Hopefully they tightened up the script as I felt DR was a bit convoluted and disjointed.

Yep, as much as I like DR, it does feel like it is writing itself as it goes...joys of filming without a well fleshed out script. There are several points in the film where the characters just stop and do an info dump to set the next 20 mins up.

It does. McQ's way of making these is to shoot the action scenes then write some cheaper scenes on interior sets where the characters explain what's going on to join the dots, and previously that has felt seamless (Rogue Nation for example I know was made like that, but it still feels like a perfectly planned out story to me), but to me this time it felt really obvious. Especially the attempts to amp up the drama with all the 'you won't sacrifice anyone, Ethan' stuff, which was ground already covered in Fallout, and now it's even in the trailer for this one; which to me kind of feels a bit empty and almost cynical and like they've run out of ideas.

McQ was very high profile a few years ago and did some very interesting podcasts and interviews re the way he constructed a script. It raised many eyebrows within script writing circles. But, after the relative failure of DR, he has gone very quiet. I really hope he has learned some lessons and has taken time to work on a really great script with a tight story rather than "wing it" with fingers crossed.
@mtm I agree with your post. But, it's not really possible to make a proper judgement on a teaser. It's perfecty possible that the next movie has the best story of the whole series. But (as we saw with NTTD) it makes the job even harder when you have open story lines that need to be wrapped up and even harder if you decide to include references to previous movies (I have a horrible vision of Hunt being confronted by posters on the wall of all his previous villains), plus, when the stakes are "every soul on the planet" , it looks a little desperate to me. You don't have to have a hero who saves the species to make a compelling story (as we saw in SF) I will say it again, Hunt dealing with the loss of Ilsa and a personal revenge motivation, though not original, is a better footing for a tight story than what I fear is coming. DR could have been the OHMSS of the series but, this time, with a proper revenge that did justice to the lost character. Some story themes never grow old

Yeah I'm certainly hoping so, no judgements yet.

Regarding the past references, McQ has also often said that he will and has ditched any fan service straight away if it gets just slightly in the way of the story (I think Briggs, the TV character, was going to appear in an earlier film but the story went in a different direction), so I do have faith there that the references won't be awkward.

"I want him manning a radar tower in Alaska by the end of the day; just mail him his clothes." "Of all the radar towers in all of the World, he walks into mine." When you start fitting in these remarkable co-incidences, it's not a good sign IMHO
