    Next up, our number 22:

    CHARLES GRAY
    as Ernst Stavro Blofeld
    in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

    A.BMP

Gray's Blofeld has one big fan, as he collected one first spot. That makes him the first one to go out with a gold medal.

That's not all though, there was also a 4th place, a 6th place and a 7th place. Three more top 15's were noted.

It's not all good news however, DAF's Ernst received thirteen bottom 5's, two of those were last places, four were penultimate spots.

DAF's Ernst Stavro Blofeld obtained 82 points in total.

Oh no! I had him at number four. I never disliked him, but he's really grown on me. He has so many wonderful lines, and setting one scene aside :)) , he honestly doesn't lean into the campness of the movie all that much. He projects authority and competence just fine, and if the unseen Blofeld of FRWL and TB had a sense of wit about him, I have no reason to think he wouldn't be quite a lot like Gray's Blofeld.

I'd hoped he'd at least reach the teens...

Aww, he was my number 13. Gone too soon. He was perfect for the film he was in. Who else could deliver those lines the way he did? He straddled the line between humor and menace quite effectively in my estimation.
  • Number 20 for me, one spot higher than Waltz’s Blofeld. He’s still pretty far from my ideal version of the character, but I do think he’s more entertaining in the role than Waltz was.

Whatever went wrong here wasn't Gray's fault. I love his little speech right before he escorts Bond into the elevator. He onzes bad guy charm. It's just too bad Spectre was never mentioned and the plot is going nowhere fast. Sending this Blofeld off by toying around with that minisub was just unfortunate. The villain isn't weak, but he is given the "stupid" treatment: doppelgangers, the voice box, the oil rig, the sub, ... It's quite insulting, really. But again, not Gray's fault.

Not at all Gray's fault, I agree. I really like him as an actor, too bad this movie doesn't do him any favours.

The last spot for me. Not Gray s fault indeed. He is only there for laughs, which doesn't work for me. It's Blofeld! The guy responsible for Tracy's death. And suddenly he is dressed as a granny? Showing Bond the oil rig like they were some kind of friends?
You can argue that I shouldn't link the movie to OHMSS and look at it as a standalone movie. Fine, I still don't like him because Blofeld should generally be much more threatening.
However, I somehow really like the penthouse scene where Bond is confronted with two Blofelds...and the wrong pussy! All in all, Gray is the right choice for this kind of film. But it's not my cup of tea.

Gray came in at #19 for me. I really, really like him in the role, he seems to be having a lot of fun and he's one of those rare double appearances of the series where I enjoy both characters he delivered to the screen.
  • #26 for me. I like Gray as a more charming Bond villain, and he suits the film, but this is meant to be Blofeld. If he was portraying a non-Blofeld villain, I would be far more generous.

    My feelings exactly.

I gave him sixth place. Think he is great. Actually he plays three different characters in DAF (this must be unique?), so totally four.

Nothing wrong with that, he's great in the role and I would've ranked him even higher if I didn't have so many favorites in this department.

I was thinking more "across the series" appearances, with him playing Dikko, an ally, and then a villain, but you're right, he does take on a lot of different roles in DAF.

No. 23 for me! When he appears in drag, we're almost back in CR'67 spoof territory!
I like Charles Gray better as Henderson, its a pity he went out so early in YOLT!
  • Despite Gray's cigarette holder-chomping and eyebrow-lifting charisma, his Blofeld is often presented in a nonthreatening and at times quite goofy light. He works for the film he’s in and has his own charm, but he’s not one of the all-time greats. (Unless of course you’re the one who gave him the top spot! Every film in the series truly does have something for everyone!)

I wouldn’t mind Dominic Greene to go next, but considering how many QoS fans there are here I guess that won’t happen just yet.

QoS is almost always in my Top 3 but Greene barely made the Top 10 for me. This one was a lot harder to rank because there are so many solid villains throughout this series.

Without giving the specifics away too far in advance, I just realized that only one Blofeld made my Top Ten. How about the rest of you?

Well I had three, which surprised me. I love book Blofeld, and no film version is much like him, so I never thought was I much a fan of any of them.

This. I have QoS at #3 and Greene barely made my top 15. I still think he's very underrated but he has a LOT of competition.

I only have one Blofeld in top ten as well.

I actually had two in my Top 10, but again, with rewatching the films these past couple of weeks and re-analyzing most of the villains, it could've gone much differently.

Two Blofelds in my top ten as well.

Two for me, 3rd and 4th place. The bald ones.

Same as most, only one Blofeld in top 10!
Agree that Dominic Greene was a difficult placement, but I have him quite high! I liked him a lot, but there are a lot more better villains to choose from!

Greene is dead last for me. I’m actually quite shocked he’s still in the game.
I love Amalric and think he could have been an outstanding villain, if given proper material.
Alas, that was not the case and along with Kristatos I find him the most boring, un-memorable villain in the series.
Koskov, Whitaker and Grey’s Blofeld are all weak villains by Bond standard but at least they have personality and a few good lines (especially Grey). Greene has none.

I quite like Greene. There's something neurotic and maniacal about him that I found refreshing in 2008... and still do.

I have shocking news. No Blofeld in my top ten...it would be different if faceless Blofeld would be part of the game. That's the way “my“ movie Blofeld works best.
  • I quite like Greene myself but suspect he'll probably turn up sooner rather than later for reasons similar to Glover's Kristatos: though the character on the page was well portrayed, he's simply up against far too colorful competition. I agree with those who have mentioned the series has a wealth of great villains. If a villain of Greene's quality turns up next that simply speaks to the overall strength of Bond's rogues gallery.
