Pierce Brosnan: "Daniel Craig is One Great Bond"

edited December 2011 in Actors Posts: 1,497
CNN recently interviewed Pierce Brosnan regarding his turn at tv with the series "Bag of Bones". As expected, Bond would eventually come up in the conversation. Here is the bit about Bond:

CNN: Have you been following the "Bond" franchise?
Brosnan: (Daniel Craig) is one great Bond. Certainly does a magnificent job.
CNN: He's a tough one. A tough dude.
Brosnan: He's a tough dude. They have to. Big competition with "Bourne Identity" and one thing or another. He'll be right as rain.

I almost get the sense Brosnan says that with the wishing that he could have gone there with the character. See The Bourne Identity reference. Now when was that released...

Right you are. Would have been interesting to see Pierce get a go at an ultra serious, gritty Bond. After all, Roger got his For Your Eyes only after Moonraker.

That being said, you know I'd rather have the Craig era in tact.(though 2004 could have worked)

    oh, and as promised:

Add to that, Brosnan may feel at last EON are willing to stand up against the other films of today and not play it safe, like Brosnan may feel they did with him. I do, for one feel that way.

Or maybe I've read far too deeply into a two sentence response.

That, my friend, is what fandom is for.

It's unlikely that he's going to say anything negative about his successor. Just not the Bondian way.

Why is Bourne being referenced? Is it a big thing in the media over in America? Is it a stick used to beat Bond? Some of us remember Matt Damon slagging off Bond when promoting one of the films.

To be honest it doesnt register on the radar over this side of the pond. Bourne is nearly forgotten while Bond is big news and quite frankly seems to pop up on ITV4 every five minutes or ITV! some Sunday afternoons.

Is Bourne still hovering in the wings over there?

Bond will always be bigger than bourne over here because its probably the biggest thing to ever come out of the UK. Bourne is probably to the USA what bond is to us brits.

Bourne still seems to be quite a common comparison with this current "tougher" version of Bond. Many comments on this very forum have talked about the comparisons.

Also, I've noticed that the Bourne films aslo tend to crop up rather frequently on the ITV channels.

i think they are making a fourth film but Damon is not going to be involved! Just shows how much he loves Bourne!

ummm...not as much as Bond. It seems like a national religion in Britain. In fact there might be a Bond film on one of the ITV channels this afternoon. I will just check...

    roots around the listings...

yep, Goldeneye is on at midnight on ITV1

  • I wouldn't say Craig was a better Bond than Brosnan, but a significant improvement may be better, it's mainly down to the awful DAD and Brosnan's last hurrah, and Craig coming along and bringing a fresh approach that worked and Casino Royale was to many, an overall success. Craig is a good Bond for the most part, and Brosnan is fair enough giving plaudits and all, but I can't yet place him with Dalton and Connery as the best we've seen. Next year will be Craig's moment of truth in the Bond stakes I feel and I'll be eager to see how his third appearance goes, but still a long time to wait for the next release

Bourne is just a natural comparison as a franchise aiming at the same audience. In Dalton's time it was Rambo and Die Hard. Course Bourne gets mentioned when Bond is the topic and vice versa. It will stop once the Bournes come to an end. Then Mission Impossible will be the contender and the MI's style the comparison.

True, but never the less the Bourne films are on fairly regularly. I've checked the listings and they are on a few times over Christmas. Also, with 22 official Bond films and only 3 Bourne ones it's not suprising that Bourne isn't on as much as Bond ;)

Yes, but will the Bourne movies be on regular syndication nearly 40-50 years from now the way Bond is?
  • If a film has any kind of "spy" element to it and is successful then comparisons with Bond always come up - in fact, the producers often start the comparisons before the premiere as a way of generating interest. We've seen this happen over the past 20 or so years with True Lies, xXx, Bourne, etc. I daresay that every ten years there will be another film or series compared to Bond and described as better/more relevant. But as JBFan626 says how many of them will be well known 50 years later?

The Bourne films are well loved in the UK - because they are so European in the way they've been done. Apart from the last one which had too many 'this is a national security alert...he's driven off the roof, he what?' ham acting in it.

I was listening to a national radio station this morning and they were still lovin' the Bourne films and yes, comparing them to our JB.

I'm not going to go into Bourne again, the comparison is stooooooooooooooopid. There is only one great spy genre film and it's been going 50 years....in your face Jason, in your face.
