The stuff about Ethan not wanting to sacrifice people etc. feels a bit recycled from quite a few of the recent ones though, I could live without that.
I loved it !
Fallout at least had a heist, Dead Reckoning didn't have much of that. The train bit was as close as we got but the plan fell apart so quickly we didn't get to see much of it. I need a plan to go into action in an MI.
Vatican from MI3 and Burj Kalifa from GP was peak in terms of mid MI movie sequences
Also, It would seem far too derivative of other franchises, including Bond.
I thought Vatican was missing that bit of cleverness and invention, I'd definitely go Burj but then also Kremlin too, or maybe the water thing in Rogue.
Yep, it screams PR strategy to me too. Get them to go and watch by making them think he'll die.
There won't be another film for a while, and I doubt hugely that McQ will be involved (or at least not direct), but I don't think this is certainly the last. Depends if this one flops as well though I guess.
"Mission Impossible 9: Agent Reserection"
PS did I hear in the dialogue that the human species is at stake?
PPS Ironically, after re-viewing, these trailers now almost look like AI produced, with thumping sound track, voice over stating how crucial everything is, key stunt sequence and, of course, Hunt running all over the place. Don't get me wrong, I love this stuff, but, for the first time, I'm feeling it's a little formularic. Imagine a "Skyfall" installment of MI with more investment on character and less running around.
"Do you see what comes of all this running around, Mr. Hunt? All this jumping and fighting, it's exhausting!"

Ethan also holds the knife from the desk from the first movie.
Indeed. I felt that one was more obvious though. For the Rabbit's Foot shot it doesn't simply look like an unused shot from the third film. He almost looks de-aged. But then again, it's Cruise: he's a walking, breathing example of youthfulness. So I can't be sure on that.

I wonder if that comes into play in this film. We didn't get much about it from the MI3 by the end. We just know that the IMF had taken custody of it. Remember Benjis speech about the potential of it.
Maybe, I dunno though; I just think McQ is more likely to give an uplifting ending than a downbeat one.
I don't disagree, certainly all the attempts to add weight through the 'you won't risk your friends' stuff feels very played out. I thought a lot of that stuff in Dead Reckoning felt like dramatic filler to pad out the scenes between action scenes than in any of the previous films.
Yes indeed. I do remember that they had that guy from MI:1 one in this too though, the guy we see in that flashback shot holding the knife (maybe he's kept hold of it all this time and Ethan goes to see him for something or other). I guess he's been in Alaska all this time.
I suppose they're doing some sort of lap of honour of the old films.
Of course, if they had kept Ilsa onboard, they could have developed her characteer further and then killed her off in a more satisfying way. It would of been her final reckoning whilst the audience had assumed the finality applied to Hunt. I like the idea of Ilsa referring to "option 3" (Rogue Nation) and Hunt indicating that, after this mission, he was ready. Sorry, topic drift.
If it were anything to do with me, I'd have that scene structured in such a way that he's held on to it for so long as a reminder of why his career went down the crapper and why he's been stuck in Alaska for so long. Ethan takes it as a promise to use it to save the world to make it up to him. Something along those lines.
I reckon you're probably bob-on with that.
