Oh wow I didn't realise that- I had no idea they've even shot it.
Indeed, they finished filming long ago. I know the post-production will take ages but figured we would've seen something by now, at least.
Matrix or the Wachowski sisters aren’t as big of pop culture as Tom Cruise or Mission Impossible. Plus the hype machine is low on Matrix 4 it seems.
I don't think anyone was making that comparison. It's still going to be a huge release, I would've thought we would have seen something from it by now. The hype machine is low because there's no hype yet - nothing exists to be hyped over, aside from the idea of a new installment coming. Personally, I'm very excited.
Paramount handles the MI series and did the original Top Gun, so I'm guessing they'd go for it as well. The cinemas I go to play trailers from various studios, not just the ones whose film is playing in that venue.
Any reason why an MI trailer wouldn't play in front of NTTD? Same genre and all.
Maybe because of all the films getting pushed back recently they played it safe and didn't start the hype in case its release was postponed?
Yeah I'm just thinking they might want their first big Cruise movie to pass before they start hyping the next one.
Oh yeah, they may promote it on the release of Top Gun, but I'm saying they might not promote MI before it comes out, to stop confusion or disappointment or a feeling of loads of Cruise movies coming out or whatever.
I'm a bit out of the loop in terms of movie promotion anyway these days, but I feel like that's been happening this year- I had no idea Black Widow was coming out, for example. I don't know if the hype hadn't started as big as usually or I just missed it! :)
i still cant believe we dont know the title for this one maybe they are going back to numbers?
nah maybe a recast but I see as long as it makes money it will continue
They could definitely try and continue, but I don't see it going well beyond maybe one film.
I see Ilsa's sporting an eye patch. I wonder if it's part of a character she'll go undercover as or if she'll sustain an injury.
They could easily just bring it back as a TV series. I’d rather see that, it would be a welcome change and back to basics from the films having become Cruise’s midlife crisis outlet.
The thing is, the brand name is now synonymous with Cruise's work. I don't know if a TV series would survive long either, considering a huge chunk of the modern audience only know the films.
I'd be game for it though, obviously!
A nice touch would be to have the new lead listen to a new recording of the mission briefing, but it’s by Tom Cruise’s voice (whether it’s Ethan Hunt or not is up to the viewer). In fact, with all the money streaming services throw at shows these days, they might as well assemble the cast of big names.
For a streaming series I always thought what they could do is make each mission a multi-part plot. Three episodes max. The first would set up the mission, the second is the wrench being thrown that complicates things for the team, and the third is the finale. This could also allow the casting to rotate, so not everyone has to come back for another mission consecutively. Ryan Gosling leads one mission, but then Rebecca Ferguson leads the next.
Sounds great. Vanessa Kirby has a really nice voice, I've never took much notice before
I first became aware of Vanessa Kirby in The Crown on Netflix and also seen her recently in Hobbs and Shaw, very likable lady.
So I would disagree people only identify with this being a movie series and associated solely with Cruise.
On that......I would confidently stand behind the claim that 99% of people these days identify the film series as the "one where Tom Cruise does an act of death defying stuntwork" and that the television show is an afterthought for most of them. Jim Phelps is the villain from the first film, as far as they're concerned.
Whether that's right or wrong is another story, but it's natural enough considering he's been at it for nearly three decades.

I'd be very surprised if audience members remembered the name of Voight's MI film villain, or any of the others for that matter. They're likely more lasered in on whatever lunacy Cruise was engaged in. There are probably a few people still POd they made Phelps the villain. It was big entertainment news 25 years ago when the first MI was released and turned a lot of people off, especially the original show cast. Didn't bother me really as I enjoyed the ride the film took me on. The worst part was almost every subsequent MI film had something to do with a traitor.
Most interesting period was when Cruise's star power fell during the late 2000s. M:I-3 under-performed (and remains the lowest grossing of the series). LIONS FOR LAMBS, VALKYRIE, and KNIGHT AND DAY had lukewarm reactions and relatively low box office turnouts. I remember thinking that was it for him and that he needed to change gears in his career. And then GHOST PROTOCOL was around the corner and Jeremy Renner joined the cast, which at the time felt like they were setting him up to take over from Cruise because he seemed to be on the rise. In retrospect, if Cruise had to leave at some point in the series, GHOST PROTOCOL would have been a very good exit for him. But given that film became the highest grossing film of his career at the time, it's no surprise he decided to hold onto the franchise a little longer. Probably wise, because none of his non-MI films have really set the world on fire.
Well, I really liked Brandt in GP and RN. For me he was a great agent in Ethan team.
