it would make sense to go after him right after he has successfully completed his "redemption mission" of killing Scaramanga.

Good shout. That would make sense, going after Colonel Boris. Maybe he tails him down in Hong Kong, and secretly kills him without disclosing it to M. Then covers up the mission in Hong Kong, when he says to Tanner in CS that nothing much happened, and it was a bungled operation.

I'd love a 60's period piece set in Hong Kong, as it's my favourite city.

    What a brilliant idea !
He needs something truly substantive to make this one stand out.
Although Pussynomore will buy every special edition going and be first in line at the launch event it is fascinating that the only Bond continuation novel that truly reverberates for Pussy remains ‘Colonel Sun’. Amis did a fabulous job.

When do you think we’ll get a title announcement? My guess is around NTTD’s home media release.

I'm guessing it'll be Nurse Yes.

Mary Goodnight is the nurse. Maybe it’s Felix Leiter. Titles could be The Past isn’t Dead or Anthony Horowitz is here for a while. One last guess is More Ways Than One. Due to Anthony Horowitz writing more than just continuation novels, possibly a screenplay or reference book about James Bond.

He means six more chapters. There are 23 chapters in all in the novel.

Wouldn t it be fun if the title was FRIENDS OF 007, and Horowitz had posted some chapters here previously? If that were the case, I would buy it, but I doubt it. Horowitz just doesn t display that skill.

The villain, Roman Iguanna, would have the opening line, "You are among friends here, Mr Bond."

M: "007: Someone is stockpiling the world's chickens and I need you to find out why. We've got intelligence suggesting the Quakers may be behind it."

Miss Moneypenny: "Hey James. Wanna give me a fiver for my 5 km park run? I'm doing it to raise funds for my gastric band operation."

Felix Leiter: "So, James, do you do any grilling? What's your favourite food to grill?"

James Bond: "Chicken. Bring forth said bird that I may scoff my socks off."

    Etc. etc. etc.

The Lisa Cach Dr. Yes book is part of a series, and is the third to date. Each has a different author's name and the names are part of the gag. Different agents of B.L.I.S.S. and, in spirit and style, rather a gender-switch on Derek Flint. Played for laughs. Maybe Netflix or Amazon will work with a producer to get them made !

with music by Yes for the audio book...

and while I am the only hardcore yes fan here I will say there are a few Yes song titles that would make for at the very least good book titles for 007 including, and in chronological order

    Beyond and Before
    The Prophet
    A Venture
    South Side of the Sky
    Close to the Edge
    The Remembering
    The Gates of Delirium
Sound Chaser (honestly all 3 song titles could work for book titles but I limited myself to 2)
    Going for the One
    Parallels
    Future Times Rejoice
On the Silent Sings of Freedom
    Machine Messiah
    Tempus Fugit
    City of Love
    Final Eyes
    Brother of Mine
Teakbois (after all it is everywhere)
    Shock to the System
The Calling (this one is a bit of a stretch i grant you but still)
Endless Dream (and the opening of this 15 minute epic could work as a bond theme)
CrossFire (which is a section of That That Is so cheating slightly here but it is very Bondian)
New State of Mind (this could work for some kind of mind control plot)
    Universal Garden
    Fortune Seller
Man in the Moon (which yes I did 4 from Open Your Eyes so sue me also this song could of been a bond theme in my opinion and one of only 2 yes songs I could picture as a title them tune for bond)
    Lighting Strikes
    The messenger
New Languages (three from the ladder but they all work in my opinion)
Spirit of Survival (this is the second yes song that could of worked as Bond theme and I would of enjoyed far more the Die another day by Madonna)
    Dreamtime
Death of Ego ( a part of In he presence of cheating again here but it works)
New World Symphony (from ultimate yes)
Cut the Ties (from Circa again not getting into the history of the band)
Sad night at the Air Field
Madman at the Screens (both parts of their most recent epic 2011's Fly From Here)
    Into the Storm
    The Game
In a World of Our Own (both from 2014's Heaven & Earth)
Don't Take n for an Answer
Go through This (lost song from 81 not getting into the boring history now)
Telephone Secrets (also lost song from 81 that should of been on Return Trip)
    To the Moment
From the Turn of A Card
The Gift of Love (this one is a stretch but why not)
and from their brand new album The Quest being released October 1st
    The Ice Bridge
    The Western Edge
    A Living Island
    Damaged World
    Mystery Tour

and I am sure if I did a deeper dive I could find more but this is off the top of my head. any one of these could work for Horrowitz Book ... but likely he is saying yes as in he has a title not referencing the Band in whose song title he will use as a title.

Well done ! And you are NOT the only big Yes fan on here !
With No having been used, and Yes up for grabs, that would leave --- Maybe

Any definitive word on whether he will be utilizing any unused Fleming treatments again?

Not heard any word on that as yet but I do hope they include another unused Fleming treatment again as they're the star attractions here. Their USP you could say.

If it can even reach the level of Colonel Sun it'll be doing alright. The Fleming standard is probably unreachable, however. The impossible dream of the Bond Continuation, as it were.

well with personal tastes there are a few Benson and even Gardner and Amis i put on the level of fleming shock horror i know. but my tastes are my tastes.

Heck I love Diamonds are forever the novel and if I could I would tell the next Screenwriter rewrite Diamonds for todays era but use as much of the novel as possible for bond 26.
