    I'm thankfully never thinking of that film, but that barrel roll is indeed impressive.

    Okay, Rebecca is not in this last film, so her character really died. So, they kept in the part about Hunt's old girlfriend being killed anyway. Two birds with the same repetitive stone, because of availability (or lack thereof) and not wanting to do a MAJOR story revision... that's some sloppy writing right there. Although entertaining & exciting, I'm afraid Fallout was their high point.

    And sadly at this point, Hayley is really the main reason I will see this next movie in the theatre. And then I might wait for the blu ray if reviews are mixed. At least it can't be as bad as the last Bond film. ... can it?

    Yes, I have some sympathy for the way their hand may have been forced into writing out Ilsa's character; the way they chose to do it, however, was absolutely naff. Especially when combined with the double whammy of introducing an old dead girlfriend through flashback and giving us Atwell. These things individually are fine ideas (tried and tested, even) but it was too much for one film.

    Dead Reckoning severely lacked focus for me.

    Still love Paris though. Glad we're getting more of her.

    I don't know how else you write out Ilsa (you can't really have her just wandering off..?), but I agree it was disappointing. The old girlfriend angle did make that redundant, especially when we seemed to be going back to Ethan's earlier life (especially with Kitteridge returning), and we know at that point he'd already lost Sarah in the first film, who he also had an attachment to. So it feels like tripling up if anything.

    Mind you, I say you can't her wandering off: bizarrely that's what they did with Luther. Just says he's got to go and figure some stuff out and that's it, Luther Will Not Be Appearing In the Final Act.

    Somehow, Jim Phelps returned. Maybe if JJ Abrams still had a hand making these movies. I think we'll see some surprise characters return along the way. I don't think this is the end for Tom Cruise and these movies. After hearing his comments about liking Harrison Ford playing Indy in his 80's makes me realize that the adventures of Ethan Hunt are not over.

    my main fear with the next movie is the same fear I had with NTTD, coming up with a great script/story is hard enough but when you have so many loose ends that have to be dealt with together with, what looks like, some form of "finality" re the climax, it's very, very hard. Combine this with McQs reputation with "winging it" re the story, it could be a complete mess. Fingers crossed, I hope I'm wrong
    PS re Ilsa, limited availabity of the actress IMHO does not equat to minimal, drama/stakes etc. I think there is more drama in Sarahs death here and the audience have only just got to know her. A similar pre-title sequence for DR would have been great with a minor-mission (with banter/flirting/confidence) turning bad very quickly and Ilsa being killed would have been a great shock with real dramatic impact (and the sequence is seperate from the rest of the movie so easier re availability of RF)....

    thinking further, leaving Ilsa seriously injured with the team trying to save her life would be a "knife edge" PTS ending with the audience thinking "surely not" during the opening credits and then the movie opens with Ethan at her funeral. This would leave the rest of the movie open to a new female character to develop rather than have Ilsa and Grace work in parallel which, most agree, simply didn't work. Within the scene above, it failed as a third party (Jim) interferred with the mission remotely. The "entity" would be perfect for this role and actually show the audience (and the team) much earlier on in the film the practical damage it can do rather than the dreadful exposition trying to explain how dangerous it is.
