I agree with the thesis. He is another example of how DAF took Bond in a grating direction of forced humor. While his character made sense in Louisiana and not at all in Bangkok, he was equally annoying in both venues.

Pepper in DAF??? What a genius idea!

I wholeheartedly dis-agree with Thesis #32. I used to dislike him, but now, c'mon, what's there not to like?

I like him, in his first film. Not keen on him showing up again though.

In a perfect world Pepper would have a role in all 23 outings. Pepper is the best character in the franchise other than Bond himself !!

    Love your enthusiasm, DC007! :)

Anyway, I disagree with the main thesis. J.W. Pepper is a wonderful character and one that even casual fans of the series remember with fondness.

I'm talking about the direction the series took, starting with DAF and continued throughout most of Moore's tenure.

  • You leave Pepper be

One of the reasons I get a chance to see Golden Gun is for the Clifton James character turning up -, 'Boy, you is ugly', 'Get your cotton picking snout outta ma pants d'ya hear', 'Little Brown Pointy Heads', 'Get that piece junk outta the road', 'D'ya ever think about gettin' a drivers license boy', 'whassa matter with you, you pointy heads never seen airplane before' etc

I prefer him in the second when he's on vacation with his wife in Thailand rather than the redneck sheriff back in Louisiana. I found him amusing actually, and wish in hindsight he maybe could of appeared in subsequent pictures, can you imagine him in TSWLM when Moore is snooping around the Pyramids.- 'That there boy is where they found Tutankhamun's tomb boy', or Moonraker even - 'Don't go in that there shuttle boy, it ain't no toy'. Yes I would of liked to have seen him more than his two appearances, genuine moments of humor whenever he was on screen, I can't find a bad word to say about him

In LALD, he was fine and sometimes even funny. But in TMWTGG...my god I want to go into my TV and punch him in the face...I like TMWTGG more than most people, but he is by far one of the worst aspects of that film in my opinion

Sheriff Pepper isn't as bad as people say he is, but that doesn't mean he's a good character. I agree with the thesis.

How about that as something for the 50th - have a character from all the other films pop up somewhere in the background - like Hitchcock.

Although in JWs case I would like him to have the odd line as well.

'Did you ever think of getting a drivers licence boy?' - genius. I'm always shouting that when I'm stuck behind some arsehole doing 20mph.

I would disagree with the thesis if his only appearance was in LALD, where he was actually a great fit as a comic relief during the bayou boat chase. He was forced on us in TMWTGG and was nothing more than an annoyance.

Sheriff Pepper was great in both LALD and TMWTGG but I can't imagine him in another outing... certainly not in FRWL, OHMSS, CR... perhaps in OP!

Pepper would be great in DAD or TWINE

If only Pepper walked into Electra's castle instead of Zukovsky.

(It helps to read this with Pepper's voice).

(Pepper walks in) "I'm Sgt J. W. Pepper and I am here to investigate a missing submarine. Lookie here girlie. I am a deputized law enforcing person from the United States of America. Why you're that British secret agent from Ireland who can't pronounce the letter R. Even us Cajuns can pronounce an R. Now sit tight boy, let me shoot you out of that chair. (Suddenly points gun at Elektra). Uh uh uh Missie, hands and skirt up boy, I mean girl. (Pepper shoots Elektra then kisses her).

    "I've never done that before".

I think it would be a mistake to include Hitchcock. You'd have to use CGI to start with, and we know where that leads...

But seriously, is the inclusion of the character James Bond not a sufficient link to the past for the 50th anniversary? DAD tried that whole idea of 'referencing' every previous film and it fell a bit flat.

I found JW Pepper acceptable in Live and Let Die, but he was annoying as hell in Golden Gun and had no business being in that film.
  • Suppose for arguments sake it was JW Pepper in that chair instead of Craig during the genitals violation scene, I would maybe have given my right arm to have seen that

'Boy, I gotta Lil' itch down there boy, would you mind Boy'

'now the whole of the Louisiana State Police Department are gonna know that you died scratching mah balls boy' etc

I suppose we can maybe put him in any Bond scenario from any point in time and make references but there's one example, the possibilities are endless even if we can't really do it

Yes, yes and yes. The Falco character added absolutely nothing to DAD.

Did we really have to see Jinx's handler? No.

    Agree.

I agree too with this thesis. To be honest i always think CIA when the American's are involved with Bond. Don't know why they used the NSA instead? But as already mentioned why did we need to see her handler?

Although i loved him in Reservoir Dogs! He did not need to be in this movie?

I kinda like Michael Madsen, if you hire him give him something to do. In my humble opinion he was not properly used. He'd been more convincing as Elvis in QoS, because with Madsen you know he can play baddie.

Lots of elements could have easily been omitted from DAD but I liked Falco. I enjoyed the scene where he lectures M via Skype about the actions of the renegade 007 and the scene where he lights his cigarette after Icarus shuts off. For the Brosnan era, I find him an improvement over Jack Wade.
  • Yes. I hate Michael Madsen.

    Who?

I know, right? I thought, "He's in that movie?"

  • Ok in Reservoir Dogs

Not appropriate in a James Bond movie

Yes he was not really required

How about an even more pertinent thesis - 'Halle Berrys Jinx Johnson could have easily been omitted from DAD'?

I honestly have no opinion here. I think he was the least of Die Another Day's problems.

    All I remember is:
"Well, well. James Baaahnd. Just in time for the fireworks."
  • What I didn't like about the Falco character is when we get near the end and Bond goes off to the Korean airfield, and Madsen says- 'You Think I'd leave this in the hands of the British?, (looks at Berry), 'You go with him'

If he had said - 'Berry, you are an embarrassment to this movie, leave now and never show your face again until the end credits roll', I might just have held him in higher regard
