As long as Crusie can look as good as he does for a man his age he can make all the MI movies he wants.

I loved that trailer and the best part about it is that Crusie is really hanging on to a plane

Cruise has certainly upped the action quotient in the recent MI movies, and also the elegance quotient as well, taking it closer to Bond.

I have noticed a lot of subtle references to Bond films of the past in the MI series.

In this installment, as has been mentioned, the plane thing reminds me of John Glen's Bond films in particular, and the tuxedo fight reminds me of CR's stairwell encounter. The jump of faith reminds me of GE's opening jump, and the BMW spin reminds me of QoS, as @Gustav has already pointed out.

This movie is going to do massive box office in China - I'm quite certain of it, and that's where it may best SP. Overall I see SP winning the box office war, but it will be close this time I'm sure. Can't wait for Saturday, and the debates that will inevitably start when we see the first clips from SP.

I think EoN and Mendes are very well aware of China's profitability as a market and China's partiality to action, in which it was well documented SF was underwhelmingly received over there. Judging by what SP has in store and from what we've seen, I think SP are going to kill it over in China...time will tell if MI or SP will make more but SP will definitely do so much better than what SF did.

Having seen the 'full' trailer this looks good. Very good. Now I'm well known for enjoying my impressive stunts in films. The cargo net fight in TLD being the pinnacle for me. Yet, I'm seeing the plane stunt here in Mi:5 and wondering a). Did they get the idea from TLD and Bond in general. And b). Could TLD be knocked off the top spot?
Even with a harness, Tom Cruise is a nutter!

They have to kill it there! No matter how much I'm looking forward to "Rogue Nation", I will be rooting for James Bond 007! I love Tom Cruise doing very well in it, but I want "SPECTRE" to do better. I want next Friday's trailer to stun us more than "Mission: Impossible". Let the battle of the spies begen HERE!! >:) X(

I agree that SP is likely going to do much better in China than SF (it can't do much worse) but I'm not sure if the Chinese public is necessarily all that taken with DC for one (compared to Cruise who is an old hand at giving that market action fun), and secondly I'm not sure if they necessarily in general get as much out of the characterizations and depth that someone like Mendes brings (which will be a key positive differentiator between SP & MI5 in favour of the former).

It could be a language thing, but I think straight action flicks like MI or even the Brozz Bonds are more their cup of tea.

I hope you're right of course because I'd like SP to kick some rear in China.

The main trailer seems to echo the Craig Bond films quite a bit IMO.

    Nice article, thanks @aaron819!

He´s quite an adrenalin junkie, that Tom...

Just watched the trail, if the film lives up to the trailer, then that puts Mission: Impossible out in front... way out in front of Bond.

Christopher McQuarrie is a capable director, but he is no Sam Mendes. Spectre will easily own M:I 5.

I beg to differ. For starters, the MI films tend to be free of the pretentiousness that has invaded the series with Skyfall.
This. And then some. It´s ok if Mendes has fans, but he´s no genius either.

But who cares which film will fare better? Both look like they´re shaping up well, and we the audience have a good chance of getting two treats this year instead of one.

    This looks TOO good.

However, I don't see the franchise continuing (or even if it does, succeeding) if Renner takes over for Cruise. He doesn't have the same leading power.
What makes you think Renner will take over? I thought that idea was put to rest after Ghost Protokoll?

I think the franchise could continue after Cruise gets to old, but something tells me that if it does, Cruise will have a big say in the direction the series will go and on who will become the new main agent.

It would be great if it could continue with Cruise. He could grow into a Jim Phelps role.

Watched the full trailer, the tone of film more evident. Looks good, Tom is one crazy Mofo, recall watching the extras on ghost protocol when he was diving and running around the tallest building in the world. Despite what anyone has ever thought of Tom, one thing he is is fearless and dedicated.

I like the fact going on the trailer? That this once again looks like another TEAM effort in terms of the mission!

As long as they don't give it to Renner (or even Pine or Reynolds) I'll be quite happy. '

It will be difficult to replace Tom Cruise - we have had him around for so long we sort of take him for granted, but he surely is a one of a kind superstar.

    Don't worry @bondjames, we'll get a reboot with Chris Pratt ;)

Tom bizarrely looked younger in the trailers than he was in most recent film, most likely due to training. Would not surprise me if he made a few more Mission movies, right now he is the number one action star. Never a fan of his earlier films though since MI:1 He has consistently made great action films, even Night and Day was pretty good.

You may not be so far off @DaltonCraig007.

    Or Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Hollywood is pretty predictable. The minute these guys have one flop, Hollywood moves on.

But off course. Tom Cruise, while portraying Ethan Hunt, is also at the same time the "Cubby Broccoli" of the M:I-franchise. That will stay. I reckon Cruise will do one final movie after RN. But then the question is IF Tom Cruise wants another actor to portray Ethan Hunt (which is the Bond-esque way to do) OR if he simply wants a new team, in which Jeremy Renner slowly becomes the leading IMF-spy.

In any case, "Mission: Impossible" is now indeed the biggest spy franchise after James Bond. I actually wonder if Barbara Broccoli and Tom Cruise have met in the recent past to exchange their experiences.

I think @Getafix would agree that once Cruise is too old, they can replace him with Timothy Dalton who will show everyone how it's done. ;)

LOL. Or perhaps George Lazenby's 2nd life as an older IMF-agent.

Then the scenes in the tube. Well, where did we see that before.

To be fair, that's the Vienna U-Bahn.

Another Underground scene ;-). Like in "Skyfall". And, a package being delivered to Benji. Like the package Silva got from his henchmen.

Really grasping at straws for similarities here, aren't we? What's next? "Hunt wears a suit in this scene that looks just like one Bond wore during that one scene."

It is not like the makers of Die Hard did not do a better and more spectacular underground scene in Die Hard 3 and that one actually made sense in the story, so the makers of SF did not pay attention. ;)

For me the only similarity the MI franchise has that they picked up the flag when it comes to sensational stunts and great locations and actually using them to great effect. They seem to do that a lot better in the last two movies (and now 3 movies).
  • just bought the first 4 films for under a tenner (including postage) this is why i love amazon and also provides some explanation as to why i'm constantly skint.

The studio must have loved what they've seen of 'Rogue Nation,' because it appears that 'Mission: Impossible 6' is already in early development.

If it as good as MI4 I am really looking forward to the next two installments. Ans lets face it with Bourne and Jason Hunt the EON franchise has finally some quality competition which can only be good for any franchise concerned.

@SaintMark, 'Rogue Nation' is shaping up to deliver some pure insanity and some really fine looking action sequences, which is all I really could ask for. If this film and the sixth can deliver that, then I'll be more than happy to buy a ticket.

However, I wouldn't say that the Bourne franchise is true competition for James Bond anymore. 'The Bourne Legacy' was a stinker and there hasn't been much concrete word on a sequel as of late.

I liked the Bourne legacy and found the direction daring and am a fan of Renner and of course Mrs Current Bond. And with the possibilty of Damon, Green & Renner involved in the next Bourne movie I am a happy person.
